Sprint HTC EVO 3D Burning Up?

Published

on

Hot sales of the HTC EVO 3D isn’t Sprint’s only problem as the carrier is trying to keep its store shelves stocked with the wildly popular smartphone successor to the original HTC EVO 4G. Owners of the Sprint HTC EVO 3D on various forums are reporting overheating issues related to the latest dual-core Snapdragon smartphone. Accroding to a number of users who have contacted Sprint for support, the issue is a known issue though it’s unclear if the issue is a result of software that still needs to be optimized or if it’s due to some hardware glitches. If it’s a software issue, it would be a fixable issue through a future update, though it’s unclear what implication a hardware defect would be for the flagship smartphone for Sprint’s Now Network as it would probably require users to send in their devices for service or replacement.

Some users are noticing the overheating issue while recharging the smartphone. One user noted that his smartphone was charging at a higher voltage level than normal. Other users have reported heat issues while the phone is out and about during normal daily use. Another heat-related issue may be due to using the camera or running the camera app in the background. I’ve noticed that while utilizing the camera for 3D image capture or video encoding, the phone began to heat up quickly. To date, I haven’t noticed any heat issues while charging, though the device does get warmer than usual on occasion while I am using it in my daily routine away from the charger.

For now, Sprint is replacing known and affected units. If you’re suffering from overheating EVO 3D units, you may want to get in touch with Sprint customer care or visit your nearest Sprint store to see if you can get a replacement.

The HTC EVO 3D is among the most advanced smartphones on the market today, boasting a glasses-free parallax barrier display technology with a 4.3-inch qHD high resolution touchscreen, a dual-core 1.2 GHz Snapdragon processor with Adreno graphics, dual-rear-5-megapixel cameras for 3D image capture and 720p 3D or 2D video encoding, front-facing camera, 4G WiMax support with a multi-mode 3G CDMA radio, and the latest version of HTC Sense on top of Android 2.3 Gingerbread. The handset was originally announced at CTIA earlier this Spring and is the successor to the HTC EVO 4G released a year ago on the Now Network.

Ive been burning this thing up since I purchased it without any problems. At least 50 cycles of charge with no more heat than original Evo. Turn the BRIGHTNESS down from 110%.

Matthew I agree people plays with there phones while charging and that does raise the heat of the phone and like you said lower the brightness my brightness is at factory default setting.I tried different senerio if you are using the phone while on the charge it feels like its burning and the screen also create heat,as your using it the battery heats up.Please, let it finish charge before playing with the phone this will reduce the heat that its producing.

Mine overheated the day I got it, and I figured it was due to the low signal where I was at the time. I’ve been monitoring it since, and it hasn’t done it again…after reading this article though I may try to get a replacement.

Is evo 3d that much noticably better then evo 4g? Is it worth purchasing even w.out upgrade?

Hi, this is my second evo 3d after having to change it since the first one I received was defective. Not only did it overheat but the battery depleted quickly. Then, after a few days, lines appeared across the screen. However, this new one isn’t perfect either because it was overheating as well. It would also freeze and shut off and turn on on its own mostly when the phone got too hot ( Maybe the heat was the reason for it shutting off). So you could imagine how disappointed and frustrated I was thinking that I would have to exchange it or return it for good. I went back to the sprint store with intention to exchange it, but they did a hard reset and the phone started performing how it should with the exception that it still heats up.

I am afraid it is just a quirk of the phone.  It still doesn’t get as hot as my old Samsung clamshell freebie I got years ago on upgrade, but the 3VO is closer to it than any other phone I’ve owned.  I can confirm the camera-caused overheating issue, to run it in the background drains the battery fast and makes it hot!  It’s not a “hardware” issue per se, any app that pulls a large power drain will heat up the battery, period.  (What do you think that will mean for any extended life battery?)  The apps will simply have to be optimized for it, and that is a tall order.  Maybe next year’s EVO will solve the problem, maybe not.  Should I trade it in for last year’s EVO ($30 at Radio Shack) and get my money back?  To quote Mike Myers… “Mmmmmmaaayyyybee!”
(PS: if RIM would just get smart and adopt Flash, BB would be back in the game again!)

I had a different problem with EVO 3D. My phone was turning off on it’s own and woudn’t turn on untill I take out the battery and replace it back. It was happening randomly..took back the device after 2 days and store technician tested for few hours…still the same problem..at last they gave me another new phone..so far no problems..overall I like this Phone.

My 3vo was running hot and the screen went blank. Weird thing is the phone turned on again and all the bottom 4 buttons vibrated worked and the sound effect were on but the screen stayed dark. Took it to sprint and the guy says it happens and i just need to do a battery pull. I thought I bought a HTC phone but i guess its still my blackberry all over again.

This article makes it sound like everyone has this problem. There may be some bad apples just make sure they work well and exchange it if it dosen’t. Again, few have this problem and the few that do ppl just exchange them out. My EVO 3D is wonderful! :)

I took the battery off and put it back on and the camera seemed to start getting very hot so therefore i took it out again and when i put it back on the HTC logo appeared but it would vibrate and after like 40-50 seconds it would turn off and then do the same thing over and over can someone help me ?

I’ve gone through 3 Evo 3D’s now and can verify that overheating is not a rare issue.  All 3 had this problem to one degree or another.  The real problem I’ve found is that once they do overheat, they seem to get very unstable afterwards.  I replaced one through Sprint, then had to RMA one through HTC.  They sent me a refurb back which worked perfectly for about 2 months.  Then I went on a trip and used it as a GPS in my rental car (plugged in during) for about 1.5hrs.  I noticed it got SO hot I could barely touch the thing!  Stopped using it as GPS once realizing it was overheating, but too late….damage was done.  Starting that day it began crashing, freezing, hanging, randomly rebooting (whether I’m in the middle of using it or it’s sitting in sleep state) then getting hung on reboot.  Buttons don’t work so I have to yank the battery every time to reboot.  This phone worked perfectly for nearly 2 months up until the day it overheated and then immediately started acting just like the other 2…very unstable.  Tell me this isn’t a design problem with the phone?  HTC really should fix it and then warranty all of them (for fire danger if nothing else!).

Huge glitch in the screen. Selects applications and so on randomly and all of a sudden won’t let me select anything. Very dissatisfied with this phone. Would be happier if customer service would actually do something about it to keep customers happy.

my phone also heated up many times. sometimes when charging there where a couple of times it was in my pocket and next thing i know my leg was burning the phone gets so hot u cant hold it. i will be getting my new one in a couple of days since now my screen does not come on but it still works by touch.  And sprints customer service has much to be desired from.
