Nexus 5 Rumors Add a Surprise Device

Rumor has it, Google may keep the Nexus 4 around with a new report suggesting that while the Nexus 5 may get a bump in price, it may be joined by a cheaper Nexus 4 that supports LTE data and comes with more storage.

Last month, a device that is thought to be the Nexus 5 leaked out inside of an Android 4.4 KitKat teaser video from Google. The device is heavily rumored to be from LG and it has leaked out numerous times over the last few weeks including in a lengthy video that showed just about everything consumers need to know about Google’s brand new smartphone.

Rumors have suggested that the Nexus 5 launch could take place as soon as today though Google hasn’t announced anything yet. At the very least, October is shaping up to include the Nexus 5 launch, even if today doesn’t go down. When the Nexus 5 launch does go down, we expect Google to unveil a number of new products including the Asus Nexus 10 and Android 4.4 KitKat update. And now, thanks to new information, it appears that the Nexus 5 could be joined by a new Nexus.

A report from Android Geeks, a site that was dead on about the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 launch date well in advance, claims that Google will be introducing two Nexus devices, a Nexus 5 with a $399 starting price tag, something that we have expected for several weeks, and a Nexus 4 LTE that will take the price points of the previous Nexus 4 and serve as a cheaper option.

According to their information, Google’s Nexus 5 launch will breakdown like this:

  • Nexus 5 16GB – $399
  • Nexus 5 32GB – $450
  • Nexus 4 16GB – $299
  • Nexus 4 32GB – $350

The Nexus 4 would be unchanged it seems from the previous model, only, it would have 4G LTE data speeds on board, data speeds that were blocked with the Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean update. The Nexus 5 would then serve as the more expensive flagship model in this scenario. This is the first that we’ve heard of a cheaper Nexus 4. And while it’s just popping up on the radar, it’s possible that Google will go this route.

In the past, we’ve heard rumors of a Motorola Nexus smartphone and of multiple Nexus smartphones, so it wouldn’t be shocking to see Google push out multiple devices. The company is also trying to compete with two new iPhones for the first time in the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c.

The Nexus 5 is expected to feature a 5-inch 1080p display, quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor, 8MP camera, a new design and support for AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile. If the Nexus 4 LTE is real, it would include a 4.7-inch 720p display, Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, 8MP camera, and the familiar glass and plastic design.

This article is complete hogwash. There will be no “Nexus 4 LTE” . Google only releases one model per year, to influence design. The Nexus 5 is this year’s Nexus phone, there will be no others. It’s unlocked, has multiple LTE bands, CDMA, HSPA+ is 4.96″ with full HD 1080p, 2GB RAM, 8PM OIS camera and comes with Snapdragon 800. PLUS, it’s a hair smaller than the Nexus 4. Yeah, they packed a 4.96″ 1080p display into a case a hair smaller than last year’s 4.7″ 720 Nexus 4.

And it will be PRICED close to last year’s Nexus 4.

If they re-released a Nexus 4, even with LTE, it would LOSE in all the benchmark tests as CPUs have moved on. Google is not going to do something stupid like that. They have a winner with the LG G2-based Nexus 5 — and they will be going full throttle with that.

Google looks forward, they don’t look back. There will not be a “runner up” Nexus, it will only be the gen5 Nexus 5.
