Should I wait for the Nintendo Switch 2 or buy the Nintendo Switch now? This is a question I am hearing more and more as rumors of a 2019 Nintendo Switch release heat up and a Switch Mini or Switch S style upgrade pick up steam.

For most gamers it is too early to start waiting for the Nintendo Switch 2. While there is a 2019 Nintendo Switch release date rumored, you can expect to wait much longer for a full on Nintendo Switch 2 release date.

I’ll walk you through what you need to know about waiting for the Nintendo Switch 2, and why it may make sense to buy the Nintendo Switch now instead of sitting on your hands and waiting.

Reasons to Wait for the Nintendo Switch 2

Should you wait for the Nintendo Switch 2?

Should you wait for the Nintendo Switch 2?

While there are some good reasons to wait, there are plenty of reasons to buy the current Switch console. You can easily get suckered into waiting for the next big thing over and over again, and sometimes it makes sense to wait, but for most gamers it’s not to that point yet.

Here are the reasons to wait for the Nintendo Switch 2;

  • Wait for New Nintendo Switch 2 Features
  • Wait for a Cheaper Nintendo Switch
  • Wait for a 2019 Nintendo Switch Performance Model
  • Wait If You Already Do a Lot of iPad Gaming

And here are the reasons not to wait for the Nintendo Switch 2;

  • Don’t Wait for a Full on Nintendo Switch Upgrade in 2019
  • Don’t Wait If You Find a Great Deal
  • Don’t Wait for Nintendo Switch 2 Exclusive Games Yet

We are hearing increased rumors of a 2019 Nintendo Switch release, but it may not be a full on Nintendo Switch 2.

Nintendo Switch 2 Rumors

There are rumors of two new Nintendo Switch 2 releases for 2019. One of the models is reportedly a cheaper Nintendo Switch and the other is a performance model. Couple this with the Nintendo E3 2019 website going live and additional leaks and it looks like there is a good chance that we will see a new Nintendo Switch this year.

While both models will be new, they may not launch with the Nintendo Switch 2 name, and may be more along the lines of what we saw from the Xbox One S and the Xbox One X approach.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Nintendo is working on a performance enhanced Nintendo Switch for 2019 that appeals more to the hardcore gamer than to the core Switch demographic. While you shouldn’t expect the same power as the PS4 Pro or the Xbox One X, it is that demographic that Nintendo is going after.

The other model is reportedly a cheaper Nintendo Switch priced around $199. This may be a dockless Nintendo Switch with Joy Cons that don’t come off. This would limit it to handheld play only and would remove two player options. Think of something along the lines of how Nintendo made many cheaper Nintendo handheld models with the 2DS. Michael Pachter told Games Industry, ” expect the device to have the same screen, but with Joy Cons built into the body and no docking station. Since it can’t “switch” from handheld to console, it’s hard to guess what they will call it, but let’s assume Game Boy (kidding).”

A report on Bloomberg focuses in on information from Citigroup analysts that expect to see a new version in 2019.

If Nintendo delivers a cheaper Switch or a 2019 Nintendo Switch upgrade as some of the rumors suggest, expect to see it closer to the holiday season in 2019. That’s a lengthy wait if you don’t have a gaming system or a portable gaming solution already. The potential cheaper Nintendo Switch price is $199, it’s not clear what the Switch 2 price will be or what the performance model will cost.

With this in mind, this is what you should wait for the Nintendo Switch 2 and why you should go ahead and buy a Nintendo Switch in 2019.

Wait for New Nintendo Switch 2 Features

Wait for New Nintendo Switch 2 Features

One of the biggest reasons to wait is for new Nintendo Switch 2 features and upgrades. If you are looking at a cheaper Switch, the upgrades will likely by design wise and could be a smaller overall unit, potentially with a smaller screen. If you are interested in this model, you can expect a focus on portability and home gaming, not on massively upgraded specs and new features.

Gamers looking for a full on Nintendo Switch 2 update may need to wait longer, but you will likely get bigger upgrades. The rumored features include more power, more RAM and a focus on performance gaming. These are all standard features on the top of the line PS4 Pro and Xbox One X, but still not standard gaming features on the entry level models from Nintendo’s competition. Rumors suggest the performance model will not match the power of the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X.

We don’t know if the Nintendo Switch 2 screen size will get a boost to add more real estate when mobile, but it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the resolution bumped up to 1080P on mobile and then support 4K gaming when docked.

If you are hoping for a major upgrade, you may need to wait longer, but it is one of the biggest reasons to wait.

    “…might not be a full on Nintendo Switch 2.”

    Might not? MIGHT NOT? ARE YOU KIDDING ME? There is a ZERO percent chance we’re getting a Nintendo Switch 2 this year. Or next. Or the year after. There aren’t even REAL rumblings of a slight revision. And when there is a revision, you better believe it’ll be form factor, battery life, etc. It’s not going to be a new system that can play new games. There’s virtually no reason to wait if you WANT a Nintendo Switch. Obviously if you DON’T want it, then there’s no reason to get it.

    Nintendo isn’t going to make a Nintendo Switch 2 for four to six years. So if anyone is actually waiting because they think there’s a Switch 2 in the way and this article isn’t COMPLETELY click bait nonsense, do yourself a favor and just get one.
