Sea of Thieves Pre-Orders: Which Edition to Buy

Published

on

Sea of Thieves launches this March after years of teasing. That means it’s finally time to place Sea of Thieves pre-orders and claim every extra DLC and bit of savings you can.

Developed by Rare, players become crew members of their own pirate ship and roam the game’s seas for other ships to plunder. Whereas other pirate games have focused on a single-player story, Sea of Thieves focuses heavily on multiplayer. You form your own crew with your friends to explore its world. The ships you plunder for their treasure belong to other Xbox One and Windows gamers.

Sea of Thieves launches on March 20th, but you don’t need to wait until then to purchase the game. Here’s everything you need to know about Sea of Thieves pre-orders today.

Sea of Thieves Editions

There aren’t many editions of Sea of Thieves to choose from despite the game being one of this year’s must-have Xbox exclusives. In fact, the only thing you need to choose is whether you want the game on a disc or installed completely on your hard drive.

Before choosing an edition, consider subscribing to Xbox Game Pass. That subscription now comes with launch day access to every exclusive Xbox game. That includes Sea of Thieves. A 6-month membership costs $59.99.

Sea of Thieves Disc

Sea of Thieves costs $59.99 if you want a physical copy of the game that you can trade in later or lend to friends. That price gets you the game itself, an invitation to the Sea of Thieves Closed Beta starting on January 24th and the Black Dog Pack.

The Black Dog pack unlocks an outfit with a hat, peg leg, boots and gloves. You also get a musical instrument and a Black Dog cutlass to use as you board other ships and capture their crew.

Best Buy, Amazon, Game Stop and the Microsoft Store are all taking physical Sea of Thieves pre-orders. If you buy now, you should get your copy of the game on release day.

Sea of Thieves on Digital

Buying a digital copy of Sea of Thieves also gets you the Black Dog Pack and access to the game’s beta for $59,99. That’s the same price as a physical copy of the game. However, it’s the best version to buy if you don’t trade your old games or have a gaming PC.

Sea of Thieves is an Xbox Play Anywhere title. Because of that, buying the game through the Microsoft Store or a code for a digital version unlocks a second version for you to enjoy on your Windows 10 PC. Game saves and any DLC you buy sync between these two versions. Really, you get two copies of the game for the same price.
