Published

Google still hasn’t confirmed a Nexus 5 Android 5.0 Lollipop release date or a Nexus 4 Android 5.0 Lollipop release date though at least one carrier expects the two updates to roll out in the near future.

Android L is called Android 5.0 Lollipop. The update will be accompanied by two new Nexus devices including a Nexus 9 from HTC and a Nexus 6 from Motorola. Both devices will help usher in a new era for Google and its Android operating system. Problem is, Google still hasn’t confirmed a specific Android 5.0 Lollipop release date for owners of older Nexus smartphones and tablets.

Earlier this month, the company confirmed several Android 5.0 Lollipop updates for arrival including updates for the Nexus 5, Nexus 4, Nexus 7, Nexus 7 2012, and Nexus 10. And while those updates are confirmed, the Nexus Android 5.0 Lollipop release date was not. And while the release dates still aren’t known, things are trending in the right direction.

This week, Google announced the start of the Android 5.0 Lollipop update. The company began pushing the Android 5.0 Lollipop source code to the Android Open Source Project, also known as the AOSP. The push completed a few days ago and repositories for Nexus devices can now be found on Google’s developer website. In the near future, we should see Google post factory images and binaries for older Nexus devices, something that will allow Nexus users to install the update manually. That could happen sometime this month though Google still hasn’t announced when it will be releasing the software to non-developers.

Google’s Nexus Android 5.0 Lollipop OTA update still hasn’t emerged though rumors point to an arrival on November 12th. That date still hasn’t been confirmed though at least one carrier is expecting the Android 5.0 Lollipop update to roll out in the near future.

Canadian carrier Rogers claims that the Nexus 5 Android 5.0 Lollipop release date and Nexus 4 Android 5.0 Lollipop release date are “coming soon.” The company made the announcement on its regularly updated Android update schedule that includes plans for Samsung Galaxy devices, HTC devices, Motorola devices, and more.

The carrier does not confirm a specific date but the language and the appearance of these two updates means that Google is making progress and that we should see a Nexus 4 Lollipop release and a Nexus 5 Lollipop release emerge in the near future. Google continues to stick with its “coming weeks” line for both updates though it’s assumed that both updates will emerge sometime this month.

Nexus Android 5.0 rumors suggest that Wi-Fi versions of the Nexus 7 and the Nexus 10 will be the first to get Android 5.0 Lollipop. Those updates are rumored to be followed by updates for cellular Nexus 7 models, the Nexus 5, and the Nexus 4. The first updates were originally slated for November 3rd though bugs pushed back the release. It’s not clear how the delay will affect the initial timing.

What we do know is that Android 5.0 Lollipop is going to be a massive update for both the Nexus 4 and Nexus 5. The full change log for the Android 5.0 Lollipop upgrade has leaked ahead of its release, giving Nexus users a glimpse at what to expect from Google’s biggest Android update in years. A file, which is 20MB in size or so, has been released by Al Sutton. The change log is extensive and it details everything from bug fixes to new features.

Google’s Android 5.0 Lollipop release is expected to land for a number of other devices as well including Samsung’s Galaxy S5, Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 3, Motorola’s Moto X, Moto G and Moto E, and HTC’s One M8 and One M7. Release dates will vary based on region and carrier though most manufacturers appear as though they will get their updates out in late 2014 and 2015. The Nexus Android 5.0 Lollipop update will simply kick things off.
