Motorola Droid X Gingerbread Update Leaks, Get it Now

Published

on

There have been numerous reports floating around today that Motorola Droid X Gingerbread update version 4.5.588 has been silently hitting devices. And while it’s still unknown as to whether or not this is the official build that Verizon is going to release to the masses, it looks like it can be pulled by anyone with a Droid X if a few conditions are met.

Motorola Droid X

First discovered at Droid X Forums, the update silently rolled out to one device owner and from there, it was confirmed by Motorola expert P3Droid to be the real deal.

Now, the update has been discovered and can be flashed right now by anyone with a Droid X with Blur version 2.3.340. If you don’t have that version of MotoBlur, don’t bother trying to get this. It should also be noted that there is no root method available for this version of Gingerbread.

So, without further ado, here are the instructions (courtesy of Droid-Life) to get Gingerbread version 4.5.588 installed on your Droid X right now:

Download this: Blur_Version.2.3.340.MB810.Verizon.en.US.zip
>1.  Download the file from above and drop it on the root of your SD card.
2.  Rename it to update.zip.
3.  Turn your phone all the way off.
4.  Boot into recovery: *Hold the Home button + Power.  When triangle appears, press Search.

5.  Choose the option to install update.zip using your volume keys.
6.  Your phone will now load the new Gingerbread.
7.  Enjoy!

Rooted users will have to go back to Gingerbread version 2.3.340 in order for this to work. So. follow those and you should have Gingerbread up and running on your Droid X in no time.

hmmm. my phone is slow as hell after installing gingerbread this way. locks up. i’ve had to pull the battery twice to get it to unfreeze. the other oddity – the android market doesn;t show any of apps in “mp apps”

i’ll have to hunt around and see what is up.

this is straight up B.S! Downloaded the Zip and moved it to SD card Root renamed it update.zip. with through the motions and it keeps saying installation aborted. Tried to rename it just update on (on the phone) and it wouldn’t let me save it. So I renamed it update from the comp moved it to SD card root and same thing. Installation aborted. What am I doing wrong? Tell me ,Please.

ditto! why does this always happen to me!

    • Charlie

      04/19/2011 at 3:51 am

are your naming the file “update” or “update.zip” because it already is a .zip file, and therefore only needs to be called “update”. If you rename the file “update.zip”, that’s not going to work because it ALREADY has the .zip extension; basically, renaming it “update.zip”.zip.

In short, just call it “update” (without the quotes of course!) Hope this helps.

        04/19/2011 at 11:47 am

I tried renaming it update and also update.zip and keep getting the same error, one error im getting is the traingle with ! and the android guy next to it…..then it says signature verification failed installation aborted…then I try to install through clockwork and rom manager and get the same error….

        • Alchemist311

          04/19/2011 at 4:07 pm

I’m not sure if this is your problem or not, but as soon as I changed this it worked.

The instructions say drop the file onto the root of your sd card. When it says this it does not mean go into the sd card folder. I means open your phone files and deposit it inside NO files or folders. The actual update file should appear after all of the thousand or so directories. Change the name there if you have to. Then boot in recovery.

Once again. That was just my personal problem, but maybe you made the same mistake.

It was doing the same to me when I downloaded it from my computer. The next day I downloaded it with phone, renamed the file and moved it using astro. And I also freed up some space on my phone…. got over 25% free space. then tried again and it worked.

perfect instalation…however as everyones noticed…lil glitchy, sync stays on even tho battery don’t drain, and also one of the biggest annoying problems is the led light. For some reason now im forced to use that led app flow. Anybody experiencing same problems. Debating wether to uninstall and wait for new update otherwise update went well, cept a bit glitchy and also overheatage.

im guessing bootloader mode, but i herd it changed. I dunno I might keep this for now until new update finally comes cuz i feel teased loll. Really glitchy now after few days beginnning was fine. Also im getting sick of having to use an app for my LED light agravates me.

I got 3G. Gotta turn off the WiFi to see it, as before. 130kbps on CNET’s Internet Speed Test with 3G (one bar) vs. 2874 over WiFi.

Some weirdness, though–when I backed-up the phone via the bundled/embedded app, the 3G turned on, even though I had WiFi activated.

Also, the “updating” icon never goes away from the notification bar.

    THANKS!!!

Great, clear instructions. Got it going on the first try, downloading straight to the SD card root via Opera (stock browser won’t download a zip file, I guess.)

I used Motorola’s stock “File” app to rename, no problems.

I did have one “Uh-oh”-moment, though. I had to guess that the “OK” on the screen bottom required pushing the hard “Menu”-button below it. No touch-screen input there, just hard buttons. Actually had to select “Ok” via the hard “Menu”-button twice–once to initiate the install, then, at the end, to reboot the phone.

I was also having trouble with the .zip file name issue. took my sd card out of phone and plugged to computer with card reader. copied the file to it after renaming the file. put back in phone and continued.worked just fine. looks really good. love it.

  23. Obearden

    05/02/2011 at 1:33 am

by the way. renamed it update.zip with the .zip at the end (with my computer set to show file extensions— go to file options in the view menu and uncheck “hide extensions for known file types” for xp. if using another version of windows just google how to show file extensions. otherwise you will end up with update.zip.zip as others have mentioned above.

It works very well. no problems so far. AND YES ALL MY CONTACT AND APPS WERE INTACT….

I had launcher-pro installed on my DX and that gave me some troubles after the upgrade was complete. So DX users might want to uninstall/disable launcher-pro if they have it. Otherwise the upgrade process was super smooth. Thanks for the simple instructions!

Quite a few subtle changes. different colors, seems quicker too. Holding the home key when on main home screen shows one page with a small snapshot of all 7 screens. Also on very nice feature, if you ignore an incoming call (whether you are already in a call or not) a pop-up called “text message reply” allows you to quickly choose from a list of pre-made (you can add your own as well) text messages and send a reply with just 2 key strokes. My old LG enVtouch did this and i have missed it. the launcher button is gone and there is a dock in its place with four customizable buttons. No problems so far.

So this is Gingerbread, blur version 4.5.588? Because the name of the file is blur_version 3.2.340, which is Android 2.2.1, which I have installed.
