PS4 Backwards Compatibility Explained

Published

on

.Having to keep your old hardware around to play your favorite games is always a sore spot for gamers. PS4 users don’t have to. They can enjoy some classic titles from the PS2 and PS3 through Sony’s own makeshift PS4 Backwards Compatibility features.

The PS4 doesn’t explicitly have a backwards compatibility program at all. At least, not in the same sense as we’re used to seeing from other consoles like the Xbox One and Wii U. Old video games are available for gamers to purchase through the PlayStation Store. Those that aren’t available for sale are a part of the console’s game streaming service, PlayStation Now.

Here’s what you need to know about these two features so that you can enjoy old games on your PS4 as if there is a formal PS4 Backwards Compatibility program.

PS4 Backwards Compatibility: Sony PlayStation Now

There’s no PS4 Backwards Compatibility program, but at least we know why. Sony was up front about its plans for old games at the console’s launch. Instead of adding hardware inside the PS4 to allow it to play old games, the company created PlayStation Now.

Read: PlayStation Now Subscriptions: 5 Things You Need to Know

PlayStation Now is a streaming service that allows you to purchase access to games without purchasing the game itself. Sony’s servers and your high-speed internet connection handle all the heavy lifting. There are no discs involved. You don’t even have to get off the couch to purchase your favorite older games in store. Your PS4 becomes a streaming box that relays footage from PlayStation Network to your television set.

PlayStation Now costs money. That’s why it’s not as well-known as Microsoft’s Xbox Backwards Compatibility Program. It’s not included with a PlayStation Plus subscription at all. The service has hourly, daily and monthly rental rates per game. To get the most out of it, gamers should try the $20 monthly payment option that gets them access to lots of games.

PS4 Backwards Compatibility: PS2 Emulator for PS4

A PS2 emulator introduced after PS4 launched offers gamers a way to play some classic games on their console. Because there’s an emulator involved, there’s no need for a constant internet connection like there is with PlayStation Now. More importantly, you don’t have to keep paying for access to these PS2 games. Once you buy them, they are yours to keep and play for as long as you want.

Unfortunately, you don’t get access to these games without spending any money at all. They start at $9.99 through the PlayStation Store. Even if you own a physical copy of the game already, you’ll need to buy the PS4 compatible version again. These games have received some upgrades. They support high-definition displays, Share Play, streaming over Twitch, Trophies and Remote Play.

PS4 Backwards Compatibility: Games on the PS4 with PlayStation Now Subscription

These games are available for streaming when users have a PlayStation Now subscription. Sony works with publishers to expand this line-up of games regularly.

I am thinking about buying a new console. Your article convinced me that i should buy an Xbox One. Sony does it again trying to get money from you for games that you already own !

I suggest you to build your own Gaming PC instead of buying an other crap. Consoles are full of crap all the time you need to buy a DVD of a newly released game. I personally switched to the Gaming PC from Xbox One, Check the details here:

I’ll continue playing my PS2 and PS3 games on my 1st generation PS3’s ( i have my original 60GB full backward compatible model and one another 60GB I picked up at GameStop for $129 2 years ago.) I would have already bought a PS4 if they had included software backward compatibility for PS3/PS2/PS1 games. The 2nd generation cost reduced PS’3 did it that way for FREE, so why make you buy it again for use on a PS4? I was angry when the 3rd generation Slim PS3 got rid of backward compatibility, I never thought they would be so dumb as to do that again on the PS4.
My next console will be an XBox now. Sony has given me no reason to stay loyal to them, No real backward compatibility and no free online play = no reason to buy a PS4 instead of an XBox One.

Sony you are going the wrong way. Your fans where with you because you where with us,consumer friendly and we loved you for that. We want backward compatibility, don’t be money hungry like you know who.

I bought a PS4 a year ago. My PS3 died long time ago and now I have a large collection of PS3 games waiting for nothing. I really want to play my games again, but unfortunately I can’t. PS now! Ha, they are very smart, more money for them. I will not pay more money for them. My worst mistake was to buy a PS4.

Well, Alex, i can’t blame you there. The architecture was specifically for the PS4 and nothing else. Plus it has no support for CD playback. And also…. you gotta have really good internet to play the games from the PS Now and my internet sucks. So I can’t use PS Now.

RIDICULOUS. If Microsoft can make an Xbox 360 emulator for its new system, and provide it free-of-charge, then Sony should be able to make a PS3 emulator for its new system. These systems are not that different from one another (AMD APUs).

The REAL reason Sony does not provide a free emulator is because they see a giant opportunity to make an extra $5 per old game. Like a politician, they want to suck more money from your wallet

I agree totally I have a very large collection pf PS3 games and now have to keep my original console to play them on. I “was” a very loyal fan of PlayStation and also own the first generation, backward compatible, PS3. They are definitely losing me as a customer. I will be purchasing a Xbox 1s now. I still have to replace my favorite games if I want to play them on the Xbox. I do have many games that are on the list of compatible games for the Xbox. But my favorite games I only have for the PS3. Bottom-line I also agree that Sony is just doing this to be greedy as if the games and console weren’t expensive enough as is. It is 100% BS, bye-bye Sony, hello Microsoft. Just my 2 cents worth.

If a major company like Adobe can be backward compatible then no other company can have a reason not to be. It makes no sense to have a product that will never use the games that made it popular. If you want to build a customer base that will stay with you for life then backward compatible consoles are the way to go. No hidden charges or catches. If a game is so popular then re-release it with up grades to take advantage of the newer graphics ect. Being able to put any game from earlier versions into the new console and then play them makes perfect sense and keeps the customer base happy and committed to buying your consoles in the future. All consoles eventually break and die, but with the backward compatible guarantee for life your customers will always buy your consoles. If you want to make a lot of money this approach makes sense. If you are short sighted and greedy then I look forward to your demise as a company. Customers want a partnership with companies they can trust, break that trust at your peril, once the customer decides that the SONY brand name means nothing all your products will be avoided. Soon you will be bankrupt and out of a job. Congratulations on your stupidity.

Because companies like Sony put up road blocks and act like bandits we have the moral obligation to break through their DRM systems for our friends and family! All their walled content is to be scattered to the winds free to be enjoyed by all good citizens. Enjoy emulation on PC’s and Mobile devices!

yes PS4 might not be able to support backward compatibility and isn’t exactly built for it, that’s fair enough, BUT Microsoft announced they where doing backwards compatibility and had discussions with Sony regarding this, this was before the PS4 Slim and the PS4 PRO was released. so Sony then turn around and say “no we will not be making our console backward compatibility” “It would need a big investment” “it would also take time to do”. yes they statements are correct it would involve rebuilding the console to work like that, yes it would take money to make it work, yes it would take time, BUT for a company that’s worth 72.3 Billion im sure taking a very small hit on money and time to make something that fans of sony are asking for is worth It would you not say?. its not as if we are asking for a brand new console 3 years early from the normal 6 years release dates, we are asking to go back and play our favourite games from back in the day, like Call of duty Black Ops 2, theres a fan favourite game right there. this is a massive selling point in the gaming community, its going to lead sony to having a lot of losses, wouldn’t say bankrupt like some of the people on here, the have a good few successful revenues including phones, TV’s , speakers etc. they wouldn’t go down but they would take a massive loss and that’s something they need to take in to account, don’t get me started on PlayStation now, that is a joke, we pay for a console, we pay for a subscription to play online (ps plus, which is fair enough if you look at the pros to the cons) then they have the cheek to ask us to pay for an service that in my eyes is s**t, there really taking the piss with it and they need to listen to the fans, the fans that actually made there business so big and successful and not try and take more money!
