Nexus 5 Leaks Again as Google Readies Apps for Android 4.4 KitKat

The Nexus 5 leaks continue to flow freely as Google prepares for a Nexus 5 release that may arrive to a public that already knows all there is to know about this new smartphone. Additionally, Google is updating many apps which could be a sign that the Android 4.4 update is also close to ready for Nexus devices.

After a possible announcement event ended yesterday with no Nexus 5, sights returned to the rumor of a Halloween announcement and a November 1st Nexus 5 release date, but as Google and KitKat continue their long teasing of the Nexus 5 and Android 4.4 shoppers are still left without concrete details.

This morning a collection of App updates, new leaks and teasers continue the Nexus 5 hype, which Google is possibly orchestrating to steal attention from competing phones.

Nexus 5 Unboxing

We’ve seen the Nexus 5 retail box and boxes and boxes of Nexus 5 units destined for sale at a carrier in Canada and this morning a user on Overclockers.co.uk unboxed the Nexus 5 early. The image below shows the Nexus 5 out of a box, but not powered on.

The Nexus 5 unboxing photo below comes from the UK, where an employee of an un-named company posted then removed this photo.

This is important for several reasons. Typically an average user cannot get their hands on an unreleased device in retail packaging until the release is days away. The user who posted the Nexus 5 photo is likely an employee at a carrier or a big box retailer. The user removed the photo and deleted all posts after expressing concern for his job.

It is very likely this unit came from a store which is ready to sell the Nexus 5 as soon as Google announces the device officially. It also matches the box shown in the leak showing boxes that are reportedly full of Nexus 5 units. This leak backs up several others, and appears to be a legitimate retail box, which is a very good sign for a fast release.

Google Apps Prepped for Android 4.4

Starting on the 28th and continuing through this morning Google rolled out a number of app updated for Gmail, Hangouts, Drive, Play Magazines, Google+, Google Keep, Google Wallet — and many other Google apps received new updates this month. According to TechRadar, Google updated 16 apps in the last 48 hours.

While it is not a sure sign, there is also a report from a Gotta Be Mobile reader says the new Google Play 4.4 version arrived on his Nexus 4 this morning. The version he reports seeing is Google Play 4.4.21, which could be the same build that arrived on a device the possession of Android Police, though it’s impossible to tell as the publication blurred the final 2 numbers.

Android 4.4 KitKat Teasers

This morning the official Twitter account for the Android 4.4. KitKat update posted an image of a passport with Android KitKat on it with a stamp marked October 29th and various other Android 4.4 and KitKat markings. It’s not clear if this is a sign that the Android 4.4 KitKat update finished all stages needed for release yesterday, or if it is just another in a long line of KitKat teasers.

Nestle also posted an Android 4.4 video showing a magician stealing a KitKat. Again, this is yet another teaser that doesn’t quite add up, but it’s clear that Google is doing all it can to keep interest high.

Nexus 5 Photo Samples

Rounding out the last-minute leaks are a collection of Nexus 5 camera samples which arrived on October 28th thanks to Google+ automatic updates. The image below is all that remains after users contacted Phandroid to ask that many photos be taken down.

Did somebody noticed the passport says, “Date of activation: 3 Sept 2013” could this be the launch date for kitkat and nexus 5 as both are rumored to be launched together.

So you’re telling me that I’ve missed the whole launch even though I’ve been pressing F5, and gained a sore finger for my troubles, by 2 months?!! Nah, I think 3rd September was when actually Google confirmed Android 4.4 will be named after KitKat.
