Netbook Reviews and First Looks

Published

on

A couple of interesting looks at Netbooks rolled up in my feeds this morning and they are worth taking a look at.

First up, Brad Linder of Liliputing has posted a review of the HP Mini 1000. He gives quite a good comparison of the new Mini 1000 versus the earlier HP Mini 2133 and finds a number of the differences not quite up to snuff.

Brian Hollar of Thinking on the Margins is exploring the world of Netbooks for the first time with a used Asus Eee 901 and it seems to be love at first sight in his first looks at the device.

If you can’t tell, I really love this thing so far. It’s the best $265 I’ve spent in a long time. I’ll continue to pass on my impressions as I get to use it a bit more. For now if I could, I’d give it 5.5 out of 5 stars.

My netbook has really changed things… my life wasn’t massively altered, but the machine enhances what I do and makes things easier. It’s a chain-reaction thing; one thing becomes a lil’simpler, the rest follows… I dig it.

The ASUS Eee PC 1000 can travel with me when another notebook would weigh me down, and unlike the MacBook Air, it’s not so expensive that it’s a threat. (That big of an investment I’d rather have in slate-Tablet form)

I’m interested in these technologies (and support ’em) because I think *many* people are able to benefit from “the netbook” when used “properly.” It fits a need some of us have, and at the right price.

Having a 10″ screen has its perks, too… although the machine weighs a bit more, it’s better for movies and writing.

One thing that I’d recommend however: TRY to try the keyboard BEFORE buying… some are just too cramped for me to type comfortably… that’d make it a lot less for me.

I totally agree with Brad in trying out the keyboard first. I was in BestBuy and went down the Netbook row just doing that. What I found was that the placement of the shift key was off on one of them that was the deal breaker for me. I gravitated to the HP just because the keyboard felt terrific.
