Motorola Droid X2 Not Getting Android 4.0?

Published

on

We’ve already received one piece of bad news from Motorola in regards to the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update for its devices and now it looks like we have a third piece to add. According to a letter from Dorothy Hodges of the Corporate Consumer Advocacy Office, the Motorola Droid X2 is not listed as a device that will get the upgrade to Android 4.0 meaning the 3G device may be stuck on Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

The letter is in response to another letter addressing the Better Business Bureau complaining about the Motorola’s bootloader policy as well as the way it updates its Android phones.

Otherwise known as slow and fairly uninformative.

Motorola Droid X2 Not Getting Android 4.0?

Read: Motorola Droid X2 review.

Here in the letter in its entirety, courtesy of Droid-Life:

Dear Ivan,

I am responding to the complaint you filed with Better Business Bureau regarding our Droid X2 model phone. I reviewed your recent case notes and it is noted that you received information from Motorola regarding Bootloader unlock and Ice Cream Sandwich.

We are working to balance the operator requirement for security to the end user, while supporting the developer communities desire to use these products as a development platform. It is our intention to enable the unlockable/relockable bootloader currently found on Motorola XOOM on other devices, where carrier and operators will allow it. This process is requiring a good deal of consideration and technical infrastructure and we have no announcements to make at this time for unlocking any devices.

Droid X2 is not on our list of devices that are slated to get Ice Cream Sandwich, but that does not mean it is not continuing to get support. Though it will remain on Gingerbread it is eligible for software updates if it’s determined that any are needed.

Thank You,
Dorothy Hodges
Corporate Consumer Advocacy Office

Oddly enough, Motorola lists it as getting the update while Verizon left it off of its list. At this point, it looks pretty bleak for Droid X2 owners though and we wouldn’t hold your breath.

Still, this is an Android update we’re talking about and anything can happen.

The news comes after Motorola detailed its Android 4.0 update schedule once, and it was nothing but bad news.

That update saw Moto promise updates for recently released devices in Q3 of this year, not quite the timetable many were expecting.

its all because they want you to buy the new 4g phones but what good will they do if you dont have 4g in your area just another business ploy

Maybe when x2 owneres stop purchasing Motorola products and move to Samsung or HTC in the future and Moto sales will decline, than they might reconsider their policies.
    Unhappy Droid X2 Owner.

Yep, my next one is going to be the Samsung Journal. Thanks Moto for disappointing a life long dedicated and faithful customer, since the days of the i series Nextel. I am done with your antics. I have spent my last dime on your products.

I will never purchase another Motorola product again, piece of crap products with terrible support and upgrade cadence. I will either purchase an HTC or iPhone if I do decide to keep a smartphone package when my current contract is over… This company has really turned me of on smartphones in their entirety.

I don’t see why that can’t put the update on my X2 its barely a year old. All of the phone companys are just money money grabbers. First taking away the unlimited data plan that was just a stupid move I wouldn’t be surprised if people did move to the prepaid phones where u can get unlimited everything for $50. Now their saying phones that just recently came out in the past year can’t be updated that’s a load of bull all they want is more and more money. I won’t say this is my last Motorola phone because I personally love my phone its the phone companys I don’t like.

Seriously, my wife’s moto droid razor got the update to ice cream today, while my droid x2 did not of course. I have been telling everybody how great Motorola is and the quality of the product, but refusing to upgrade is for one reason, they release about two to three new smartphones each year, who would by the newer more expensive one when they have the same software on the older models? I love Android because of the flexibility over iphones, in my opinion, but moto and verizons locking out these updates has made me rethink my view and instead of promoting Moto’s I am now going to be arguing against and telling everybody NOT to buy one. Goodbye Motorola.
