Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 Roll Out: Another U.S. Release Date Confirmed

Published

on

The Samsung Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat update release will continue in the United States tomorrow as AT&T today confirmed that it will be rolling out the anticipated Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat update just a few short days after Sprint and U.S. Cellular rolled out their versions of the update.

Earlier this month, Sprint and U.S. Cellular rolled out their Samsung Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat updates. They were the first carriers to do so though they will not be the last as the Galaxy S4 resides on a number of other major, regional and pre-paid carriers.

While the Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat update will roll out to all versions of the Galaxy S4 in the United States, carriers have remained mum on specific release dates. Historically, they have divulged the most important information just before the actual roll out, and that’s exactly what has occurred for AT&T users today.

The Galaxy S4 wireless charger slips inside the back, so cases still work.

AT&T announced today that it will be rolling out the Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat update starting tomorrow, February 26th. The update will be available over a Wi-Fi connection only and it will vary between 412MB and 842MB in size depending on the operating system that it’s replacing.

The carrier notes that it will come with several enhancements including the feature that we’ve seen push out with the other Android 4.4 KitKat upgrades as well as call reliability improvements.

These Android 4.4 KitKat upgrades do not come with any of the enhancements that Samsung just introduced with the Galaxy S5, its latest Galaxy S smartphone. Samsung will likely deliver some Galaxy S5 software features to Galaxy S4 owners down the road though they will come in a future Android update.

AT&T becomes the third U.S. carrier to provide the Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat update leaving T-Mobile and Verizon as the only major carriers stuck on Android 4.3 Jelly Bean.

Typically, carriers release updates within a few days of each other and so users on T-Mobile and Verizon should see updates roll out within the next couple of weeks as the carriers keep pace with their rivals. Regional and pre-paid carriers typically push their updates live after major carriers.

So did I. But why is 4.3 only available today for Note 3 users on AT&T

I did my Note 3 yesterday. I’m perplexed. I’m hoping it’s an indication that 4.4 is around the corner…but I remain skeptical.
