Sprint, Apple Working to Solve iPhone 4S Speed Issues

Published

on

In an interview with CNET today, Sprint revealed that it is working with Apple in an effort to get to the bottom of connection issues that have been plaguing some iPhone 4S devices on Sprint’s 3G network. The carrier is assuring iPhone 4S owners that it is taking the problem seriously but that there is nothing to report yet in terms of a solution and that a diagnosis is being complicated because the issue is hard to replicate.

Sprint iPhone 4S owners have been clamoring about slow 3G data speeds on Sprint’s message boards since the iPhone 4S launched in mid-October. Sprint’s message boards are currently flooded with complaints.

This is the first time that Sprint has openly admitted the problem.

iPhone 4S

At the end of October, Sprint denied that its version of the iPhone 4S had an issue, even when reports surfaced that it was working with Apple in an attempt to get to the bottom of the slow data speeds.

Turns out, that’s exactly what the two companies have been doing.

Our iPhone 4S speed tests show that the Sprint model, at least in San Francisco, is a whole lot slower than the models on AT&T and Verizon. We found that the AT&T iPhone 4S has the fastest 3G speeds of the group and it scored 3.87 Mbps in the download test. Verizon checked in at 2.22 Mbps while Sprint produced a lousy 1.09 Mbps.

Sprint says that only a single digit percentage of iPhone 4S owners are experiencing the speed issues.

How have your data speeds been, Sprint iPhone 4S owners?

I’d be happy if I could get 1mbps down on Sprint! Hell I’d even be happy with 500kbps!!! I average less than that!

My data speed have been consistantly a maximum of 0.100 Mbps download, with a low of 0.020 Mbps down. Smoke signals are faster.  This deserves a class action law suit for damages.

my bb pearl was faster than my 4s, consistent .01-.01 mbps, pathetic, had the evo on its luanch but didnt like the battery usage, went next with nexux s and the bb bold 9930 but i just couldnt get used to a big phone, 4s is perfect size and i knew it before i bought it that it had no 4g but I’ve always wanted an iphone for 11 years with sprint, now i get one and the only time its worth browsing is on wifi. hope this gets resolved quickly, maybe thats why they took $10 off my first bill after complaining? (data charge)

      Johnny,

I completely understand how you feel, I’m approaching 7 years myself with Sprint and have no intentions of leaving. I too, being a die hard Apple fan have been waiting for an iPhone on Sprint since it launched in 2007… So I hope this issue gets resolved as quickly. In the last two years, I’ve gone thru two Palms, a Moment, a Hero, and just retired My EVO 4G. The battery life and constant lag on the EVO made me insane. But it saddens me to FINALLY have the phone I want, and see it suffer from speed like this, especially when I know all that Sprints invested in their Network… I guess time will tell.

Just  got 3 iphone 4s’  and all 3 suffer from the slow speed. while at the store buying my phones, i saw over 20 people come in returing equipment…… Sprint wasnt up front about the speed issue to begin with, and i’d say the speed issue is one that is accrost the bord…. look at the numbers of complaints on the message boards, this is not an issue that that affects 1%of users… At&t did this crap last year with they flashed all thier tower hardware in july and it ruined hspa+ uploads on ALL phones, At&t claimed this affected only 2% of users…. really?  iphones only accounrted for 2% of thier network? that statement was bull crap just like sprints claim is a load of crap.

I’m tending to believe that its a software issue with the 4s, i have friends with evos, epics, nexus s, and their speeds are up to par, so heres to a quick patch(gulp) do your stuff apple and sprint!

Sprint offered me a $50 credit and said they could continue concessions until the issue was solved… maybe if everyone hit them up for $50 the priority level would increase… of course I’m only 3 days on their system so they have a whole lot more to lose.

i dont believe this is a software issue, but is a 3g issue… it seems that android phones that turn off thier 4g and revert back to 3g suffer from the same speeds that the iphone 4s is seeing…. so my guess is that sprint has gutted it;s 3g network and now the performance stincks…

It has been horrible! I have been calling them for over a month to complain about the no data message I get when trying to access the internet. Apple even gave me another phone today was the first time sdprint admitted it was Sprint. Every time I call them, I’m on the phone at least an hour with them and they knew the problem was Sprint. I wasat a conference this week and I wasnot able to usemy data plan at all. So I asked different iPhone or i pad users who was there carrier and nonoe of them had sorint who were able to use their phones. I want money back and I want to transfer the apple care to the new phone with att. Then sprint had the nerve to charge an extra 10 fee for the data plan. I was already with sprint and had a blackberry which work better than this.

Oh let me add I was on the phone one hour and half when they said I could get out my contract then the phone hung up. U think they would have been kind enough to call me back. Hell no! I am so pissed!

Spent an hour and a half on the phone with customer service. I got disconnected and no one called me back.
I called again and was assured I would be taken care of and I am still waiting.
Hoping to hear back from the tomorrow.

I live in Asheboro North Carolina. I had an iPhone 4 through AT&T( had no problems besides going over in data), and switched to Sprint because of the unlimited plan. Once I got the iPhone 4S I noticed the slow and laggy network uploads, and downloads. It’s HORRIBLE! I’m locked into a two year contract. I’m hoping the service will be fixed ASAP!
