Sonastand: The Acoustic iPhone Stand Apple Should Have Designed

Published

on

Sonastand is the latest iPhone accessory Kickstarter project I’m supporting. The Sonastand is an acoustic stand for the iPhone that has the aethstetics you’d expect from Apple’s own designers and that makes the built-in speaker sound significantly louder.

The Sonastand may be for you if you find yourself cupping your hand to redirect the iPhone’s sound towards you when you can’t hear what’s coming out of the tiny speaker. The Sonastand is machine milled from a solid piece of aluminum. Rather than using a spearker to boost the volume, the Sonastand simply redirects sound coming from the iPhone’s internal speaker towards the listener. It comes in four sizes, allowing iPhone users to select a model that fits the iPhone 4 or 4S with or without a case. Kickstarter supporters will be able to choose between polished and anodized finishes.

You can pre-order the Sonastand over at Kickstarter.com.

Kickstarter is a platform for creators to raise money to launch projects and products. Project backers pledge suggested dollar amounts before the products go into production. Once goals are met, the creators spin up production and begin shipping early units out to backers. If the project fails to reach the goal the backers are not charged for their pledges. The creators of the Sonastand are trying to raise $20,000 by April 20.

As you can hear in this demo, the Sonastand really does work. It’s not going to replace big speakers, but it will suffice in a lot of situations.A $39 pledge doubles as a Sonastand pre-order. If you’re in the generous mood you can pledge $200 to the project to get a special edition engraved Sonastand and move to the front of the pre-order list. Find more info about the project over at Kickstarter.com.

Would have been nice to hear the so-called improvement rather than just viewing it on an oscilloscope.

There’s a demonstration video of the improvement on the Kickstarter page :)
