Buy Instead of an iMac

Buy Instead of an iMac

If you don't need a MacBook of some kind, you only had two real options until today. You could buy a Mac Pro that is due for an update, or you could buy an iMac. The iMac is the more likely option, but it starts at $1,099.

Now you can bring your own monitor(s) keyboard and mouse and avoid spending $300 on a 1080P display that comes with the entry-level iMac. You can get an amazing third-party display for under $200, so this is a nice option instead of buying an iMac.

You also get a lot of power, but unfortunately you don't gain tons of  upgradability. You will be able to upgrade the RAM, but it's not clear if you will be able to upgrade any other parts after you buy it.

I think it is only appropriate here to give credit where it is due, remembering that with this new iPad, Apple has invented the magnet.

    Previously, magnets simply weren’t necessary

I’m very tempted by the new Mac Mini, for use with Xcode. The performance looks good, but the price is making me hesitate. I don’t like the keyboards on the new MacBook Air or MacBook Pro, so I suppose it’s either this new Mac Mini, an iMac, or an older laptop. It’s also hard to choose which CPU and the amount of storage to go for…

The mac mini is nice for people who don’t need GPU, but if you add an eGPU it gets very close to imac where you also get a much better screen than the one you have. I’ll just wait for the next iMAC, I hope it will have 256GB SSD as base option and the same i5 as the mini (or close).
