Samsung Epic 4G Touch Ice Cream Sandwich Update Rolling Out Today

Published

on

As expected, the Samsung Epic 4G Touch Ice Cream Sandwich update will roll out to owners of Sprint’s Galaxy S II variant starting today.

Sprint has confirmed the good news on its website saying that the ICS update will be pushed to Epic 4G Touch owners starting today, July 12th, and that all users should receive the update within the month of July.

The Epic 4G Touch ICS update rolls out today.

We’ve heard that the roll out will be completed by July 20th but it’s unclear if that date is going to stick, especially now that Sprint did not provide a specific end date.

Owners of the Epic 4G Touch will be prompted to download and install the Ice Cream Sandwich update, a process that should take some time considering how big the update is.

Sprint has detailed what is coming along with the update and here is what Epic 4G Touch owners should look forward to from Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich:

  • A refined, evolved user interface that is simple, beautiful and useful
  • Face Unlock: use state-of-the-art facial recognition technology to unlock your phone with a smile
  • Redesigned camera which introduces panorama mode, effects like silly faces and background replacement, and a powerful photo editor
  • Android Beam™: quickly share web pages, apps, contacts and YouTube™ videos with your friends by simply tapping two Near Field Communication (NFC)-enabled phones together
  • Web browser now lets you sync Google Chrome™ bookmarks, request full desktop versions of sites, see your open tabs in a new layout and even store web pages for offline reading
  • People: browse friends, family and coworkers, see their photos in high-resolution and check their latest status updates from Google+
  • Improved keyboard with incredibly accurate typing, an inline spell checker and improved copy and paste support
  • New Calendar app that lets you add events quickly, sync with Google Calendar™ or Microsoft Exchange and even pinch to adjust your calendar display
  • Redesigned Gmail™ app that now lets you swipe between conversations to catch up quickly, and search for emails even without a data connection
  • Google+ integration that lets you hangout and video chat with up to 10 friends using your front-facing camera

While not listed, we fully expect Sprint to include bug fixes and enhancements that should shore up issues that Epic 4G Touch owners have been experiencing before today.

So, for those that own a Galaxy S II device, the wait is finally over. Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich is here and the wait for Android 4.1 Jelly Bean begins today for some and in a couple of days for others.

Sprint’s Epic 4G Touch is the last Galaxy S II among the major carriers, including AT&T and T-Mobile, to receive the upgrade to Android 4.0.

IT’S VERY EASY TO FIX. GO TO SETTINGS – APPLICATIONS – ALL – SWYPE. CLICK “CLEAR DATA” THEN “FORCE STOP”. AFTER THIS GO BACK TO SETTINGS – LANGUAGE AND INPUT – DEFAULT. CLICK ON SWYPE AND YOU SHOULD BE GOOD TO GO

Few bugs or issues I noticed.

    1. I have 192 apps installed and it seemed that the ordering and folders are gone with the upgrade. They are sorted in alphabetical order. I used to leave the akdroid / sprint stuff on the first 3 pages and then would have folders for common utilities (e.g. networking, social media, games, etc) but all the folders were gone and I have to redo this. No way to restore the original layout.

    2. I had a lot of contacts joined to each other (since I had multiple accounts) None of them are joined and when I try to join them, there is no search area to type the name. I have to scroll through the list of contacts to join them.

    3. Email app is not the greatest. The check mark is using up space. Also there is no easy way to reload the email unless you go into the menu. If you switch from standard mode to conversational mode, all items have a drop down to view the conversation even tough there might be one email associated to that conversation.

Seem like the older app had better features then the new one.

    4. System font. Seems like the system font has decreased. The reason why I picked this phone is so I could read the screen without glasses. Now I cant read most of the stuff. I just installed an app called Big font, but that dosent help with the descriptions inside google play and other apps.

All in all, the features are good for ICS, but has some issues.

Also one more thing about the update that is the WORST THING..is that the battery drains down real bad for some reason..idk what the hell it is cuz i tried to tweak up my settings to make less ware n tare on my battery and it STILL drains..everyine alse with the update says the same thing so they are deffff gonna have to send a nother update out to fix all the dumb shit.. The face lock thing is pretty cool and also btw they SAY that the camera had been enhanced in some way but ummm NO ..it def has not

    07/21/2012 at 2:36 pm

Agree with Wesley. Battery is draining very quickly and top battery consuming process is Android OS at nearly 45% when before with gingerbread top was always the display.

Had update since day one. Disagree on battery life I actually use phone more and have noticed a great improvement on battery life. I also went from just having 3g on to Bluetooth, 4G, and GPS on all the time. Plus screen shots are still done by holding power button and home key simultaneously. Was about to upgrade phone when update came out.will wait now. All the bugs I used to complain about I have not thus far. Pleased with update.

Lucky me…NOT…it’s already the end of the month…that means the 20th was not the end date after all…anyhow..just got my notification for update this morning. Not going for it yet. My wife has the same phone and she got her’s a week ago. She was having some issue with it and had to reboot to fix. I’ll be going through the reviews, thanks in advance, to see if it’s worth the upgrade.

I went out and bought OTG Host mode USB cables for my son and I since ICS is supposed to have it on the E4GT. Forthose who don’t know, thus cable allows you to use a jump/flash drive with your phone. Sadly there does not seen to be Host mode USB included. The test software confirmed that this update is supposed to have it, but that it doesn’t work. Anyone know how to fox this???

    • Judah

      08/07/2012 at 9:52 am

I believe Sprint blocked OTG capabilities on their device. It is the only Galaxy SII that cannot use OTG host cables. They also discontinued the update, so if you haven’t got it, that’s why.

I’m at a loss as to why anyone would block OTG capabilities. They don’t lose anything by letting us use our jump drives. It’s not rooting or tethering. It’s a shame to say the least. Granted the cables weren’t expensive, but that really isn’t the point.Crippling the phone is pointless.

I hear that the updates are coming again and that a fix file for all the new problems is due out in September. I’m hoping for some good news regarding OTG.

    This update SUCKS!!!!

Watch your WiFi connections. They go to sleep in the middle of downloads, Facebook, email. You have to shtdown WiFi and go back to 3G. Sprints 4G is far and few locations.

I receieved an update today but none of the “bugs” have been resolved with WiFi.

Three delays on this thing are driving me crazy. I get delays of 10 to 30 seconds for almost every app. Some delays are longer but they usually end up force closing. Hard resetting doesn’t fix any of the issues.

My power button is no longer working so I can’t screen shot, unlock my phone or see my screen again until I plug in or take out my charger from my phone. From what I’ve read on forums I tried updating my phone as well as factory resetting it and still nothing. Is there any simple solution to this?
