Samsung Galaxy Nexus Owners Reporting Random Reboots

Published

on

It would appear that some Samsung Galaxy Nexus owners are experiencing something that’s arguably more frustrating then the phone’s sub-par battery life. BGR is reporting, citing Google’s support forums, that Galaxy Nexus users are experiencing random reboots on their device and that right now, the cause of the curiously timed rebooting is unfortunately unknown.

Most of the complaints seem to be coming from those who own the GSM (3G) version of the Galaxy Nexus but there are reports from owners of the Verizon CDMA device as well.

The reboots have happened during all sorts of use cases including the phone being idle and during gaming sessions.

A few of us here at GBM with the Verizon model have seen random reboots with one editor suffering a reboot during a phone call at CES and another seeing it happen a couple of times during normal usage.

So it appears that Google and Samsung might actually have a little bit of a problem on their hands. Maybe not as big as the HTC ThunderBolt reboot issue but certainly one that will have to be addressed.

Google for its part has made it known that it’s aware of the problem and that it is investigating. That bodes well for those that are in need of a remedy in the not-so-distant future.

And now, we have to ask. Are any of you out there with a GSM or Verizon Galaxy Nexus experiencing random rebooting on your device?

We’ve love to hear from you and see if we can find out how widespread this issue actually is.

I bought the VZW version on launch day.  I haven’t had even one single crash or reboot.  The battery has been good too.  The only time it wasn’t was when I was using Light Flow.  Uninstalled it and battery life is good, not sub par.  I came from the OG Motorola Droid and I get nearly as much battery life as it did, even leaving 4G on all the time.

I also purchased on launch day. I had no issues until about 3 weeks ago. Since that time, I am seeing 2-3 random reboot per day. Fortunately, each has been when the phone is sitting idle. I hear the reboot sound and notice that the phone is bouncing again. Interestingly enough, I had determined to NOT root this phone and see if I could live with a stock phone. I guess that’s what I get for not messing with mother nature…

I’ve been complaining about this for weeks.  There seems to be no pattern to the random reboots.  While most people have had it happen while either using the Music app or Pandora, many people (myself included) have had it happen while it was just sitting unused on the desk next to them.

Another very common problem that, in my opinion is even worse, is the mic will cutout in the middle of a call.  You can hear the other person just fine, but they can’t hear you.  Only remedy is to hang up and call back.  It appears the voice modem is at fault, and the Galaxy Nexus has the same Via chip that the Droid Charge did….which suffered a similar problem.

I regard that as even worse because at bare minimum a smartphone should be able to operate as a phone.  All this 21st century technology is great, but it’s worthless if the 19th century technology doesn’t work.

And swapping it out for a new phone doesn’t appear to have much success.  My third phone is in the mail, because on my second phone, the mic dropped out on the second call I had.

The reboots are due to heat and the phone protecting itself. During long periods of surfing the internet on lte, or tethering I get reboots.  Not all the time maybe 5 times since I bought the phone on launch day.  But I have seen this pattern.  The lte radio really heats up the device under heavy data use. I saw this on my iphone while downloading files and my thunderbolt while using google nav while connected to the car charger. But I put up with it all because otherwise the phone is amazing. First time I’ve neglected to flash a custom rom because the os is just that smooth.

That doesn’t explain why mine rebooted when it was sitting quietly on my desk unused, and had been for at least 20 minutes.

Ok please enlighten me how that explains it.  The phone wasn’t doing anything.

And just not it rebooted on me and the phone wasn’t warm at all.

      Not due to heat.

My Verizon model has rebooted about a dozen times in the last three weeks, with no discernible pattern to the circumstances. As annoying is its habit of randomly re-locking itself immediately after I plug in the unlock pattern.

I get random reboots sometimes on my Verizon GNex. It has randomly rebooted a few times but not enough to really upset me. The only time it really pissed me off was when I was using Google Navigation and it rebooted and I didn’t know where I was going for 5 minutes…

I’ve had my phone for a couple of weeks but have mostly used it as a computer rather than a phone, and for that it’s been amazing.  But tonight I tried making some phone calls and for each of 4 calls, the phone rebooted after about 30 seconds into the call.  Very frustrating!

I just experienced a random re-boot… the phone wasn’t doing anything. Just sitting on my desk, when all of a sudden I saw the colorful flashy animation for the bootup of the phone.

I’ve had my first reboots today. The phone was plugged in while I was listening to Pandora over wifi. It happened twice in 30 minutes.

Have Verizon SGN, mine randomly rebooted 1 time yesterday, and 4 times and the day before that. Happens at least once every couple of days…

Owned since Dec 8th on Bell Mobility in Canada.  Reboots rare in first 45 days and would occur after heavy use or DL / UL of an app or trying to install an app that was not supported on ICS.  Understandable but annoying however since Jan 25, been rebooting completely randomly and generally while at idle, with nothing running.  Pulled battery for a hard reset and still rebooting.

As a follow up to this it got so bad, I did a hard reset of the phone.  It hasnt reoccurred since then.

I bought my Verizon Galaxy Nexus back in January. I have had the cycling off problem for quite some time. I would say it happens between 1-2x per month. Random. Sometimes updating an app, sometimes just playing around with the phone. I have not had any volume problems that I noticed. Don’t really see any 4G speeds even when I am in a 4G area. The 3G speeds when in my home are simply awful. A dial up modem is faster.

I like the phone but had to get the seido extended battery which still needs recharging during the day to keep at least 30% by late night 10pm.
