Nexus 5 Release Date Rumors: Don’t Believe the Hype

Published

on

With a Nexus 5 launch date all but confirmed for October, there are bound to be all sorts of rumors flying around in the weeks before its launch. One that prospective buyers shouldn’t believe is a rumor that suggests that the Nexus 5 release date is October 30th.

For weeks now, Nexus 5 rumors have been flying around, suggesting an assortment of things. First, thanks to a video from Google and an FCC filing, we think that the LG D820 is, in fact, an LG Nexus, possibly called Nexus 4 or Nexus 5, the name remains out of reach. Leaks have shown off the device in the wild and rumors suggest that the smartphone will feature a large 1080p display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor, 13MP camera, and a sleek design that appears to be draw from the Nexus 7.

This Nexus 5 "release date" is nothing more than speculation.

This Nexus 5 “release date” is nothing more than speculation.

October 14th has been rumored as the Nexus 5’s launch date with Android 4.4 KitKat and a new Nexus 10 from Asus likely in tow. There have also been several reports that suggest that October 31st or October 30th will be the Nexus 5 release date. And while it’s possible that we could see the Nexus 5 arrive on October 30th or October 31st, the evidence here is more than flimsy.

Several weeks ago, a Nexus 5 release date rumor was started based on an Amazon listing for a Spigen screen protector and protective cases for a device the accessory maker is calling the Nexus 5. The accessories retail for $24.99 and $8.99 respectively and Spigen says that it plans to have them in-stock on October 30th and October 31st.

Some sites are now speculating that these could potentially hint at the Nexus 5 release date. And while we wish that were true, it simply is not.

For one, Android Police already debunked the original rumor with a quote from a Spigen representative who said that the company simply was simply estimating in regards to a Nexus 5 release date, based on credible rumors that suggest a Nexus 5 in October. In other words, these listings are placeholders and nothing more than that.

Spigen often teases accessories for unannounced devices ahead of their rumored launches. It did so with the iPhone 5S and it did so with the Samsung Galaxy Note 3. So this is nothing new.

The company is likely preparing for the Nexus 5 launch like other accessory makers though, for publicity purposes, decided to put cases out early. While Spigen will likely have Nexus 5 cases and screen protectors available at some point for the Nexus 5, we advise those who are thinking about buying the Nexus 5 to hold off on buying these accessories.

With a Nexus 5 launch expected in October, it’s possible that the release date will fall in late October. Google typically gets its devices out a few weeks after announcing them. However, at this point, October 30th and October 31st should be treated as every other day in October and nothing more than that.

Spigen tells Gotta Be Mobile that the dates are “simply an estimated placeholder” which they decided upon “due to rumors that are circulating.” The company tells us that it “will be coming out with a full product line-up for the Nexus 5 but there is no concrete ETA for those products yet.”

it’s Android/Nexus, it doesn’t need hype, it is already a great platform still 3 years ahead of ios 7. I am selling my GS4 and going pure nexus, nothing beats stock, and I trust google knows what their doing, Android has grown leaps and bounds ahead of what it once was thanks to Google Buying them out, and their only getting better, because unlike apple google is a company constantly looking ahead to the future.

iPhone is a minority phone, with about 13% of the market, so they can’t be called sheep as they are not following the flock.

Actually, the main reason the Nexus 5 is rumoured for an October launch is because Nestle Germany let slip that this was when Android 4.4 (KitKAt) would be released. The Nexus 5 will undoubtedly be the first device to run 4.4, so it stands to reason both launches will coincide.

the last two nexus phones were ANNOUNCED in October (with the new Android OS), but actually RELEASED in November. Google could announce and release both in October, but historically no Nexus phone (1,2,3,4) has been actually released before November.
