Nexus 7 2 Release Pegged for July with Price Increase

Published

on

The Nexus 7 2 release date once again is pegged for this July though the device is now said to have an increased price tag from the original Nexus 7 which arrived last July starting at a mere $199.

Prior to Google I/O 2013 in May, rumors swirled in regards to a new Nexus 7, presumably called the Nexus 7 2. At the show however, the only new Nexus that Google announced was the Samsung Galaxy S4 Nexus or Google Edition that will be hitting the Google Play Store later on this month. Since the end of I/O though, rumors pertaining to a new Nexus 7 have swirled with the latest indicating that the device is scheduled for a launch in July, much like its predecessor.

That time frame has been backed by a new report from the hit-or-miss publication Digitimes which claims that the Nexus 7 2 will indeed be arriving in July, likely on the Google Play Store.

However, it appears that Google may be looking to increase the Nexus 7 2 price in order to move it away from cheap, entry level tablets that have been flooding the market. Instead, the price of the Nexus 7 2 has been pegged for $230, a $30 increase over the Nexus 7 which checked in with a $199 price tag. That price is said to be for a 16GB model which could mean that Google will start with 16GB and 32GB variants this time around rather than start with an 8GB and 16GB models like it did last year.

A Nexus 7 2 would replace the current Nexus 7.

A specific release date isn’t yet known though given that Google is rumored to be releasing Android 4.3 sometime in the weeks after the June 26th launch of the Samsung Galaxy S4 Nexus and HTC One Nexus, a July release date is at least looking quite good. More recently, the Nexus 7 dock accessory disappeared from the Google Play Store completely, a sign that something new may be on the way.

Specifications of the Nexus 7 2 are thought to include high-end features without the price tag, a characteristic of Google’s Nexus devices. The new Nexus 7 is rumored to have a 7-inch 1080p display and a quad-core processor possibly of the Snapdragon 800 variety.

A micro usb slot would be a given. I’m hoping for a micro SDXC slot.

I think Google has been pretty clear about no external memory with Nexus. I would be very surprised to ever see it again with the Nexus brand.

I am buying a tablet this year and I will certainly buy Nexus 7.2 if it arrive in July. If they make me wait until September, than I’ll have to think between Nexus and iPad mini 2, and I think that mini 2 will win the battle.

I hope that they will stay away from pointless rear camera on Nexus and will direct that money to making better hardware and finishing touches so we don’t have those infamous “screen lift” issues on the second gen devices.

I love my Nexus 7 16 but I want one with a data plan so I’ll definitely be springing for the new one, can’t wait!

Personally I want the back camera, I use it like a scanner for docs and such. works great for that. that is one of the main reasons I have hesitated thus far to get the nexus 7. That and I tend not to invest in first gen products.
