Samsung Galaxy S3 Android 4.4 KitKat Update Hits Snag

Published

on

It appears that the Samsung Galaxy S3 Android 4.4 KitKat update may not roll out for at least one region as a regional arm of Samsung says that a Galaxy S3 Android 4.4 update isn’t in the works because of its RAM.

Earlier this week, Samsung confirmed a great number of Galaxy Android 4.4 KitKat updates including updates for the Galaxy S4, Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 3, and Galaxy Note 2. Some of those update have begun to hit the United States though the Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2 updates may not arrive until March, April or later.

Many assumed that other regions around the world would follow the United States but it appears that that may not be the case, at least for one of Samsung’s most popular devices.

Galaxy S3

According to Samsung Poland, and confirmed by comments to Polish blogger Robert Nawrowski, the Galaxy S3 Android 4.4 KitKat update will not roll out in Poland because it only possesses 1GB of RAM. The Galaxy S3 in the United States comes with 2GB of RAM.

The regional arm claims that it simply cannot get the software aboard due to the system requirements which means that the former flagship could remain on Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. It’s not clear if this will affect all 1GB versions of the Samsung Galaxy S3 but it certainly isn’t a good sign.

Backlash in regard to this decision is expected to be fierce given the prominence of the Galaxy S3 and given that Android 4.4 KitKat supports devices that utilize just 512MB of RAM. Keep in mind, while the Galaxy S3 does utilize 1GB of RAM, it also comes with an intensive piece of software in Samsung’s TouchWiz.

The company reportedly had trouble with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, something that caused it to skip ahead to Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, and we have seen loads of complaints about Android 4.3 Jelly Bean itself, even for Galaxy S3 users with 2GB of RAM.

The Samsung Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2 can run S Voice from the Galaxy S4 with S Voice Drive.

At the very least, it’s looking like the Polish version of the Galaxy S3 won’t get Android 4.4 KitKat and we wouldn’t be surprised to see other devices miss out as well.

Of course there should be a way for those to get Android 4.4 KitKat board the Galaxy S3 should it not arrive in official form. Those who root and unlock their device will be able to get Android 4.4 KitKat on their phone, it will just require some patience and the help of the Galaxy S3 development community.

Samsung Poland did confirm a number of other Android 4.4 KitKat updates including updates for the Galaxy Note 3, Galaxy S4, and the Samsung Galaxy Note 2.

Lack of good updates is why I quit buying HTC. If Samsung chooses to ignore my S3, it will be my last Samsung product. I know I can root, but why should I have to do that. They should be the ones trying to keep their users satisfied.

These devices may be inevitably included in the list of devices officially supported by a stable version of Cyanogenmod 11.

Wait … the European version of the Galaxy S3 does not get the KitKat update because it only has 1 GB of RAM ? As far as my sources go; one of the features of Android 4.4 KitKat is that it is specially made for phones that have less then 1GB of RAM (e.g. 512MB).

Android 4.3 Jelly Bean uses more RAM than KitKat. Still, my Galaxy S3 (1GB) has an official 4.3 ROM on it. This means that the S3 is more than capable to run 4.4 KitKat. Also, there are custom 4.4.2 ROM’s available.

In my opinion, there is no technical reason what so ever for Samsung to prevent installation of 4.4.2 KitKat ROM’s on ANY kind of Galaxy S3, whether it has either 1 or 2GB of RAM. If your Galaxy S3 is able to run 4.3 Jelly Bean (all models do), it WILL be able to run 4.4 KitKat.

It can run 4.3 because the touchwix nature ux version is different the new nature ux interface takes more than 1gb of ram to run with the 4.4.2 os… Sorry but that’s just how it is so root or upgrade… That’s the choices
