Pictures and Specs of OQO’s Model 2+

IMG_0032 I just did an interview with OQO‘s Bob Rosin and am uploading the video now. Stay tuned for that. Meanwhile, keep reading for more on the new OQO Model 2+ = pics, specs, and pricing. Can you say $999 and super crisp / sharp?

Folks, the Model 2+ is a HUGE improvement over the Model 02: a beautiful and crisp OLED display which looks fantastic from every angle; greatly reduced fan noise — I never heard it during our interview and we were playing h.264 video; 2GB of RAM; an Intel Atom 1.86 Z540 processor, and reduced pricing. For those concerned with the OLED screen maintaining its brightness over time, they shouldn’t be: after 3 years running 10 hours a day, it will still have retained 80% of its’ original brightness. The Model 2+ touch screen is a passive digitizer, and no longer active. Due to the touch screen, there is also a bezel present, which was not there on the Model 02. All of the existing accessories from the Model 02 ( battery, dock, etc) are compatible with the Model 2+.  Stay tuned for an interview and hands-on with the OQO Model 2+

The Model 2+ is available for ordering now and shipping in May.

OQO has also responded to the market with a much improved pricing model

No active digitizer means no way for me.

I guess it must be a matter of economies of scale. Apple charges a $500 or $600 to upgrade their laptops to a 128GB SSD (as opposed to OQO’s $700 to upgrade to a 64 GB SSD). However, this new product line is definitely more affordable then their old one. The model with the 64GB SSD used to be $3000. $2200 is definitely an improvement.

More computational power, quieter operation, and longer battery life are all good things though. It sounds like they’ve address many of the objections people have raised over the past two years. Given the clamor for a touch screen, I suspect lots of people are happy about that too. (I’ve never really understood this given that neither XP nor Vista have UIs intended for touch.)

I am a bit sad about the lack of an active digitizer. (I was hoping for, but not expecting, a dual mode.) However, given the relatively small screen, and the bezel, I’m hoping that the inking experience will be at least adequate. i.e., the Newton had about the same size screen and a bezel and it was all about inking. However, the Newton also had a decidedly hard touchscreen. OTOH, it’s not like I ever managed to put my palm on it when I was writing. I’d feel better about buying one if I could try it out first though.

Given that the organic dyes have in the past had different lifespans, the issue is not the brightness of the screen over time, but the color shift due to different dyes decomposing at different rates. Has OQO mentioned anything about possible color shifts of the display over time?

Andy – I believe Bob mentioned color shift in addition to the brightness over that 3 year / 10 hour a day period

Rob are you going to get the OQO?

Everything seems just about perfect. Personally I wished they retained the active digitizer display.

The decision for me whether I would purchase this new OQO would rely on the fact that the amount of failures expected would fall. Mine broke twice, once after a month of having it and another in a week after having it back from repairs. I sold it after that. Hopefully the new OQO won’t have such high failure rates.

they will be getting me an eval unit to use for a few days – don’t know about timing yet, though.

BTW, it just occurred to me that OQO probably uses 1.8″ drives. If the Mac laptops use 2.5″ drives, then that could account for the big difference in upgrade cost to go to a SSD.

No active digitizer? No interest. Too bad.

With Mac OS X inside will be perfect!

Do you have more details about the hardware support for h.264? For example, will all apps (such as VLC) be able to take advantage of it or is it a hidden API?

@joe – it is built-in to the hardware
