Sony Xperia Z Video Highlights Design & Features

Published

on

At CES Sony introduced its new flagship smartphone, the Sony Xperia Z, and a new video details many of the features of the phone.

The Sony Xperia Z is Sony’s first smartphone with a 5-inch 1080p display, and one of only a few phones with such a high resolution display. Like the HTC DROID DNA, another recent phone with a 1080p display, the Xperia Z uses the quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro to power the large display.

The Xperia Z has a distinct Sony style with tempered glass on both the front and back of the smartphone. Despite the glass front and back, Sony was able to make the Xperia Z both water-resistant and dust-resistant, which is rare on high-end smartphones without some sort of protective case.

The Sony Xperia Z also includes a 13MP rear-facing camera that’s one of the first cameras on a smartphone that can shoot HDR video in real-time. The camera can also shoot 1080p video which users can view in full resolution on the 5-inch display as they shoot the video.

Like other Sony smartphones, the Xperia Z also supports PlayStation Mobile, which means it has access to some exclusive PlayStation-branded games that not all smartphones can play.

Sony Xperia Z award 2

The Xperia Z won our Best Smartphone award for CES 2013.

The Sony Xperia Z compares favorably to other smartphones of its size such as the HTC DROID DNA and the Samsung Galaxy Note 2. The Sony smartphone has similar features to the DNA, but lacks some of the features of the Note 2 such as the ability to open two apps at once and the stylus support.

Sony hasn’t announced a U.S. release date for the Xperia Z yet, though hopefully it will come to a U.S. sometime in the near future. The phone will likely release in Europe sometime in February.

Even without a release date, the Sony Xperia Z won the Gotta Be Mobile award for Best Smartphone of CES 2013.

What’s up with the lack of a US release date? These companies need to learn from Apple and be able to release their product promptly after announcement.
