Nexus 7 Android 4.4 KitKat Update Annoying Users

Published

on

It appears that the Nexus 4 Android 4.4 KitKat update isn’t the only KitKat update that’s annoying its user base. In addition, it appears that the Nexus 7 Android 4.4 KitKat update is also annoying its users, many of whom are still waiting and wondering about their Over-the-Air upgrade.

Earlier this month, Google released the Android 4.4 KitKat update. First, it arrived on the Nexus 5, Google’s new Nexus smartphone that emerged on shelves just a few weeks ago. Then, Google announced roll outs for several other devices including the Nexus 7 and the Nexus 10. Google specifically stated that the Nexus 7 Wi-Fi, both the 2012 and 2013 models, and the Nexus 10 would start seeing their updates roll out last week.

Unfortunately, for many users, that didn’t happen. As we noted, many Nexus 7 owners complained about not receiving the update, even after Google announced the roll out and posted the factory images to its website. Google complicated things even further when it posted the factory images for the cellular versions of the Nexus 7 but declined to offer an OTA upgrade.

Last night, Google went ahead and posted factory images for a brand new Android 4.4 KitKat update build, allowing users to download the files and manually install the update, also known as sideloading. From the looks of things, that new update is becoming available for at least some owners of the Nexus 7 though the situation remains confusing, and frustrating, for Nexus 7 owners in the United States and elsewhere.

Nexus 7 owners are expressing their frustration with the update process on XDA, on Google+, and on social media sites like Twitter. And while many owners are frustrated about the lack of an OTA update, more than a week later, others are fuming about the lack of communication from Google’s end. After announcing last week’s roll out, the company has gone quiet and hasn’t provided users with any specific information about the Nexus 7, Nexus 4 or Nexus 10 roll outs.

While many Nexus 4 and Nexus 7 owners are steamed about the confusion and the long wait for an OTA, it’s important to realize that Google likely did this because it discovered a bug inside the original KitKat build.

It’s also important to remember that previous Nexus Android updates have been extremely buggy and that Google may be working to ensure that this upgrade is not. And finally, Nexus 4 and Nexus 7 users should keep in mind the fact that these updates will arrive, for all users, well ahead of the updates for the Galaxy S4, Galaxy Note 3 and more.

For now, Nexus 7 users can take solace in the fact that Google is working hard to get these Android 4.4 KitKat updates out. And while they might be rolling out slowly, they will eventually come to every owner of the Nexus 7 2012 and Nexus 7 2013.

No one realizes it, but the later you bought your Nexus 7, the later you received the update. I bought mine a month or so ago and I received the OTA update a week and a half AFTER the official OTA began rolling out for the Nexus 7.

Not true. I bought mine several months ago. Still no update.

Not true. I bought my Nexus 7 as soon as it became available at Best Buy, which was several days before the official launch date. Still waiting for Android 4.4.

Its unacceptable that the Moto X on Verizon has already received the 4.4 update but my Nexus 4 is still sitting here on 4.3. I buy nexus products to be ahead of the curve when it comes to updates and OS, they are failing to meet that promise for their user base. Just make a comment so we know whats going on instead of keeping us in the dark.

If the delay is due to a bug that needs to be fixed so be it. I mean, is your Nexus 7 less productive without KitKat? Come on! Get a girlfriend and stop complaining about something so trivial. Get a life people

I totally agree, @Fred. This doesn’t count as “annoying.” Releasing a battery-sucking, crashing or poor-performance update would have us howling – and with a real reason.

Call the wait an exercise in self control.. This first-world problem doesn’t deserve any further attention.

If it is buggy, then Android dropped the ball during the beta/in-house testing that must be done & addressed before going public with a rollout date(s). Do you hear that affordable care act websites?
It just upsets your customer base. Don’t set a date in stone & expect your IT’s to meet the date just because you’ve announced it to be so!
I’d rather of heard it would rollout in 12/13 & then be pleasantly surprised to see it OTA updating in late 11/13.
    See how that works?

Alright, I’m replying to my own post – I received Kitkat 4.4 on 11/22. I’ve put it through the paces that are important to me & so far so good.
Bonus – iOS 6.1.3 programs converted to Android seem to work better since the 4.4 update.
        Has anyone else experienced this?

if the Nexus 10 2013 comes out with 4.4 kitkat then I will be selling my Nexus 7 2013,

I don’t understand why people are still complaining about the Nexus 7 2013 not have the OTA yet. Just do a manual install. And its also available for the Nexus 4. Learn how to sideload. Its not that difficult.

    • Muffy

      11/23/2013 at 4:40 pm

I know how to sideload. I’ve done it with quite a few apps. But sideloading an entire operating system is another thing. Mess up sideloading of an app, you can delete it and start again. Mess up sideloading an entire operating system, what do you do then?

I was searching to see if anyone else was annoyed by the changes in KitKat, but it seems all this article was about is people being impatient. Having to wait for an unnessecary update isn’t the end of the world. I was trying to find out if anyone else has issues with the annoying new system sounds which are a weird kind of popping. And with the bar at the top moving down in fullscreen aps which gets in the way of gameplay and zooming in and out. The keyboard has also gone crazy and suggests stupid replacements for words when previously it was spot on. Got English UK turned on as a language and yet it autocorrects to US English for words like colour. Have to carefully check even more now that what is typed turns out to be what you actually typed! It also seems that keys extend beyond their visible space on the screen. So typing the letter a will sometimes highlight the a as if its been tapped, but Z appears onscreen instead. Never had this issue with the previous keyboard set up prior to kitkat’s release.

I have read that KitKat really messes up the e-mail for anyone using an Exchange server. I can’t verify this, because I don’t have KitKat yet (no, it isn’t the end of the world, but it was promised almost two weeks ago). I do have an Exchange server for my work e-mail, so if KitKat ever comes through, I’ll be able to check out the rumor.

Just received the 4.4 update on my nexus 7 2012. It was about 153mb file. It included quickoffice and a new settings icon. Other than that I think most of the update is really under the hood. My nexus 7 is definitely faster, I think boot up time is about the same or a little longer. Gone is the X and Nexus splash screen , which I liked. Other wise the update is fine. Enjoy

    DO NOT INSTALL!!!

Seems pretty buggy. Video frame rate seems to have dropped from say 30 to 15, making it look very jittery. Simple copies of photos crash. ARG!

    I wish I hadn’t installed it.

I got my Nexus 7 update and for the most part it is ok. They have now done something to mess up the email program however. I now have random and unwanted file folders stuck at the top that I haven’t used in years. They also seem to be following the useless GMail update with big clunky email letter icons. Really? Didn’t Google hear enough bad thing about this in Gmail?

I got the update today and HATE what it has done to the email. How do I get rid of it????

What’s wrong with Google – just updating stuff without any warning that it changes functionality. They’re just pushing what they want. I cant even watch sideloaded flash video any more on my Nexus 7. I want to and it’s not for the idiots at google to take it away because they decided to.
