8 Reasons to Wait for the LG G8 & 6 Reasons Not to
In this guide we’ll take you through everything we know so far about the LG G8 ThinQ and if it’s worth waiting for. Buyers have plenty of great phones to choose from right now and more are coming in the next few months. Devices like the Google Pixel 3 XL, the LG V40, or even the new Galaxy S10. However, LG fans will want to wait for the LG G8 launch.
Phones changed a lot last year. Screens are huge, bezels are small, cameras are in the screen, and technology is vastly improving. LG aims to continue that with groundbreaking new tech in the G8.
For starters, the Galaxy S10 launch is almost here, Apple iPhone 11 rumors are swirling already, a new OnePlus 7 is coming, there’s the Pixel 4, and we’re already seeing some big changes from LG ahead of the LG G8 release. Here’s what you need to know.

As you probably guessed, LG is already working on a brand new G8 for 2019. And while the phone is probably still a month or two away, we’re already starting to hear talk of a 4K screen, tear-drop notch, more cameras or a 3D camera, and other rumors. Plus, LG recently confirmed the front-facing ToF camera array and confirmed the entire screen will act as one big speaker. Yes, the screen is the speaker.
Unfortunately, a recent leak suggests the LG G8 won’t stand a chance against the Galaxy S10 and will be very similar to the G7 and V40 last year. As in — missing most of the tech we expected in 2019. At the same time, LG just confirmed the launch event and already starting hyping up some neat new technology.
According to the popular leakster @UniverseIce LG is planning a beautiful new 4K display for the LG G8. Based on the image above, that might be the only substantial upgrade. We expected a bezel-free screen with a tiny notch, cutouts for the camera, or in-display fingerprint scanners. This suggests NONE of that.
Keep in mind that LG’s phone does have substantial upgrades, just not where most users expected. We’re getting better performance, a bigger screen, iPhone X-style ToF sensors for Face-ID, and a groundbreaking new Crystal Sound on OLED speaker panel. Meaning sound will come out and from the screen, along with the regular speaker. Making the best sounding smartphone even better.
Plus, LG recently put the “turnaround expert” from its highly successful TV division in charge of mobile, so people should prepare for LG to change things up in 2019. It might take a few months, but expect something different with this phone and the LG V50 later this year.
Either way, there are some very tempting phones available right now, and in this guide we’ll take you through the best reasons to wait for LG’s G8 ThinQ or why you shouldn’t wait and look elsewhere today.

The big LG V40 and its five cameras is nothing to shrug off. It's a highly capable phone and likely the best device we've ever seen from LG. It offers excellent performance, a huge vibrant display, double the storage, and a trio of high-end cameras on the back, not to mention two more up front. It's a great phone anyone would love, even with the large notch in the screen, but some of you might want to hold off for what's coming next. We don't have a full spec sheet yet, but you can expect the company to make significant upgrades that follows the path of Samsung, Apple, OnePlus and more. They already beat Samsung to the market with five cameras, so now they just gotta match them with the screen. The G8 could be a bigger, better, smarter, faster LG V40. We might get an even bigger screen with no notch, or maybe a tiny "water-drop" notch like the OnePlus 6T. We don't expect LG to cut a hole in the screen for the front camera like the Galaxy S10. If you hate the cutout idea, the G8 and its teardrop notch might be perfect. Or, if you're ok with the notch, it might just stick with that design, too. We'll get a new processor (Snapdragon 855) with improved performance and gaming, better battery life, Android 9 Pie, and great speakers. Although, a new leak suggests LG could ditch the boomsound speaker for a new "sound on display" technology. If you aren't thrilled with the LG G7 or V40 design, like me, just know that something better could be coming this year. There's no way things stay the same, especially with what we're seeing from the rest of the competition. Great article, so thanks! My Wish for LG is that they keep the high-end audio/speakers and DAC, and then bump that storage amount up to 128GB or higher. That and a better battery. I have a G5 and it’s a lemon, since I love good audio I’m definitely sticking with LG.

It’s definitely a lemon. It was also before it’s time in many ways. I keep buying new batteries. What’s nice is you can charge extras on a cradle, then pop them in if you need to. This has been a lifesaver at times, especially in long runs.

Also a G5 owner, having owned the G3 prior. My hope is they continue leading or regain lost ground with camera superiority. I thought the original iPhone plus had LG camera hardware. Funny you could find multiple sources eluding to this till it was out for a while. My biggest complaint is the GPS has been buggy on all of my G series phones by LG. My G5’s GPS recently stopped working entirely. I did love using my phone to control my LG flatscreen. I’m holding out for the next release, knowing current releases include 600mhz (tmobile spec), and hoping there’s no notch. It’s like buying the cheap ticket to a game. View obstructed. Bad idea.
