Nokia Lumia 1520 Buyers Seeing Delays at Microsoft and AT&T Stores

Users who were waiting for their pre-ordered Nokia Lumia 1520 to arrive received some pretty upsetting news last night. They’ll have to wait a bit longer to get their hands on Nokia’s first phablet-sized Windows Phone.

Reports of delays first surfaced last night after WPCentral reported that members of its community had received notices from users who’d pre-ordered the Lumia 1520 ahead of today’s release. According to those notices some users who pre-ordered with AT&T Wireless, the device’s exclusive American carrier, and the Microsoft Store will have to wait to get their hands on the device for an unspecified amount of time.

For what it’s worth, a message purported to be from AT&T indicated that the delays were being caused “by overwhelming demand,” and that the carrier would email them again when their Lumia 1520 is finally ready to ship. One of the users who received a delay notification said that AT&T told them to expect the Lumia 1520 sometime “on or before” December 2.

While AT&T is only sharing news of the delay with users, these same reports indicate that Microsoft is using the delay as an opportunity to ingratiate itself with customers and apologize for the wait. Users who ordered a Lumia 1520 from the Microsoft Store, reportedly, received a $25 discount coupon for later purchases.

What’s interesting here is that AT&T and Microsoft would have a problem delivering pre-orders at all. Usually, Nokia’s Windows Phones sell relatively well in other countries, however the company has yet to release a breakout hit in the United States. It’s possible that embracing current smartphone trends, like faster processors and gigantic displays, attracted more users to the device than originally planned. Of course, it’s also possible that Nokia simply expected weaker demand.

The Lumia 1520 features a quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor, 2GB of RAM, a 6-inch display and a 20 megapixel rear-facing camera that uses Nokia’s PureView imaging technology. The device will cost users $199 with a two-year service agreement once it’s back in stock.
