Samsung Galaxy Note 4: What You Need to Know Right Now

Published

on

The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 arrived on shelves in the United States in October. That means that it’s probably not going anywhere, anytime soon. That of course hasn’t stopped Samsung Galaxy Note 4 rumors from leaking to the surface ahead of time, teasing prospective buyers with tales of the future.

For much of 2013, we heard rumors about a third-generation Samsung Galaxy Note. The device, rumors said, would be coming to replace the Galaxy Note 2 and would do so with some very powerful features. As it turns out, many of those rumors were dead on as a Samsung Galaxy Note 3 did touch down in 2013 to replace the Galaxy Note 2 and it did, in fact, have some very powerful features on board.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 was first announced in September at the annual IFA trade show in Berlin, Germany. Samsung used an Unpacked event to draw attention to the device and thousands of people from all over the planet gathered to watch Samsung debut its Next Big Thing.

Samsung’s new Galaxy Note arrived with a brand new display, design, camera, software, and more. Better yet, it arrived in early October for customers in the United States. Thanks to its power and its youth, the Galaxy Note 3 is one of the top smartphone options at the moment and should remain one well into the new year.

Like all smartphones though, the Galaxy Note 3 will likely get replaced by something new, something better. And that something better will likely be a fourth-generation Samsung Galaxy Note, a Samsung Galaxy Note 4.

It’s still early in the year but already, we’ve heard quite a bit about the company’s Galaxy Note 3 successor. Before we dive into the Galaxy Note 4 rumors themselves though, we want to set the stage and take a look at what we know about Samsung.

This will help us to paint a clearer picture for those that might be interesting in picking up a brand new Samsung Galaxy Note 4 sometime later on this year.

What We Know About Samsung

Galaxy Note Launch Date

At the moment, we don’t know too much about the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 itself. However, we do know a lot about Samsung and how it approaches its Samsung Galaxy Note. For a number of years now, the company has followed some pretty distinct patterns. And while it’s not guaranteed to follow the script in 2014, there is a good chance that its three previous Galaxy Note launches foreshadow what’s to come.

Samsung typically holds two to three big launch dates a year. Last year, we saw it host an Unpacked 4 Episode 1 event in New York City where it announced the Galaxy S4. In June, the company took the stage in London and announced the Galaxy S4 mini and the Galaxy S4 zoom, though the event was not an Unpacked event. Samsung reserves those for big name devices.

On September 4th, ahead of IFA 2014, Samsung hosted another Unpacked event, Unpacked Episode 2, that served as the launch pad for the Galaxy Note 3. This marked the third time in a row that Samsung used IFA to announce its Galaxy Note model.

This year, Samsung returned to Mobile World Congress and announced the Samsung Galaxy S5 at an Unpacked 5 Episode 1 launch event. Notice the “Episode 1” in the name, it alludes to another Unpacked event down the road.

History may not repeat itself but smart money is on Samsung not only using an Unpacked Episode 2 or Episode 3 show for the Galaxy Note 4 launch but using the same trade show that it has used to launch the Galaxy Note three times in a row.

IFA 2014 kicks off on September 5th and there is a very good chance that the Galaxy Note 4 launch date could take place at the beginning of September once again.

Galaxy Note Release Date

We know that Samsung loves to get its smartphones out just a few weeks after their announcements. In the case of the Galaxy Note 3, the device arrived just about three weeks after it announced on stage.

It took about a month in the United States. The Galaxy S5 is taking a similar path. It was announced at the end of February and will arrive on April 11th in more than 150 countries.

Galaxy Note Features

Samsung’s new Galaxy Note models always come with some specific changes. First, Samsung always switches out the processor for something better.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy S5 are the most recent devices from Samsung.

Second, it always adds new software and in the case of the Galaxy Note, it continues to tweak and add to the S Pen specific software that is on board.

Third, we’ve never seen Samsung keep the same design for more than a year. We also now know that Samsung now likes to upgrade the camera on its flagship smartphones year-after-year. It knows that it can’t keep the same technology around for two years. It’ll get burned.

What We Think We Know About the Samsung Galaxy Note 4

So that’s how the Samsung Galaxy Note tends to play out every year. Now, we’ll take a look at what we know about the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 itself. Unsurprisingly, Galaxy Note 4 rumors are very much in line with the patterns that Samsung follows when it comes to its other flagship Galaxy smartphone.

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 Launch Date

Back in January, a Samsung executive casually told Recode that the company was planning a Galaxy S5 launch in the spring and a Galaxy Note 4 launch this fall. A Samsung executive relayed something similar to Bloomberg, saying that a new Galaxy Note was planned for later on this year and that it would land in the second half, just like the Galaxy Note models before it.

Given what we know about Samsung and its Galaxy Note series, this makes a whole lot of sense. So, what prospective Galaxy Note 4 buyers need to know is that the Galaxy Note 4 is more than likely going to arrive at an Unpacked event sometime this fall, possibly sometime between September 1st and September 5th.

Galaxy Note 4 Features

We’ve heard quite a bit about the features that will be on board the Samsung Galaxy Note 4. An early report claimed that the Galaxy Note 4 would come with a fingerprint sensor, something that seems more likely now that the Galaxy S5 possesses one.

Rumors also point to the inclusion of three-sided display. Reports center on a “bent” display that would offer better viewing angles for Galaxy Note 4 users. While this isn’t set in stone, it’s possible given that Samsung released a prototype called the Galaxy Round last year. The Galaxy Round featured a curved display.

A report from Korean daily Daum hints at a possible display change for the Galaxy Note 4. It claims that Samsung is intent on releasing a device with QHD resolution later this year and that that device could be the Galaxy Note 4. We did not see this feature emerge on the Galaxy S5 though there is a chance that Samsung could release another Galaxy S5 model with this kind of resolution later in the year. If it does, there’s a good chance it will emerge on the Galaxy Note 4 as well.

Again, we know that Samsung loves to borrow technology from its Galaxy S for its new Galaxy Note models. We have gone into detail about the features we think Samsung could pull from the Galaxy S and put on the Galaxy Note 4. Those include:

  • A locked-in display size
  • New processor
  • New camera
  • New design
  • Upgraded software
  • Familiar carriers

None of those are set in stone but knowing Samsung, there is a very good chance that some of these could be on board the real Galaxy Note 4 later on this year.

We also know that Samsung is likely to release a brand new wearable alongside the Galaxy Note 4. Samsung promised new wearables alongside the Galaxy S5 and it delivered with the Gear 2 and the Gear Fit. We expect Samsung to deliver on its promise later on this year and for the Galaxy Note 4 to accompany another device to launch.

That is everything that prospective buyers need to know right now about the Samsung Galaxy Note 4. Of course, we expect more information to trickle out as we get closer to the Galaxy Note 4 launch, which again, will probably take place in early September.

So, what exactly did we need to know? There’s nothing in the article that we really NEED to know. No big surprises, no leaked pictures, no specs.

Yes, a new model probably will have a new processor, camera, design and software. That’s why it’s called A NEW MODEL! Geez!

Plain and Simple what I thought would be the Note 3 in 2013 actually turned out to be the Galaxy Note 4 instead with the bended display. Either way just like the Note 2 and Note 3 was mines on day one so will be the Galaxy Note 4 on day one

I hope they bring back the music screen function that pops up when you plug in headphones. I loved that on the Note 2.
