Nokia, Motorola & Samsung Beat iPhone 5 to Launch, But Can They Ship?

Published

September is shaping up to be a very busy month for mobile electronics announcements, but it might not be a busy month for consumer wallets.

Nokia, Motorola and Amazon are planning are planning major product launches, and Samsung already announced the Galaxy Note 2 in Germany.

While these companies are beating the iPhone 5 announcement by a week, they will likely miss the iPhone 5 release date by weeks or months.

At event after event, Apple shows us they know how to ship products. Not only does the company set the standard for product announcements, but they are ready and willing to take customer money almost as soon as the event ends.

Even when competitors pick the announcement dates for their new phones and tablets, consumers don’t often have a chance to buy them right away.

Samsung Galaxy Note 2 Release Date

The Samsung Galaxy Note 2 should arrive in late 2012.

Samsung beat everyone out of the gate with the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 launch event, and while Samsung’s timing was limited by IFA, we still don’t know when consumers can buy the Galaxy Note 2.

Despite everything Samsung announced, the only Galaxy Note 2 release date we know is that it will arrive in Europe in October and by the end of 2012 in the U.S. That’s a far cry from the expected September 21st iPhone 5 release date.

Nokia Lumia 920 Release Date

On September 5th Nokia and Microsoft will take the stage in New York to announce the new face of Windows Phone 8 from Nokia.

This will likely include the Nokia Lumia 920 and Lumia 820. These devices should arrive on AT&T and T-Mobile, before eventually landing on Verizon.

No matter how much customers want to buy a WIndows Phone 8 device, and they might not be that excited, the iPhone will be on sale for at least a month before the Nokia Lumia 920 arrives.

Motorola Droid RAZR HD Release Date

Is this not the Droid RAZR HD? We’ll find out September 5th.

Later in the day on September 5th Motorola and Verizon Wireless will take the stage to unwrap new phones which likely include the Motorola Droid RAZR HD and the Motorola Droid M.

The Droid RAZR HD looks like a worthy iPhone 5 competitor, but its release date isn’t likely going to arrive until at least October, and maybe as late as November.

Now I hope Verizon and Motorola are able to promise a faster release, but I’m not holding my breath that either of these phones will ship before the iPhone 5 release date.

Can They Ship?

The problem with so many promising iPhone alternatives, and one that looks like it will continue to plague the current crop of iPhone 5 alternatives is that by the time they reach the market millions of new iPhone contracts are already signed and new Android phones are tempting users.

In the case of these September announcements, if a phone isn’t available to buy many Android fans will already be looking for the new Nexus smartphone in December or waiting to see what CES 2012 in January brings to the table.

Samsung has clearly taken the lead in mobile hardware development, Apple is going to have to do alot more than the typical revamping of the iphone to not get left in the dust. I can’t imagine Apple has managed to improve the iphone enough to be comparable to the new samsung phone.

I do hope Samsung keeps the lead, maybe then apple will reconsider their position on flash too, jerks.

Why is it that everyone has to be “iphone alternative” ?
With a market that is clearly dominated by android in the smartphone domain, one should think that in reality it’s Apple that is playing catching up
