Samsung Galaxy Android 5.1.1 Update: 3 New Details Emerge

Back in April Google confirmed and released the latest Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update for Nexus smartphones and tablets, and it’s slowly but surely starting to head to more devices. Most notably, devices like the Samsung Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge, and even the older Galaxy S5. This week three new Galaxy Android 5.1.1 update details emerged.

Samsung is aiming to update most of it’s latest flagship Android smartphones to the new Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update ahead of the Android M release later this year, and earlier this month they kicked things off by rolling out 5.1.1 for the T-Mobile Galaxy S6. This week, the same software upgraded is headed to three more Galaxy smartphones.

Those with the Samsung Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge, and even older devices like the Galaxy S5 have all been anxiously awaiting the Android 5.1.1 update, hoping it fixes some of the bugs and problems that arrived with the initial Android 5.0 Lollipop update. Now that Android 5.1.1 is finally headed to Galaxy owners, here’s three new details owners need to know.

Last week T-Mobile beat all other US carriers to the update, and in a surprise move began pushing out the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update for the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge with new features, bug fixes, and improved performance. That same update is now headed to one more carrier in the United States, as well as the older Galaxy S5.

The Galaxy S6 Android 5.1.1 update will feature changes to Samsung’s 16 megapixel camera, or the app. Included is RAW support and custom ISO values for the camera. It’s also expected to feature iOS-style exposures that will allow users to manage their exposure with simple on-screen controls. This is in addition to the return of Guest Mode allowing for multiple user accounts on one device, new motion effects, and more quick settings controls.

Samsung themselves still have yet to announce a release date for the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update, but it hit T-Mobile last week, and is now headed to US Cellular. Owners can expect it to eventually arrive for AT&T, Verizon, Sprint and others around the globe. Here’s the latest news.

US Cellular Galaxy S6 & S6 Edge Android 5.1.1

This afternoon, just a week after T-Mobile was first to release the latest software in the United States, US Cellular has confirmed the Android 5.1.1 update is headed to the Galaxy S6, and the Galaxy S6 Edge. The links aren’t proper changelogs detailing what’s new, but do confirm it’s rolling out starting today.

US Cellular states the update to Android 5.1.1 for both new Galaxy S6 devices is available today as an over the air update, as well as being available for manual download and installation via Samsung Kies. Owners can head into settings > about phone > and check for updates to get the latest software right now.

That said, this is a staggered rollout and will not be available for all owners right away. Instead, it will slowly arrive to make sure there’s no critical bugs, and could take upwards of one week to arrive for all users.

Galaxy S5 Android 5.1.1 Lollipop Update

In a surprising turn of events those with a T-Mobile Galaxy S5 started receiving the latest Android 5.1.1 last night, which was June 22nd. Early leaks suggested the Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge and Note 4 were first in line, then the older Galaxy S5 would be up next, likely being pushed back to late July. Instead, it arrived ahead of almost all Galaxy S6 devices, thanks to T-Mobile.

We’ve yet to hear of any other carriers in the United States even starting the testing phase for the Galaxy S5 Android 5.1.1 update, but with T-Mobile already delivering it to owners, it could be here sooner than many expected. We’re hearing a few complaints of bad battery life on Android 5.1.1 for Galaxy smartphone owners though, so update with caution.

Samsung’s Android updates are very random and typically rollout at different times for different carriers, and around the globe. US carriers have a strict testing phase which makes the rollout hard to predict. We were expecting Android 5.1.1 to hit all Galaxy S6 users before it arrived for the Galaxy S5, but that wasn’t the case. As T-Mobile started the update earlier this week.

The company’s Android 5.1.1 update is expected to hit the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 in July, but with more Galaxy S6 devices getting it this week, not to mention select Galaxy S5 units seeing it as well, a Galaxy Note 4 Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update could be here sooner than we initially thought.
