Skyrim Special Edition Release: 5 Things to Know

Published

on

Bethesda’s announced a Skyrim remaster called Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition. Here, we take a look at the most important things to know about the Skyrim Special Edition release date and more as we push away from its release date.

In 2011, Bethesda released Skyrim, an open-world RPG that was set two hundred years after the events in Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.

Last year, Bethesda told gamers that it got Skyrim running on the Xbox One but that it only did so as a technical exercise. At the time, Howard told the publication that fans of Skyrim and the Elder Scrolls series shouldn’t get their hopes up “yet.”

Howard left the door open and at E3 2016 Bethesda confirmed Skyrim remaster officially called Skyrim Special Edition.

With that in mind, we want to take a look at everything we know right now about the Skyrim Special Edition, the big changes and its upcoming release date.

We’ll continue to update this roundup with new details as we approach the game’s release so check back frequently.

Skyrim for PS4 & Xbox One

As expected, the Skyrim remaster will be available for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Windows PC. Next year, it should head to the new Nintendo Switch but Bethesda hasn’t confirmed it outright. It won’t be released for the PS3, Xbox 360, or Nintendo’s Wii U.

skyrim-special-edition-2

Bethesda says that “if you own the PC version of Skyrim and all its add-ons – Dawnguard, Hearthfire and Dragonborn – on Steam, you’ll get a free upgrade to Skyrim Special Edition” when it releases later this year. The same applies to anyone who owns Skyrim Legendary Edition on Steam.

Steam has started adding the game to the libraries of those who own the game and all of the DLC. The process will take some time:

We have started added Skyrim Special Edition to the libraries of customers who own Skyrim and all of its add-ons, and opened the game for pre-load for those users. Unfortunately, the process of adding the game to people’s accounts is going a bit slower than we originally anticipated. If you already own Skyrim and all the DLC but you aren’t seeing Special Edition in your Steam Library, don’t panic! We should have it added to everyone’s accounts within the next 24 hours, and then we will continue adding it to people who complete their collection in batches as we approach the Special Edition launch on Thursday.

Steam is currently offering a discount on the regular version of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and all of its add-ons noting that you’ll get the Special Edition version of Skyrim for PC when the game arrives later this year.

There won’t be any such discount for those who own the game for Xbox 360 and/or PS3, it seems. Skyrim owners on Xbox 360 and PS3 will have to pay full price for a copy of the game.

The Skyrim remaster will also come with all of the DLC add-ons Bethesda released after the game’s arrival in November of 2011.

Bethesda released three pieces of paid Skyrim DLC including Dawnguard, Hearthfire, and Dragonborn. The last of these, Dragonborn, was released in late 2012 for Xbox 360 and early 2013 for the PS3 and Windows PC.

The developer says that all of the DLC will be integrated into Skyrim Special Edition so you most likely won’t have to download several different files to jump into the game and its DLC content.

Unfortunately, the old DLC will be it. The company says that it won’t be making any new Skyrim DLC for PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4 so you’ll need to rely on developers and Skyrim mods to alter your game down the road.

Bethesda’s Todd Howard also confirms that Skyrim saves on PC should transfer to the new version of the game. If you’ve used mods with your Skyrim saves, it might not be as straightforward. We’ll know more once the game arrives.

That’s obviously big for those that invested a ton of time in the open-world RPG. Unfortunately game saves will not transfer from Xbox 360 to Xbox One or PS3 to PS4.

A few other notes:

Best Buy is offering an exclusive Skyrim Special Edition Dragonborn bundle for $75. For $75 you’ll get the game, a steelbook case and a collectible Dovahkiin Mask.

Bethesda’s confirmed a Skyrim Special Edition console. If you enter the contest you could win a special Xbox One S or PlayStation 4 Pro.

We’ve been getting tons of questions about the Skyrim Special Edition PC requirements. Bethesda has finally confirmed the Skyrim Special Edition PC requirements. Here’s a look at what you’ll need to run the game:

The minimum Skyrim Special Edition PC requirements:

  • Windows 7/8.1/10 (64-bit Version)
  • Intel i5-750/AMD Phenom II X4-945.
  • 8GB of ram.
  • 12 GB free HDD space
  • NVIDIA GTX 470 1GB /AMD HD 7870 2GB

The recommended Skyrim Special Edition PC specs:

  • Windows 7/8.1/10 (64-bit Version)

  • 8GB of ram.
  • 12 GB free HDD space
  • NVIDIA GTX 780 3GB /AMD R9 290 4GB

As for the game’s size on PS4 and Xbox One, it’s pretty big. Here’s what you’re looking at in North America and Europe.

  • 33 GB (Europe)

Xbox One

  • 17 GB (North America)
  • 25 GB (Europe)

Skyrim Special Edition Release Date

The Skyrim Special Edition release date won’t arrive this summer. Instead, it lands just ahead of the holidays.

Skyrim-Special-Edition-2

The release date is confirmed for October 28th on Xbox One, PS4 and PC. A release date for the Nintendo Switch is unclear.

Skyrim Special Edition Release Time

As for the Skyrim Special Edition release time, it’ll deploy at 8PM Eastern for PC and midnight Eastern for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

ps4-xbox

Those of you on the west coast of the United States will be able to start playing the digital version of the game starting at 5PM Pacific on October 27th.

skyrim-best-buy

If you plan on picking up a physical copy, note that retailers like Best Buy will be hosting midnight launch events to accommodate your needs.

Skyrim Special Edition Reviews

If you’re hesitant to commit to the game, note that Skyrim Special Edition reviews probably won’t be out until after its release date on October 28th.

Bethesda says that it will continue its policy “of sending media review copies one day before release.”

The reason? The company wants “everyone, including those in the media, to experience our games at the same time.”

Those of you on the fence will probably want to wait a few days, maybe longer, for feedback about the game to emerge.

Improved Graphics

Bethesda’s Skyrim Special Edition will come with a fresh coat of paint for Xbox One, Windows PC, and PlayStation 4.

Skyrim-PS3-1

Bethesda notes that Skyrim Special Edition comes with remastered art and effects including volumetric god rays, dynamic depth of field, new snow shaders, new water shaders, and screen-space reflections.

The trailers up top give you a good look at some of these changes in action and the screenshots here show you the difference between the PlayStation 3 version of Skyrim and the remastered version on the PlayStation 4.

Needless to say, it looks much better on the current-generation console.

Skyrim-Special-Edition-1

Three things that won’t be in the game? A new UInew content, and VR content. You’ll see the same quests, characters, and items.

The company says there won’t be any VR content available for Skyrim Special Edition, at least not at the beginning. Bethesda appears to be focused on the Fallout 4 VR release which is set to arrive on HTC Vive sometime next year.

Skyrim Special Edition Price & Deals

Skyrim Special Edition for PS4 and Xbox One will cost a full $60. Fortunately, if you don’t want to pay the full $60, you won’t have to.

Skyrim-Special-Edition-4

Amazon will cut the price for its Amazon Prime members down to $47.99. And yes, this deal will be available to those who using a trial Amazon Prime account.

Best Buy will also offer 20% off for Gamers Club Unlocked members and Green Man Gaming will almost certainly offer a voucher for the PC version of Skyrim Special Edition.

Keep an eye out for additional deals as we make our way toward the Skyrim Special Edition release date in late October.

Skyrim Mods for PS4 & Xbox One

Skyrim Special Edition will come with mods for PC and it will also come with mods for the PS4 and Xbox One. Yes, Skyrim PS4 mods are confirmed and some are already live on Bethesda’s website.

Skyrim-Special-Edition-1

Earlier this year Bethesda pushed Fallout 4 mods for Xbox One. The company also planned to push out PS4 Fallout 4 mods though they were delayed and nearly cancelled. Fortunately, Bethesda and Sony have been able to work things out and Skyrim mods will be available for the PS4 when the game launches on October 28th.

In a recent announcement, Bethesda confirmed plans to bring Skyrim mods to PS4 . That’s obviously a huge change of events and excellent news for those looking to get the most out of Skyrim Special Edition on PS4. Skyrim mods will work on both the regular PS4 and the PS4 Pro.

Unfortunately, developers “will not be able to upload external assets with” PS4 Skyrim mods. Developers will, however, be “able to use any assets that come with the game.”

This will limit what developers can do with PS4 Skyrim mods because nothing new can be added to the game.

PS4 Slim DualShock 4 Controller at gameStop

According to Howard and Hines, there is a separate Creation Kit that will be used to upload mods for Skyrim Special Edition to Bethesda.net. The Skyrim Special Edition Creation kit will go through a beta before its released to the public in November and those looking to test it can sign up now for a beta.

You will need a Bethesda.net account to signup for the Skyrim Special Edition beta. Creating an account takes all of a few minutes. You can find the Skyrim Special Edition mod guidelines right here.

skyrim-special-edition-1

Skyrim mod developers will need to run their mods through a brand new creation kit in order for them to work with the new game. Mods running at 32-bit will need to be changed to be compatible with the game as its 64-bit.

At least some Skyrim mods for Xbox One and PS4 should be available to download on release day though don’t expect to see thousands sprout up immediately. We’ve already seen some mods emerge but the list is a short one.

As for Skyrim mods size, Bethesda notes that mods will reserve 5 GB on the Xbox One and 1GB on the PlayStation 4. Which, of course, is a huge difference.

In the meantime, check out our Skyrim mods wish for Xbox One and PS4 in the list below. These are some of our favorite Skyrim mods for PC.

163 PS4 & Xbox One Skyrim Mods You Should Try Right Now

A Quality Map

A Quality Map

One of our favorite Skyrim mods for PC is now available for console.

A Quality World Map by IcePenguin is an essential mod for PC. And now that it's available for console, it's an essential mod for Xbox One. (It's not available for PS4 yet.)

Bethesda's vanilla Skyrim map is decent enough but this mod takes it to the next level with improved textures and detailed roads.

The developer has literally drawn out every single road in the game and needless to say, it's impressive. And useful.

For more info, take a look at the video below.

Trust us, this one is very, very good. Give it a try today.

Not only do console owners have to buy it but our saves don’t carry forward either. I don’t think I can loose out on over 4 years of game time therefore I’ll have to sacrifice better graphics and the ability to add mods and just stick with the original :(

This is what you get for being a console peasant! Seriously though it’s always better to play these sort of games on PC. Anyway is it really such a big deal to start over again? After hundreds of hours of play, sometimes it’s just good to delete all content and do something else. A fresh start on a remastered edition sounds tempting.

Also ignore the other commentator. I care and he obviously did because he wouldn’t have replied otherwise. He certainly wouldn’t be that rude in real life, would be some most unpleasant consequences if he was!

“Console Peasant” at least consoles don’t crash as often as PC. And at least the controls are logical instead of having one hand on one side of the atmosphere and your other hand in the other side of the atmosphere.

Classic answer of console gamer without any valid argument. You would sacrifice comfort of gameplay and variety of options in mods just for a game which chrashes little bit less? No wonder you console gamers are being called peasants. You are just modern slaves of game industries

Ok im with autumnwood, its pretty obvious, pc gamers are better than console gamers and thats final, no arguing, and the controls are better!! PC has mods, and more buttons, like you press C then you can keep walking, without touching your keyboard, or SKYUI, way better user interface. but seriously, PC is better, thats the truth, now why dont you continue to use your wooden plate, and stop making yourself look dumb :)

It may or may not keep the saves on your console as all saves are located on the hard drive and not the disc its self, hopefully the console recognises the game as the original and converts all saves onto the new game.

Now if only they include some (in my eyes CORE) Mods into the games re release such as falskaar COT and frostfall and better minor things that mods have fixed such as shadow striping and Real Shelter (no random rain clipping) oh and Realistic needs and diseases, then and only then will i pay full price again for it

    • Ronan McIntyre

      07/10/2016 at 7:54 pm

They wouldn’t add a lot of those on partly cause they are property of the modders and would this have to pay the modders part of the profit, so the more mods the use, the more money lose. Also not everyone would want Frostfall and realistic needs and disease

It is blatantly obvious why consoles are paying a rip off FULL PRICE for an upgraded game. Take one look at PC and their FREE re release. PC elitists whine every time a new console gets an upgraded version so they give it to them for free at OUR expense. Why exactly should PC get a free version? PC users paid a LOT less than console users did for their copies. PC can still play the original just fine on their systems. They have full modding capability to up graphics beyond 2k.

What exactly was the rationale that dictated dev time for new console versions had to be wasted on a PC version they didn’t even need? To be honest I don’t know why Bethesda even bothers with consoles. They have always had clear preference and don’t care for the millions in support they have received from the console fanbase. In fact it was one of the biggest games on both Xbox and PS. That is why I only respect companies that pay equal and fair respect to EVERY platform that supports them.

If you are going to give it to PC for free when they have copies you should give it for free or at least discounted on next gen consoles. There is no rationale behind playing favourites here. You did no more for the console version then you did the PC version that would justify full price. I would bet you probably did less for consoles. Someone really needs to get up in their faces about screwing over console owners and have them justify full price for one but not the other. If people were smart they would let it flop and have them beg for console support with discounts.

    • Tom

      07/05/2016 at 3:43 am

What you clearly don’t understand is that Microsoft and Sony decide on the price games on console are sold. PC is consumer friendly. Console isn’t. No point getting annoyed at us PC users for you choosing an inferior platform.

      • Dominic

        07/23/2016 at 8:37 pm

          09/26/2016 at 8:40 am

Not really seeing how he was dissing you. All he did was provide facts and one opinion. I myself own both a pc and a xbox one. In a few weeks or so I will also have a ps4. Yes I’m getting a free copy for pc because I own the legendary edition. But that’s not going to stop me from buying it on one of my consoles. It’s really not that big of a deal.

And the opinion he had about pc being inferior I agree with. When you upgrade or get a whole new pc all your older games and saves are still there. Sure xbox one has backwards compatibility now but it’s very limited and very sad. Upgrading a pc is very noticeable and more efficient.

the way sony and micrsoft are going about consoles is the same treatment smart phones are getting. Teeny tiny upgrades that require you to buy a whole new machine. Like ps4 pro such small improvements that aren’t going to be worth sinking the extra money in. Or xbox one to xbox one s to scorpio. If you already own a xbox one you’re just getting ripped off buying a xbox one s.

As for xbox scorpio, sure there are going to some significant improvements but with the rumored price being $800, forget that. That 800 dollars could go a longer way in improving my pc and blow any console out of the water.

I could probably go on and on some more but I think this novel is long enough.

Probably because they’re gonna add more dlc expansions for 20$ each and need the PC players to have the remastered so they can buy the dlc. At release the PC crowd won’t need the remastered because they’ve got the mods, and probably wouldn’t be willing to shell out 60$ for the base game just for the dlc expansions. It’s a good strategy!

the reason PC gets it for free is because it’s a moot point to PC players as the new ENB and texture is already existent on PC.

      07/19/2016 at 11:05 am

Wow, what games do PC users get given free because they “whine” about it. PC users pay a little bit more for their hardware, and overall a lot less for their games. Seriously, instead of bitching, buy a PC. Consoles are pretty much outdated by the time they are released compared to PC. Instead of shelling out dead money for a box that can’t be upgraded, Spend an extre 30-40% on a PC. If you are an avid gamer, and spend say £400 a year on console games, (10-ish games?) then consoles are a waste. put that extra money into buying a PC setup and enjoy much cheaper games for the lifetime of your computer. Overall you will save a fortune compared to what you would spend during your consoles lifetime. Like the other guy said, don’t piss and moan because you chose the inferior platform.

      • Destiny

        09/06/2016 at 3:58 am

Well some people don’t spend half their lives on a PC like most of you do. Something we like to call a thirty five year old sitting in his mother’s basement refusing to take out the trash trying to pick up 12 year old girls while screaming hacker Everytime the die in cod or Csgo. Ain’t nobody got time to buy a good PC… Which are not cheap… If they’re not on it for 3 hours a day and have more important things to do then they don’t need a PC.
Sorry but not sorry it’s the truth.

        • Nic

          10/01/2016 at 9:17 pm

Way to generalize PC users… Losers stuck in a basement that can only afford expensive computers because we only care about that(?). Yet, you’re the console gamer that’s apparently doing so well in life that you can’t afford a good PC. Truth is you’re pretty much in no great position to judge so many people. PC’s can at least function as a tool to make money.

        • Token Alpaca

          10/19/2016 at 5:19 pm

Way to generalize a bunch of PC gamers :L. Unlike a console, a PC can be built over time you tit.
My PC i bought for a measly $450 (Not even US Dollars, NZ Dollars. Work it out to US, idc enough to work it out) and over the last 6 years I’ve gradually bought parts and upgraded it into the gaming machine it is.
Here’s the thing. I’m 24, not living in my mother’s basement (actually living out on my own), and i don’t hit up 12 year olds trying to get into their pants. If that is what you believe to be the stigma around PC gamers, you are delusional. Games are so damn advanced these days that it’s mainstream. Having a PC is a smart option. I own a console as well, and i could never live without my PC even though I play games more extensively on my PS4. Why? Because at the end of the day, i can’t alt+tab over to my gba emulator, or nds emulator, or ps1/ps2 emulator on a ps4.

Console pricing and delivery methods (Download Only, vs DL and Disc) are heavily influenced by the console maker (MS\XB1, Sony\PS4). So there is a layer of markup that the developers (and gamers) have to accept.

The Skyrim Modding community has been doing so on PC for years. Skyrim remastered is pretty much Bethesda taking the improvements they made on the Fallout 4 engine and using it to remaster Skyrim. Additional textures, meshes, graphics, lighting, etc… has been mainly produced by modders on the PC. Bethesda has benefited greatly from the PC community in terms of content, technical support, and some pretty interesting fixes for unforeseen issues with modern PC hardware (if you really want to see an example of this, check out all the memory allocation fix mods on nexus mods).

One huge benefit console users have is that they put the game in… and it works. On PC that is not always the case. Different hardware configurations, Operating System versions and patch level, an a bunch of miscellaneous issues can cause problems for PC users. Skyrim is one of the few games that built a community. I’ve never had issues getting community support from mod sites, or other Skyrim players that have fixes for me to try… which is odd because there are trolls all over the internet now and the flames run deep in many other communities.

I’m not attempting to justify their decision… but on PC they go through Steam. Steam must be allowing them to distribute for free (Bethesda would not eat any costs associated with giving PC users a free updated copy).

As a PC and Console gamer, I don’t have a problem with Bethesda charging for the remaster… Skyrim came out over 5 years ago. with TES6 not even being in the works (most likely due to ESO) an update to the engine is very much needed and appreciated. I have copies of Skyrim or both PC and XB360, I’ll most likely get a PS4 copy when it comes out… but that is just my opinion.

The only option you have to object is to vote with your wallet… don’t buy the remaster and stick with the Skyrim you already know and love. That is the only real way to get the attention of publishers and console manufacturers.

Again, this is just my opinion, take it with as much (or as little) salt as you prefer.

You say you have it on Xbox and ps3 and still you have the ability to say we can just put it in and it works, I think you and almost every other owner of the console versions had a very different experience of what would be an almost flawless game.

I have it on ps3 and will definitely get it on ps4, but the time I had with it on ps3 was definitely not smooth.

Oi, buddy, you know that mod support your xbone/ps4 is going to have with the SE? Who do you think makes those mods? Bethesda? No. PC GAMERS. PC gamers that have no need for the SE and for whom the SE may as well be a downgrade for. That’s why they’re giving it to PC gamers for free – so some nice soul will upgrade and decide “Hmm… maybe I’ll redo my mod and maaayyybe I’ll tweak it to work on console.” For free. In their spare time.

Only PC gamers make the mods, bro. If this is one of their selling points, then they need PC gamers, who don’t need it, to have it and play it and make mods for it. And since some gratious PC gamers are putting in the work to make mods for YOUR console, even after the rampant mod theft with FO4, we get it free. Because there’s no way to sell it to us otherwise and without us there are no mods for you. Period.

Look, man, I get that you’re upset because you’ll need to rebuy the game, but even without the mod support you’re paying to get to play on your xbone/ps4, whereas PC gamers already have it on their latest console, modded to be better def and have further missions and new followers and custom houses and adopting more children and marrying more people and everything, which is more than your xbone can handle. We have no reason to buy. Bethesda put in all their work here for you alone – PC gamers didn’t ask for this game, we actually are wary of it because a lot of our more in-depth tools won’t be updated for another year or more after release. But you need /us/ if you want mods.

Tldr – You guys have reason to buy, we do not, and you need us if you want mods. If they charged us for it, they’d get about $0 in sales and no mods for you.

The development time for the PC was to add a video filter. The development for the consoles was recompiling the code and debugging and rewriting for both consoles, adjusting textures and meshes to fit memory constraints, adjusting load times, testing every cell for issues with crashes on new hardware. If it wasn’t free PC would ignore it, slap on ENB on the old one, and be done with it. Really the best news for PC was the mention of an improved creation kit that hopefully doesn’t crash every 5 minutes. If PC users have anything to be upset about it’s how much time they are wasting on the consoles when it could be put toward a new Elder Scrolls game.

      08/04/2016 at 1:22 pm

Ok first thing the new remastered skyrim will be released at 64bit where the old version is 32 bit. This means the remasted will run more optimally even without mods. Second thing, the pc version is being made for the same system, pc. Where the consoles are a different new system which requires more licenses, work on a new operating system. Its not as simple as pressing a button that says make for ps4. PC is very friendly to devs as making something on a computer for a computer is easier than doing it for a console.

At this point i wish they weren’t even releasing it to console because you guys do nothing other than complain unless your playing halo, which you are willing to pay for on a rerelease but when it comes to paying for a game that has time and time again been placed in the top 10 games of all time, sometimes even taking the number one slot, you gotta complain about paying for it. Save your “its not fair” for daycare or buy a pc.

By the way i’ve never heard a pc user complaining about new consoles. I paid $2000 for my computer, i dont have the option of buying a used game, and most controls and ui’s are optimized for controllers over the superior keyboard/mouse. I think its fair us pc users get the upperhand of the deal here.

Some people also ridicule other people who would buy the game and already own it on another console, and say that’s a stupid move, now why is that

    • Pastafarian

      08/18/2016 at 9:29 am

The reason why is because of consumerism, also it’s because PC users already have the special edition mate? Modders have created better graphics than this for the PC version of skyrim. Why pay for special edition when you can get it for free already?

I’m a bit late to the party, but you do realise they have to rebuild the game from the ground up for PS4 and Xbox One since they are new consoles? The PC version merely requires a few tweaks.

Where do they get these mods from? Do they make them or did they get them off of popular mod websites like Nexus Mods?

Also depending on the answer I get, is it only the Popular mods or as many as they can find/get to work?

    • Rachel

      07/16/2016 at 5:33 pm

The mods will be user created and uploaded for console use by their authors.

For existing mods, they will have to be converted for use. Meaning that whether or not they go to console largely depends on the author’s interest in doing so.

There are also many mods that won’t make it to the console for technical reasons. Some because they require SKSE, some because of their size in relation the console’s memory restrictions.

So, in my estimation, consoles won’t see any major gameplay overhaul mods. It will be mostly mods that add content such as new weapons and armor, etc.

I love the idea of updating Skyrim, but I really would like for Bethesda to reconsider the talents. I don’t like that you can literally be the master of every little thing in the game – the decision isn’t what you can do without, it’s what you might only need a third of the way into the game

    • Skeptic

      07/27/2016 at 2:42 am

I always thought this as well. I prefer making multiple characters that are good at certain play styles rather than the all around warrior-thief-wizards this game encourages. It seems counter intuitive to want a character with less potential but I think it is more fun. For anybody that says “you don’t have to train your warrior in magic” choosing not to do things in games feels kind of lame, I like to max the potential of characters without having to choose myself what to leave out, as leveling up to your best is a classic RPG element. God mode never made games more fun, just easy and ultimately bored faster.

No way I’d expect anything like this from this new version, this is just gonna be new graphics based stuff to help this game stand up a few more years without looking like ancient history.

To those wondering why the pc version will be free and the console version won’t, the clue is in the author’s bethesda quote mentioning a tweet of bethesda’s saying they got Skyrim working on XB1.

The XB1 and PS4 are new and different platofrms than their predecessors. They need time to specifically develop the game to work on an XB1/PS4 version of the game. The same is not true of the PC. It’s also why our saves can be transferred. If they did charge for us PC owners they wouldn’t get anywhere because it would be labelled pointless cash in due to the myriad of free enhanced graphics mods that already exist and that it cost them very little to make it happen.

For console though, clearly it has taken man hours and investment to get it to work so they need to make a return on that.

They’re a business, they don’t care or get involved in petty disputes the likes of which pc and console gamers embroil themselves in. It’s not because they hate or have a vendetta against console users. That would be very bad for business and they want both parties to love them.

So please, stop with the jealousy, paranoia and bitterness from consolers; and stop with the superiority, smugness and dismissive attitudes from my fellow PC owners.

    • DJ van Staden

      09/13/2016 at 3:48 am

Dude, be warned, you’ve no idea what’s waiting for you. 5 years down the line and over 2300 hours invested in the game and STILL I can’t get enough. Skyrim is the game of the decade that never dies…

Waiting for Special Ed as well, tho I might not even be able to play it since my pc could simply be incapable. Lot’s of mods for 32-bit current version I simply can’t even try coz I only have a dual-core CPU. That means no ENB’s, no hi-res textures, etc…

Coz the Special Ed is free I will try it without risk of messing up my bank-account, PC, or current modded game. Bonus: You can play “regular” Skyrim modded to hell and have a separate, pristine, shiny and new remastered “Special” Skyrim in “stock” condition – clean. Trust me, the value of that will only become clear the upteenth time you tried to get a particular mod combination to work exactly right in exactly the way you want to and you just simply want to shout FU and play the stock game on Legendary for the achievements and be done with it… But, then you have to re-install to get that shiny clean pristine condition…then you play a couple minutes and realize you can’t play stock anymore coz you’re too used to this and that “essential” mod…and so the cycle goes on… It’s never-ending.

A word on consoles for the general community: I bought an Xbox One last year. Then got fed-up with the exorbitant cost of the games, subscriptions, etc…. So I swapped it for a PS4 figuring I paid the money already I may as well try it. Same deal – super expensive games, no mods. But, it was convenient. Which is why I got a console in the first place – convenience. I signed up for that convenience with my hard-earned cash. I knew this before I did it. That’s what consoles are about – convenience, and you pay for that.

BUT, there was no Skyrim on either at the time, and no mention of it either. When I found that I just went back to Skyrim on PC, the PS4 gradually gathering dust in the corner…I had the awakening – I’m no console guy, even though I love using the Xbox 360 wireless controller I got for my pc 3 years ago… Why? Coz it’s convenient. Console gaming, on a pc…

And now I’m pissed at myself for wasting my cash on a console when I could’ve gotten a shiny new MoBo and CPU for my pc….

Take my advice: Get a PC, get a wireless controller for that pc, and stick with it. All the options, all the flexibility, and the best of both worlds. At the least cost… With the longest lifespan. It really is a no-brainer…

BUT, the new Xbox One S does look good…hmm…so, shiny, so, néw…MUST…RESIST…THE….URGE…..! :)

    And consoles are different how?

    • Adam

      10/02/2016 at 1:43 pm

Well they are completely new consoles. they have extremely different hardware. its also a new operating system. they have to recompile it. re texturize with memory constraints on consoles. They also have to pretty much redesign the entire game to convert it onto a 64 bit console. and that would take a long time. lets say they have like 400 workers at minimum wage (like £30 below what they get paid hourly) for 200 hours each to re work the game. that would end up being…
400 * (200 * 7.20) = £576,000 and that is around a quarter of a game prgrammers average wage. Ontop of this they also have to optimise the game on console more and add in more depth of levels of render distance to see how far they can get the render distance before hitting the memory cap it is extremally different from developing a Pc game.

PC Users getting upset at being generalized? Then stop being such pretentious assholes about your computers, No one other than you gives a shit what your gaming rig can do. I have a PS4 and I’ve grown up around consoles. It’s clear that PC has a lot more content and gives your more freedom while playing games. The games are also cheaper and allow you to mod pretty much anything, but, a good PC can be expensive (especially if your like me and have no idea how to built one) and the risk of crashes and “not responding” sounds like a pain is arse. So console sounds good, you know all your games can mostly run smoothly and you get to have hard copies of your games so , like myself, you don’t have to download them all from steam or wherever else you get them from, but there is no point in arguing about it because we are all gamers looking for the same experiences. And I’m hoping cross-platforming will come to a lot of games in the feature.
I’ve also pre-ordered this game cause I spent a VERY long time playing it on the PS3 😄

Finally , a fair and honest response to the “PC elitist” vs console blue collar rants. I do both PC and Sony con.
I never could make it too far in skyrim on PS3 because I had the 1st gen slim that had problems with that game . It would totally freeze every 2-5 minutes once the save got to be around 10Mb. Sad. I got through Oblivion though with some difficulty. Too bad now that I will only be able to play the “free” steam version for PC now if I upgrade/rebuild my PC for around at least $200. What would be best for my desktop do you think PC boys and girls: an AMD black/FX or an intel i5 upgrade?

I’m surprised this is being called a remaster when the character creation will be the same. I don’t know programming and all that but it seems counterproductive to make a game’s environment and lighting look better but leave the people looking grisly and unsightly.

My question is why would I pay to get something mods have given me for the past three odd years? Also with this update (at least on pc) mods integration will bind the game with with Steam, given that most mods for Skyrim are available outside of Steam their basically screwing people over by forcing them to rely on Steam as the only source.

Ok guys. I’ve been playing Skyrim SE for a few days now (since Monday), and apart from the very clear and noticeable improvements graphically over original vanilla Skyrim from 2011, I’ve noticed a few more noteworthy tidbits that, to me, make the “upgrade” more than worthwhile:

    1. On PC I used to play with a controller anyways because, well, it’s convenient and comfortable. Well when I first started the game back in 2011 I used keyboard and mouse of course and yes it does have quite a few quick controls that may be deemed “better” than the controller. Mind you, when I finally decided to get myself a wireless Xbox 360 controller, only three things really bothered me vs the keyboard, being the lack of:
    a. A Quicksave button! (I cannot tell you enough how useful this is)
    b. An autowalk button. I still miss it, but I’ve gotten used to the controller now and only really “always run” when I’m really lazy or in a rush. The rest of the time I simply use the controller the way it’s supposed to be – slight movements of the stick. You could even say this is an advantage over pc, whereby you can gradually adjust your movement speed as opposed to only “walk” or “run” or “sprint” on pc…sometimes you just want a speed inbetween – the controller gives that.
    c. now I can’t remember the other thing… :(
Anyway, on Skyrim SE they’ve now added a quicksave function! Miles better than having to create a manual save each time and contstantly worrying if you’re saving over your “main” save, or building up so many save files that the entire game becomes sluggish and eventually crashes…
Autowalk I’ve gotten accustomed to on the controller so it’s not really an issue, though it would still be nice if something like that could make it’s way into the game somehow, either through an update from Beth or through a mod (yes, MODS on console!)… Maybe I’ll look into creating such a mod myself…if possible…

    2. Lydia improvements! This – is – incredible! Lydia no more follows you right up on your ass and then seems to freakin dumbstruck if you want her to move. She’s actually at a respectable distance befitting her status as your housecarl. No your place Lydia! lol Much improved!

    3. Commentary by NPC’s. Is it just me or are the NPC’s throwing in some additional remarks that kinda make more sense and seems more realistic as you interact with them? Or is it the mod I’m using? Not sure, but whether by default or through the mod, the fact that it’s available on console makes a big difference. Well, to me anyway…It’s the little things…

    4. Scenery. Yes, I know I’ve mentioned it earlier but bear in mind that even on PC with mods I NEVER installed any graphical enhancements. Why? Coz my PC’s cpu simply couldn’t keep up with the loading of the higher settings and hi-res textures and I would constantly get slow downs, graphical artifacts, or crashes. And this is with an R9 280x in tow… So, coming from vanilla skyrim for 5 years to SE is, to a poorish gamer like me, a huge leap forward, and to my eyes, truly an incredible improvement. Basically I had the choice of either upgrading my motherboard and cpu to bring it on par with today’s standard, which would set me back at least R7500 (South African Rand), vs a now marked down Xbox One console for R 4000. That’s a difference of R 3500! Almost another console!? PC’s are cheaper? No! They’re not! Sure if you’re content with mediocre settings and basic gameplay, go ahead… But to have a proper PC that’s at least on par with the consoles, in this country, very easily works out to MORE money… So I “upgraded” my PC with an Xbox instead. Not the shiny new S because I don’t have and don’t plan to in the foreseeable future get a 4K TV. Too expensive.

    5. Mods! Sure they’re not as prolific as they are on PC currently but bear in mind that SE was JUST released and the list of mods available is growing at a staggering pace! I can see myself being happy with this for a long, long time still…at least untill Beth FINALLY decides to bring us Elder Scrolls 6….

    6. Convenience. PC is “stronger”, more flexible, more extensible, and yes, can be pretty convenient too if you add a controller, but it still does not come close to the convenience of a console. Nothing beats dropping into your bed at the end of a long day, grabbing the controller, pressing the button on the controller, and 2 minutes later you’re in Skyrim slaying dragons… Can you REALLY do that with a PC? In the 5 years I’ve been trying to set it up in such a way to make this possible I still have to deal with the keyboard, switch on the box separately, etc, etc…

    7. It’s a NEW Skyrim, a fresh base with most of the core improvements that mods gave to the previous pc version, already baked in by default! At 64bit. This means bigger mods, less crashes, smoother play…

So, conclusion: Even if you have Skyrim modded to hell on PC, and you’re getting SE for free on PC, it’s STILL worth getting the Xbox one version and pay for it! So go ahead, get your game on whichever way you please and forget about all this pointless “mine is better than yours” crap that gets spewed constantly. I’m a PC gamer myself, and have happily converted to console, but will still use my PC to record my gameplay and post it online – soon… ;)
