OnePlus is slowly becoming a household name due to having impressive top-tier phones that take on Samsung and Apple. The new OnePlus 5 kicks that up a notch, by matching the Galaxy S8 specs and Apple’s iPhone 7 Plus dual rear cameras at the same time.

Each buyer has different wants and needs. Some are looking for a big beautiful screen like the Galaxy S8, while others prefer stock Android and a great camera experience. These are two of the best phones on the market in those categories, although each has a few pros and cons.

A big part of your buying decision will be what you need and how much you can afford. That’s also what makes the OnePlus 5 special. It’s a no-compromises smartphone with all the bells and whistles for only $479. You’ll have to decide if some of the extra Galaxy S8 features are worth the nearly $300 price increase.

OnePlus 5 vs Galaxy S8: Display

First things first, the biggest deciding factor between these two phones is the display. OnePlus managed to match or beat Samsung across the board, except for the screen. This alone could be why you buy the Galaxy S8 instead of something else.  Samsung's Galaxy S8 has a large 5.8-inch Quad-HD AMOLED display that curves off both sides of the screen. Then, Samsung slimmed down the black bars of bezels on the top and bottom and removed the front-facing fingerprint scanner. This gave them more room for a bigger screen without making the phone physically large.  It's a stunning design that delivers tons of screen real estate. It's also long and skinny which some might not prefer.  The OnePlus 5 comes with a 5.5-inch 1080p HD AMOLED display. This screen isn't quite as big, and there are still bezels on the top, bottom, and sides similar to most phones on the market. The screen is smaller and has a lower resolution. That being said, 1080p is the default resolution of the Galaxy S8, so both should look great while watching a video or using apps and games.  Basically, it comes down to a personal preference. If you want a bigger screen and like the idea of a curved display, the Galaxy S8 is a great choice. If not, the OnePlus 5 is a very similar experience with a more traditional 5.5-inch flat screen we're all used to.
