Pixel 4 vs Pixel 4 XL: What You Need to Know

If you’re looking for a new Android phone you have several options as 2019 winds down. And now, Google’s new Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL are two more great choices. With that in mind, here’s everything you need to know about both, and how they compare for potential buyers.

Like a lot of the competition, Google’s two phones come in different sizes but with the same features. That means you’re getting the same great screen, the same powerful cameras, and won’t miss out on anything if you prefer a smaller device. With the October 22nd release date near, here’s why you should choose the Pixel 4 XL.

When it comes to fast, stock Android the Pixel 4 or 4 XL are basically your only option, and they’ll come with Android 10. Well, that or something like the OnePlus 7 Pro or last years Pixel 3. Google has slowly developed a cult following of people that love its Pixel devices. Both of Google’s new phones are similar to last year, but there are some important differences that will swing you towards one or the other. And even more so if you’re coming from an old Pixel 2.

On October 15th, Google announced both of these phones after months of leaks, news and rumors. We didn’t get a 3rd model or anything with 5G, but both Pixel 4’s are pretty special. Especially in the camera and screen department. What this all boils down to is that between what’s available now and what’s coming, you’ll have your choice of screen sizes, specs and price when you get a new phone.

Here’s everything we know about both of Google’s new phones, and a comparison in our slideshow below. That way you can decide which one to buy, or to choose something else entirely.

Pixel 4 vs Pixel 4 XL: Display

Pixel 4 vs Pixel 4 XL: Display

The first and primary aspect of any smartphone is the display size and quality. That's just the bottom line. It's a very important part of the decision, and it'll be a big one for the Pixel.

  • Pixel 4: 5.7-inch display (90 Hz 1080p)
  • Pixel 4 XL: 6.3-inch display (90 Hz Quad-HD)

If you think those are a little small, you're not alone. These days almost every other manufacturer is going bigger, including Samsung and Apple. The OnePlus 7 Pro is 6.7-inches, the Note 10 is 6.8-inches.

Google is sticking to the sizes they think are best. The Pixel 4 will be small and compact, and basically the same size as an S10 or the iPhone 11 Pro. All while the 4 XL will be bigger, but not too big.

As for bezels or a notch, they removed the bottom and side bezels completely and kept the bezel at the top for the cameras. There won't be a notch like the Pixel 3 XL, and Google didn't cut a hole in the screen for the cameras like the Galaxy S10 either. Instead, it has a traditional "forehead" at the top for all the sensors and special features. It doesn't look as fancy as the OnePlus 7 Pro, but it'll still be great.

Then, that 90 Hz display is something that a lot of people will really enjoy, and it could be the deciding factor on a Pixel over something else. Just keep in mind that only the bigger Pixel will be Quad-HD. Either way, they'll both look great when you're enjoying Android 10

It most likely will, just like all the other high-end new phones.

At 8 GB for the XL, of pre-order! At 6gb, wait for the sale – no use spending for meh specs.

2GB of RAM more will make zero difference. My Note 9 still hasn’t used more than 4GB and it has a lot more than that.

Well, something is wrong with Google’s memory management. Even after all the attempts to fix it.

Yeah I don’t know what you ram fanbois are doing with your phones but as a power user.. I’ve never once maxed my Pixel 3 to the point where it was lagging and I wished for more ram.. sounds to me like you’re falling into the marketing trap, and OEMs are not going to complain about that

I’m still packing the OG Pixel XL. Waiting for the 4XL. Great phone, superb customer service. I had one issue and had a chat with a Google rep, who walked me thru the fix. Great camera too, especially the incredible ‘night sight’.
