Motorola Droid Bionic Won’t Get Ice Cream Sandwich Until Q3

Published

on

Motorola has updated its Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade page and it’s bad news for Motorola Droid Bionic owners.

The manufacturer has updated the timeline for its devices and while this is more confirmation that the Droid Bionic will be getting Android 4.0, it’s going to be a long wait for owners.

Motorola says that the device will be getting the upgrade at some point during the months of Q3 of 2012 which leaves Droid Bionic owners facing a large release window encompassing three months.

Droid Bionic Won't Get Ice Cream Sandwich Until Q3At the earliest, Droid Bionic owners will see the update roll out in July. However, Q3 also includes both August and September so it’s possible that owners could be waiting until September 30th to see Ice Cream Sandwich.

Obviously, this won’t be music to the ears of Droid Bionic owners who were hoping for a swift update to Google’s latest operating system.

The news comes shortly after we told Droid Bionic owners to expect a long wait for the upgrade due to the fact that an Ice Cream Sandwich build has not yet been leaked out to the public.

Leaked updates generally mean that the update is, at the very least, in internal testing, and unfortunately a piece of software has not yet leaked out for Verizon’s first dual-core 4G LTE phone.

Droid Bionic owners aren’t alone either. The Motorola Droid 4 also won’t see the Android 4.0 update until Q3 while newer devices like the Motorola Droid RAZR and Droid RAZR MAXX will both get the update sometime in the next month and a half.

So, now that you know it won’t be coming until Q3, how do you feel Droid Bionic owners?

I believe this Bionic user has had it with google and Motorola. Apple looks better the longer I own this thing. At least Apple is a professional company that has its ducks in a row before jumping in with both feet.

Not 100% true. I had the iPhone 4 when it came to Verizon. We were stuck on 4.2.x iOS builds while the GSM version was on iOS 4.3

It wasn’t until iOS 5 came out that the CDMA and GSM versions were running the same OS. The CDMA iPhone 4 never saw a 4.3 build. It was very frustrating because once 4.3 came out; alot of the new apps/games required 4.3+ and wouldn’t even download on 4.2.x

I would caution against an iPhone on two points (depends how important these are to you). 1-the navigation on the iPhone is not true turn by turn (I use navigation a lot so until Apple fixes that I am not on-board). 2-From everyone I know, the iPhone is not durable. Everyone I know has cracked the screen, the most recent of which was done simply by bending over with it in his front pocket and the screen cracked.

I should clarify that I am a huge Apple fan and have always leaned Mac over PC but the iPhone has pissed me off that they haven’t fixed these basic issues. Apple releases their computers when they are right, not when their market demands, but the iPhone they have done backwards since the start (case and point, how long did it take to get copy and paste?)

The Motorola schedule says “early Q3” for the Bionic. Early in Q3 could mean the first week of July.

Everyone is getting bent out of shape with the Q3 thing, but it could mean we literally see it a week after the RAZR does. It could be that if everything goes as planned, the RAZR sees it in the last week of June and the Bionic a week after. Major upgrades like this are usually staggered.

Ron, you hit the nail on the head. I dumped my bionic and Verizon for an iPhone with another carrier. I paid a good amount of money for my bionic less than 8 months ago. Motorola wouldn’t even respond to my inquiry about 4.0. Needless to say, I’m happy with my iPhone and I know Apple isn’t gonna screw me on updates. I’m a new convert to Apple and I must say, the experience is great. I actually get support if And when I need it.

Seems to me motorola is the one getting their ducks in a row before they give us ICS.
I would rather have it right . And I have owned my bionic since the week it came out.

Chad you are definitely correct, that’s one hell of a downgrade,I have the bionic and I love it. My sister has the iPhone 4 and I don’t like it, people just paying for the name apple is all……

I don’t understand why you version and motorola are messing with us. My good friend has the Nexis 1 and ICS is awesome. I wish they would speed this process up

The RAZR and BIONIC were released very close together, and the Gingerbread build is very similar on both. Since the RAZR is a newer more upfront phone, it may be that Moto is creating that build first, and then the build for the BIONIC should be fairly smooth after that. That’s what I am hoping at least.

I picked up the BIONIC early in the realease, and waited out the problems, since that first OS Update, it has been a great phone; except for the camera, which looks like crap.

I have owned the Bionc since the first week it came out and I think it is a great device. I really don’t understand why anybody feels that they are getting screwed for having to run the operating system that came on the device. I’m looking forward to ice cream sandwich just as much as anyone else but I don’t feel hampered for running gingerbread. And, unless my device explodes in my pocket there is nothing that would make me switch to an iphone.

I don’t know what it is. I’ve had the Bionic since September and I’m on my fourth going on my fifth. I keep having problems with it restarting and turning off by itself. Verizon just keeps sending me the same phone. I don’t know what to do anymore.

I was waiting for the iphone 5 to be launched when the iphone 4s was announced I knew it was a joke and I bought a Bionic. I love it and while I do want Ics I dont need it. I wish we got a yes or no if it is coming but it is what it is, the bionic is still a great phone

ICS. At least we now know we can expect an update soon, even though it’s not as soon as a lot of people would like. I too think that MOT should get it right first before releasing a major OS upgrade to their devices. One thing that I am wondering about though is if it’s going to be a problem if your device is rooted, to receive the ICS upgrade. Does anybody here know?

Buy a moto phone and updates are always late, unfair and unanounced. I really agree that Bionic users are totally getting screwed by Moto. Knowing that the Razzr was only six month’s past the Bionic’s release the company should have scrapped it but because their were too many people like this user who wantnted 4g better than the HTC early offerings, we were suckered into a bad purchase decision. Moto laughed at us while they went to the bank and big bad Verizon didn’t care; but they never do.

Razzr may get ICS sooner than Bionic but they all are going to be disappointed at the new screen resolutions runing under quad-core processors. Even the Razzr+ was lacking when it came to screen resolution.

Moto and other companies are going to nickle and dime us until the limits of the cell-phone are reached. We are already close when phone size vs. screen resolution size vs. the ability of the eye to see size converge. At the end of the day, the human eye will be the limiting factor.

At the end of the day one has to eveluate these devices on their ability to be a phone and nothing else. They were designed to be phones sold by a phone company to connect us vocaly an visually to our family and friends. Fast internet is nice but is only practical if it is tethered to a larger, more visual device. And where 4g may suck the power, there are plenty of power sources around in the real world.

Where the added features of ICS seem nice, in my experience, such updates tent to bring more problems than solutions. People were ranting about Gingerbread’s release a year ago, only ot rant some more when it broke some important features. We are not going to win and neither is moto or any other cell phone manufacture.

So one question remains, does your version of the operation system connect you well to your family and firends? IT DOES, especially if you are on the Verizon network. So let your phone be your phone and be satisfied and be eager to see what is going to be released a year from now.

Granted, today the Razzr guys have the edge but it is one that is going to dull quickly. If you need yearly changes, give up on the $200 phones plus two year contracts and just buy the stupid devices outright. If you want cutting-edge technology, pay for it. I do; at least once a year.

When the quad-core, properly resolute phones come out, I’ll be giving my Bionic away. In the mean time, it works just like it did when I bought it – and it was certainly better than my last phone!

I’m a Bionic owner & fine with ICS in Q3 – let Motorola work the bugs out on the RAZR owners. Remember the data drop issue? The Bionic work s great now but that stunk until they ironed it out.

What did they do to fix the data drop issues? I’m still having them with the Bionic.

I was having the same problem. I turned off the background data and haven’t dropped data since.

I purchased my two MOT bionics two weeks after release date and have had no problems. Do I need ICS update, maybe but my bionic is working great for me without it. My wifes bionic had a power on issue 3 months into use, which verizon replaced with a new BIONIC within five days. Updates are good for fixes to major issues or access to hidden features or great enhancements.

i have a feeling its NOT going to get it at all. especially since 4.1 is being rolled out to some devices that were pre-empted from 4.0 for the 4.1…. this would not be the first time verizon or Moto spoke something that did not come to frution (especially verizon; read: LIED!) though since people are gaining functionality with the hacks, its very good NEWS, but still major areas are a no go with the homebrews.

I dumped my iphone for my Bionic and will never look back. I don’t mind waiting for the ICS update. I work for a premium retailer of Verizon and I see first hand how things work when they first come out. The longer we wait the better. Also when I had my iphone and tried to update it to ios 5 it wiped my phone and itunes had an error message when I went to sync it. Luckily I had my contacts backed up through my gmail.

Droid 4 and RAZR MAXX were both released AFTER the original RAZR. That is why there were so many complaints by the original RAZR owners, about the lack of battery life. Bionic was released slightly before the RAZR, if I remember correctly.

I bought my Motorola Bionic 4 months ago. I love it. Screen is much bigger than the iphone4. I is much more user friendly. I had no problems with it. Although you have to watch out how many different games you download. All phones take each game differently

    Hey Everybody!!

If you know how to Google, then you’d realize that ICS has already been leaked for the bionic. In fact, I’m currently running 4.0.4 build 6.7.232. It’s not some havy

Hacky* ROM but the actual Verizon signed and dated July 6th. Working webtop 3.0 and everything, so why wait for Verizon to okay it, no root needed, just download and flash from SD card and Enjoy!!

The Bionic was how many months late coming out after CES? It was supposed to be the newest, latest, greatest. Motorola releases it and almost immediately releases the Razr (wouldn’t have purchased because of battery life and inability to switch battery out) and soon after the Razr Maxx. After making those of us who purchased the Bionic wait months for the phone, watching us rush to purchase it and then releasing 2 faster phones so quickly; I think they owe us a little more love then they are giving us. Motorola has shown one epic failure after another in handling the Bionic’s release and upgrades. I must say though that except for the camera it is a great phone.
