Slate Details Unveiled by HP CTO

Published

on

Here’s the first video I’ve seen of the HP Slate. I haven’t even watched the whole thing through yet, but our friend Phil McKinney always has the inside scoop on this kind of thing considering he is HP’s Personal Systems Group CTO. Obviously there’s going to be more details in this video than we got at CES 2010.

Enjoy.

I have a conference call with him tomorrow. Any questions you want me to ask?

Heh. Been working on it for five years, not coincidentally about the same time the HP TC1100 was discontinued.

    Aside from specs and pricing,

    – Capacitive only? Any plans to support WACOM EMR pens?

    – Are larger form factor with higher resolution/better graphics being considered?

    – Will this be limited using Intel Atom CPUs or are there plans for other CPU platforms (e.g., ARM, Core i3/i5/i7)?

    – Will this be limited to using Win7 or are other OS platforms being considered (i.e., WiMo7, Android, Linux, et.al.)?

    – This is obviously a consumer-oriented device but are there any plans on creating a ‘professional’ version of this device?

    – Is HP planning to develop a custom interface for the device much like the Touchsmart product lines in order to improve the user’s experience? How does HP plan on differentiating itself from it’s competition now that almost every vendor is offering some form of ‘slate’ or ‘tablet’ device?

What accessories will be available at launch? Is the battery removable? Will there be an extended battery available? Will there be/does it have an integrated kickstand or will there be some type of easel available? Will they be partnering with a 3G/4G carrier (reckon they will not say which one, but maybe they will reveal whether or not they are). Thanks.

I think that it will be a major challenge to make people take Windows seriously as a mobile platform. They almost need a subset, mini-os that runs on top of Windows and that could also run on WinMo7 so that development could run in parallel and take advantage of each platform. The apps are the key and I just don’t think that app devs will make $.99 apps for a windows platform. Maybe I am wrong. Does he think that the app base will be there?

Also, if this thing had RDP 7.0 on it, a GREAT use would be to run all of your normal programs on your desktop and then if you want to go to bed or to the next room or even out of the house, you could use this as a streaming remote back to the desktop. Now, THAT would be a seamless experience, plus when you come back to your desk, it is right where you left off on the tablet.

Lastly, can they name it something other than slate? That is so 90’s plus slate is heavy and breaks when dropped. Tablet or Pad is a much better name.

I noticed the interview focused a lot on media playback. I’m guessing HP made this device for content consumption rather than content creation. Therefore my questions are:

    1) Will I be able to use a stylus with this to take notes or draw? As a student, this pretty much makes or breaks my interest in the device.

    2) If the answer to question 1 is that I will not be able to use a stylus, then why should I buy this? I have a Zune which plays back my videos and music and surfs the Internet. I have a kindle which I can read books on. What’s

    2) If the device is just about media playback, why put a full fledged operating system like Windows 7 on it instead of a specialized media centric OS?

Well, to tell you the truth, I’m more interested in the changes that will differentiate the upcoming EliteBook 2740p from it’s predecessor (i.e., the 2730p).

I really hope this has a Wacom digitizer with pen input, but I doubt it.

Argh! Did everyone (including possibly Apple) talk to the same “customer group” or something? A media consumption and gaming device is not what I want or will pay for.

It’s still between Fujitsu (please update the Stylistic line with active digitizer *and* touch — my 5022 is getting old!), Motion, and Tablet Kiosk for my next slate tablet.

Maybe I’m just too old to imagine wanting something like a big iKindle reader/phone/nintendo DS.

    *sigh*

For me, the question to ask would be if they have any plans for a bigger, more powerful brother to this thing (core i5, 9+ hours on battery, full win7, and wacom pen+touch technology)? The screen size looks about right for education, but I’d happily accept larger ;)

Input, Input, Input!?! What is their mechanism for inputing web adresses, passwords, facebook comments??

Just echoing some of the comments up there but as an artist, I want to know if there will be a stylus? Will the slate have a capacitive or resistive screen and will it come in larger sizes? Even the 12″ tablet pcs are a tad too small for my liking (though I use a t4220)

Also, what kind of horsepower are we talking about here?

I don’t like slates…. Too much worry about the screen getting scratched or activating something in your purse…

Pretty obvious, on screen keyboard. Handwriting.

You can pretty much bet it will be resistive touch, they want it to be mainstream (i.e. cheap). Still can ink with that, but don’t expect fantastic results.

I guess it was asked before, but just in case….

Is HP planning on releasing different versions (size, processor, etc.) or just the one shown in the video?

As many others I would prefer something more focused on content creation than consumption and somthing that can actually make use of win7 as a full operating system…

So, NOT an active digitizer I assume? Thoughts?
