How to Setup the PS4 (Video)

The PS4 is here and if you need help setting up the PlayStation 4 and connecting your new game console to your HDTV and the Internet here’s a walkthrough to get you on your way to gaming.

If you are a parent connecting the PS4 to your HDTV or a gift, you don’t need to pay Best Buy’s Geek Squad $99 to hook up the cables and connect to your home network, and you don’t need to ruin the surprise by having the kids hook it up either.

With game consoles coming out once every eight or so years, you even be the gamer yourself, but not prepared to hook things up. Don’t worry the process is straightforward and should take about 10 minutes for setup and maybe a little longer to get the console updated and ready to play.

If you are giving the PS4 as a gift we highly recommend taking it out of the box and updating it before giving it to someone. Processing updates and signing in on December 25th will likely be very busy. On the PS4 release date it took several tries to connect to the PlayStation Network and initially the download for the PlayStation 1.50 update took some time.

The first step is to unbox all the parts that come with the PS4. DOn’t lose the small pamphlet that shows you your codes for free trials online and for the PlayStation Store.

When everything is unboxed, find the HDMI cable. This is a black cable with an and that looks like the image below. This connects to the back of the PS4 in the only port that it fits in. It can also connect to a soundbar or HDTV in a port of the same size.

Press this firmly in on the back of the PS4 and on the back of your HDTV. If your HDTV does not have HDMI you will need to buy a new HDTV as there is no component out support for the PS4.

Next connect the AC power adapter to the PS4 and to the surge protector or wall. This only fits in one place, and it is a good idea to use a surge protector. After this is connected if you plan to use a network cable to directly connect to a router plug it into the back in the spot that looks like a large telephone outlet and also to the back of your router.

Next up you will need to press the power button on the PS4. It is a small sliver of a button on the upper half of the device, located between the glossy and matte finish areas of the PS4.

Here’s how to connect to a wireless network. In settings at the top menu bar go to Network. From here you will need to choose Set Up Internet connection. Choose Easy and then select your WiFi network and enter the password. This should connect you and complete the setup.

The PS4 will boot up and download a PlayStation 1.50 update which will enable new features. When this downloads and installs the PS4 will need to reboot. Once this is complete we suggest singing in to your PSN account or signing up for a PSN account. You can sign up on the console or online, but if you plan to do this on the PS4 release date, it’s a good idea to sign up for a new account online as the servers are slow and it may time out on the PS4 forcing you to start over.

After this you can put a game in and start playing right away, and the game will install in the background.
