OnLive Universal Controller Support for Nexus 7 In the Works

Published

on

The Nexus 7 packs in a powerful Tegra 3 Quad core processor perfect for playing beautiful looking action games, but the lack of a controller can ruin the experience.

Thankfully the OnLive Universal Controller should soon support the Nexus 7 tablet.

OnLive support responded to our question about using the OnLive Universal control with the Nexus 7 stating, ” We don’t have support out for it yet, but we hope to shortly.”

There’s no definitive date, but I’ll be testing out the current version of the OnLive app and the OnLive Universal Controller as soon as my Nexus 7 arrives this week. In the past, the controller worked for some games before the official support was announced.

Onlive Universal Game Controller

Play console games on the tablet with OnLive and the Onlive Universal Controller.

The OnLive Universal Controller is a $50 controller that connects to Android tablets and phones allowing user to play games on the OnLive gaming service.

This service streams the game over a WiFi connection, delivering an amazing gaming experience including titles otherwise only found on consoles and computers.

Some of the popular OnLive games include;

  • Homefront
  • Civilization V
  • Assasin’s Creed Revelations
  • Dirt 3
  • Batman: Arkham City
  • Saint’s Row: The Third

These games are the PC versions, not watered down Android titles. The heavy lifting is done remotely, and so long as there is a good Internet connection the game runs well in our experience.

Users can buy the OnLive game once and play it on their tablet, the MicroConsole and a Mac or PC, offering quite a bit of value.

Some users have also figured out how to use the OnLive Universal Controller with Tegra Zone games and GTA III, though this requires users root their tablet.

Its also worth noting Android 4.0 and up does support USB connectivity via dongle converters so theoretically you could connect a USB controller with an adapter.
