Sony to Refresh Xperia Z with Snapdragon 800 Processor

Following Samsung’s lead in refreshing its Galaxy S4 flagship with Qualcomm’s beefy Snapdragon 800 processor, it appears that Sony may be doing the same with its Xperia Z smartphone. Though Sony Mobile Communications hasn’t offered any information on an Xperia Z powered by the Snapdragon 800 chipset, famed leakster @EldarMurtazin had turned to Twitter to announce that he’s been testing an Xperia Z with the Snapdragon 800 processor, noting that “Its [sic] really fast.”

Sony had debuted the Xperia Z with its waterproofing design early this year at the Consumer Electronics Show, and the elegantly designed and slim smartphone won praises at the tech show. It’s one of the first consumer smartphones that comes with a waterproof case and a simple, stunning design. In the past, rugged or waterproof devices were often bigger, bulkier, or lacked the features worthy of a flagship phone, but the Xperia Z proved otherwise with a quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro, 5-inch 1080p HD display, and a 13-megapixel camera.

And while Murtazin has been accurate in the past, he’s also had a mixed track record with leaks so this information should be taken with a grain of salt. If he is accurate, the refreshed Xperia Z will definitely give Samsung’s Galaxy S4 Active on AT&T a run for its money. While the Galaxy S4 Active retains many of the high-end features of the Galaxy S4, including a Snapdragon 600 processor, it isn’t quite as powerful as this rumored Xperia Z. The Z bests the Active with an 800 processor and a more capable 13-megapixel Exmor RS sensor, versus the Active’s 8-megapixel resolution that’s a downgrade from the sensor on the non-waterproof Galaxy S4 model.

This model that’s being tested by Murtazin could also be the much rumored Honami smartphone, that’s been rumored to be called the Sony i1 phone. That device is said to have interchangeable lenses for the camera, though it’s unclear how accurate that rumor is.

The phone could potentially launch later this year in the fall, around the same time that the Apple iPhone 5S is slated to appear as well as the Samsung Galaxy Note 3.

I don’t see a reason of doing this when Xperia Z is performing way too better with Android 4.2.2 on board. The update has gone live and has made Xperia Z a quality device.
