Nexus 7 Android 4.2 Jelly Bean Update Coming Soon

Published

on

Asus, the company that makes the Nexus 7, has revealed that the Nexus 7 Android 4.2 Jelly Bean update will be hitting its 7-inch tablet at some point in the near future.

In a post on its CampusLife website, the company confirmed that the Nexus 7 Android 4.2 Jelly Bean update would be arriving soon for the tablet. It did not specify exactly when the update would be rolling out but given that a plethora of Nexus devices, including new Nexus 7 tablets are arriving soon, the timing of the announcement isn’t shocking in the slightest.

The Nexus 7 is also a Wi-Fi device which means it’s not attached to a carrier making it extremely easy for Google to get it updated with the latest software.

The Nexus 7 will get Android 4.2 soon.

Asus remains mum about the exact timing of the roll out, saying that the update will arrive “in the very near future.” That could mean on or around November 13th, the date that Google plans to unleash the Nexus 4 smartphone and the Nexus 10 tablet as well as a 32GB Nexus 7 tablet with 3G capabilities. If not November 13th, then likely sometime soon after.

Currently, the Nexus 7 tablet is running Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, Google’s previous version of Android, and an operating system that it launched with back in July.

The Android 4.2 Jelly Bean update is an incremental update in that it adds some features but doesn’t necessarily overhaul the entire operating system. Instead, the software will come with some new features including one called Photo Sphere where users can take 360 degree photos that appear like Street View imagery. It’s an exciting concept, and one that just recently leaked for the Samsung Galaxy Nexus.

Other features include a Gesture-sensitive keyboard, a new Quick Settings menu in the Notifications and more. Overall, it looks to be a minor but good update over Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and one that Nexus 7 owners should be not only looking forward to but looking out for.

Asus has not said when its other devices will get the update to Android 4.2 Jelly Bean.

Thanks everyone who sent this in!

I’m looking forward to trying out the “stock” keyboard with they swipe gestures, so I can possibly ditch my Swype beta keyboard.

The zip and apk for the 4.2 keyboard are already out. Actually I’m typing this with it and its amazingly smooth. Of course you need to be rooted and if you want to flash the zip you need a custom recovery. Linkhttps://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1964663
