Nexus 5 Accessories Flood Amazon

Published

Google’s Nexus 5 isn’t official and may not even be called Nexus 5, but that hasn’t stopped accessory makers from teasing their wares and flooding Amazon with accessories including cases and film protectors ahead of the device’s rumored launch date.

The Nexus 5 rumor mill suggests that the device could be announced, alongside Android 4.4 KitKat and a new Nexus 10, before the month of October is over. A specific date has still not be settled upon though October 31st, Halloween, has been rumored as a possibility. Google typically sends out press invites ahead of a launch event but the company has yet to do so.

Device or not, accessory makers have been busy trying to capitalize on the Nexus 5’s big name with Spigen leading the way. Earlier today, the company teased a new case for the Nexus 5, even going as far as to use a render of the Nexus 5 in its advertisement for its upcoming Neo Hybrid case that the company is calling a “revolution.”

Spigen is not alone as other companies have flooded Amazon with cases and other accessories made for a Google Nexus 5, a device that hasn’t been announced and likely won’t arrive for a few weeks at least. We’ve found tons of Nexus 5 accessory listings on Amazon’s website from companies like SUPCASE and Ionic that boldly proclaim that the cases won’t fit the Nexus 4 but will fit a new Nexus 5 from Google. Some of the products don’t even have images yet but the companies are still taking orders.

Oddly enough, the companies are saying that their products will ship on dates ranging from October 31st to November 5th. Those dates, as we’ve pointed out before, are likely based on rumors rather than facts or inside information from Google.

This appears to be a growing trend amongst manufacturers. We saw case makers tease Samsung Galaxy Note 3 accessories on Amazon and elsewhere, well ahead of the Galaxy Note 3’s arrival. One of the cases we ordered suggested that it would arrive in a few weeks but we ended up cancelling the order after the manufacturer told us it would take much longer than that. So instead of actually providing something useful, it’s pretty clear that these “placeholders” are attention grabs and not much more.

Nexus 5 cases may continue to pop up on Amazon ahead of its release date, consumers would be wise to avoid them and instead, wait for authentic cases to emerge in the days and weeks after its arrival.

Google itself will likely provide official Nexus 5 accessories to consumers through its Google Play Store. Those accessories, however, haven’t appeared online just yet.

The Nexus 5 is expected to feature a 5-inch display, Snapdragon 800 processor, mid-range price tag, support for AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint, Android 4.4 KitKat and a brand new design.

That Ionic case is pretty evidently for an N4: You can see the glitter pattern around the camera, and while I could understand if they just put an N4 in there to model for the picture (the two nexi do have very similar dimensions, after all), the speaker cutout is in the wrong place for the N5, from what we know. The N5’s speakers are on the bottom, not a slit on the back.
