Nexus 5 Rumors Take Yet Another Turn

Published

on

It appears that Nexus 5 rumors have taken yet another turn today as a recent FCC filing is now back in contention as the Nexus 5 thanks to backtracking from a source that ruled it out in the first place.

Nexus 5 rumors have been flying around for several weeks now, picking up quite a bit of steam thanks to a leak in one of Google’s own Android 4.4 KitKat video that appeared to depict an unknown Nexus smartphone.

The device has been speculated to be an LG device and thanks to some fantastic work from designers, we’ve seen the leak get brought to life in a series of renders.

What’s more is that we recently saw an FCC filing seemingly confirm a possible LG Nexus 5 with a device called LG D820 passing through the FCC’s clutches on its way to unknown destinations. Almost immediately, the well-known evleaks came out of the gates, saying that the LG D820 was not going to be a new Nexus and that it would instead arrive as a CDMA version of the LG G2.

As we pointed out, there were holes in that argument, namely the fact that the camera sensors were in two different places. And today, evleaks has gone back on his statement saying that he is “happy” that he was wrong about the LG D820 FCC filing.

He doesn’t explicitly say that the thinks the FCC device is the Nexus 5 but given that he’s happy and given how close the filing seemingly was to the device that emerged on video, it’s safe to say that there is still a strong chance that the device we’ve seen emerge is the Nexus 5 from Google. Well, at least one of the Nexus smartphones.

Rumors suggest that Motorola could be making a Nexus smartphone as well with whispers suggesting a device that will be different than the Moto X and will be arriving sometime in the fourth quarter meaning between October and December. Rumors suggest the Nexus 5 will be touching down in October so it could be that we see an LG Nexus 5 and a Motorola Nexus 5.

For years, rumors have suggested two Nexus smartphones and given the climate of the rumors right now, this year seems like it certainly could be the year that we see multiple.

Nexus 5 rumors have pointed to one of the device’s, the LG Nexus 5, sporting hardware similar to the LG G2, the flagship that will be bringing a 1080p display, 13MP camera and more to buyers in the U.S. this month. It likely won’t share a design with LG’s new smartphone, however.

I hope it is true that both LG and Moto are making Nexus phones. A 5” phone by LG and a smaller phone by Moto would make good couple of high end inexpensive phones and really shake up the market and hopefully make other companies bring down their prices.

It seems clear to me that Google is no longer numbering Nexus devices by the order of appearance in the world but is now numbering by screen size, e.g. Nexus 7? So there can easily be a Nexus 4, v2 with a screen size of around 4 inches, perhaps made by Motorola, and a Nexus 5, v1 with a screen size of around 5 inches, perhaps made by LG..

That doesn’t mean anything, of course it’s going to be called the Nexus 5. Phones never follow that pattern, but tablets do because, like laptops, most companies choose to to rename them. Samsung has a Galaxy Note 8, which is a 8 inch tablet, but when talking about phones the number only means which iteration it is, hence the Galaxg Note 1, 2, and 3. Unless I’m mistaken and the Galaxy Note 3 is 3 inches. But, all jokes aside, of course it’ll be called the Nexus 5 because most tablet most tablets are named after their size like Note 8, and the Galaxy Tab 10.1, but no phone is.

You are actually incorrect, Jason. There is no explicit rule that states whether the number stands for screen size or iteration. It depends on the company who makes the device. Samsung names their galaxy phones in iterations, but the Nexus 4, 5, 7, 7 v2, and 10 are all named for their screen size, not iteration.

Actually, no. There was the Nexus One, then the Nexus S, then the Galaxy Nexus, then the Nexus 4. I’m pretty sure the Nexus 5 means it’s the 5th nexus phone, and doesn’t have anything to do with the screen size. The tablets are a different story, though.

Motorola will make a Nexus 4 with LG making a Nexus 5. No need to have two 5 inch options. One smaller phone, one larger. That’s what they will do.

You keep saying that but it’s ridiculous. Google is not going down to a 4.0″ screen for their Nexus smartphone in 2013. And their Nexus 4 was 4.7″. The Nexus 5 is 4.96″ and fits into a case SMALLER than the Nexus 4. That is what they are going with. They do NOT need or want anything else. Any smaller phone would just be ignored, when that Nexus 5 is available.

HERE is a render of the 4.96″ LG-D820 (Nexus 5) with FCC measurements sitting next to a 4.7″ Nexus 4.

The Nexus 5 is slightly smaller, yet has a LARGER SCREEN. If you liked the Nexus 4, you will love the Nexus 5 and forget about a Nexus 4 v2.

Possibly the screen by LG and the motherboard by Motorola.

Yea Google is going to make 2 phones and have the market divided between them. And one device will be based off the Moto X at 4.7″ and the other based off the G2 at 5-5.2″. Makes perfect sense. /sarcasm

Like anyone in their right mind would take the Moto X specs over a G2 when the screen difference would only be about .3″ both running on the same stock 4.4 Android.

There will be one Nexus and it will end up being about the same size as the Nexus 4. End O Story.

It’s not about two different devices, it’s about two different devices for two different markets. N5 will be a top tier elite phone, while the N4.2 will be more cost effective hardware aimed at entry level markets. Don’t try to compare the two, as they are apples and oranges intended two totally different markets.

Google have already released the ‘new Nexus 4’ – its called the Moto X. The Nexus 5 will be the LG G2.

Have any of you guys considered that some people may prefer the Moto X because of screen size?

    I see it this way:

The iPhone 5 screen is too small. It bugs me.

The Galaxy S4 Screen is way too big and gigantic. I couldn’t fit the thing in my pocket comfortably.

The Nexus 5 is even larger.

However, the Moto X screen is smaller than the S4, but larger than the iPhone 5.

The Nexus 5 may have the superiority on hardware power, but for users looking for the phone that is “just the right size,” the Moto X seems to hit that spot perfectly.

Solution? Make a 4.7″ phone with the Nexus 5 hardware specs. THEN you have won my attention. Throw in the Lumia 1020’s 41 MP PureView camera and I’ll slap my credit card on the table immediately.

I mean, the only reason I don’t just buy a Lumia 1020 is because it’s a windows phone… If it was android my mind would have already been made. The 4.5″ screen is the perfect compromise. I actually worry the 4.7″ screen on the Moto X might be as uncomfortable as the Galaxy S4, but the bezel of the body is also much slimmer, so I’m hoping that evens things out.

In the end, regardless if you get the N5 or the Moto X, I think even the power users out there are going to be happy.

The Nexus 5 screen is larger than the Galaxy S4 screen but the actual size of the phone itself is smaller. If the D8020 is the Nexus 5, then the size of the phone is actually smaller than the Galaxy Nexus but has a bigger screen than the Nexus 4.

If the bezels are as short as they sound like they will be, then the size of the screen won’t matter as the phone will be small anyways

What you said makes no sense, the Nexus 4 had a 4.7″ screen like you are asking, and the Nexus 5 in the FCC filing has a 4.98″ screen with a smaller overall phone size verses the Nexus 4.

    • chazzmatt

      09/11/2013 at 7:02 pm

NO, the Nexus 5 is not larger. Who told you that? The Nexus 5 has a 4.96″ display but a body smaller than the last year’s 4.7″ Nexus 4.

If you read the FCC filing it states the battery size as 2300 . That makes it quite obvious that these 2 LG phones will not be a Nexus device . It is beyond me how no one is talking about that .

2300 mAh . Sorry for not being more specific .
