Sprint Outlines Fixes for Epic 4G Android 2.2 Update Issues

Published

on

With the Samsung Epic 4G, a 3G/4G multi-mode Android Galaxy S variant for the Sprint Now Network, having just received its Android 2.2 upgrade from Android 2.1, some users are reporting that they are experiencing calendar synchronization, connectivity, and SD card problems. If you have the Epic 4G and are experiencing any of those issues after the upgrade to Android 2.2, the following procedures have been advised in the Sprint community forums:

UPDATE 1: SD Card Index

If you are experiencing issues with the Camera, Media Player, Gallery, or SD card, refresh your SD Card Index following the steps below and power cycle your device to ensure the refresh takes effect:

Menu->Settings->Applications->Manage Applications->Select All->Scroll down to Media Storage->Select Clear Data.

Update 2: Calendar sync

(solution from Dennis Staub…thanks!)

MENU>SETTINGS>APPLICATIONS>MANAGE APPLICATIONS

Select “All” in the grouping at the top and then select “Calendar” then under “Storage” select “Clear data”.

Then go back to the App list and select “Calendar Storage” and do the same. Then open your Calendar then

MENU>SETTINGS>CALENDAR  SYNC>Manage Accounts(Select your account) then un-check it, then  re-check it then go back to the calendar and check to see if the  appointments have sync’d for you.

It is also advisable that users perform a full wipe, or hard reset of their smartphones after performing the upgrade. To do a full wipe, from the main home screen, hit the Menu button, go to Settings, and then Privacy Settings. Select Factory Data Reset after that.

After Sprint has received some customer service calls regarding problems with the update, the carrier has temporarily suspended the roll-out for now.

I updated mine yesterday with the manual update at samsung. the only issue i have is that while using the camera if I try to use sport mode it forces me to cancel the camera app. So far everything else works great that was not working with 2.1 like my GPS, I can move my apps to my SD card, I have Flash 10.1 – haven’t tried tethering yet and probably wont because I don’t need it. Anyway my phone works better than it did before so I happy with that but there’s still no excuse for it to be buggy considering the amount of time that was spent producing the upgrade – shame on Sprint/Samsung/Google. If I have any major issues I will switch back to 2.1 but for now I’m loving my phone. Hope sprint fixes the glitches soon.

Try the upside-down calibration trick. Basically, hold your phone UP on the UNDERSIDE of a horizontal surface, so that the back cover of the phone is pointing straight up and the screen is facing straight down (use the top of a door way, underside of a table, etc). Then Settings -> Display -> Horizontal Calibration, and then hit the “Calibrate” button.

And no, this is not a joke, you can look it up. It worked great for me. It also fixed my compass.

I have been having camera problems with very poor video camera quality and force close with sports scene mode. I tried Update 1 mentioned in the article and it had no effect on either issue. I also tried formatting a new SD card and performing a Hard Reset prior to this which didn’t help. :(

Yeah thanks for the handy update… it erased all my photos stored in my gallery and downloaded songs and ringtones. Maybe it should start with Step 1: back up your phone Step 2: erase all memory.

    02/26/2011 at 8:39 pm

    Michaelfb68,

You are the idiot. Backing up your phone is easy. Plug in the USB to computer and backup SD card. Google should have all your contacts and mail if you are doing it right. Upgrading anything including Windows 7 should be a clean install as thats the safest route to go.

If you can’t maintain your phone and want to spend time bitching and whining on websites, go buy a iphone idiot!

Pro Tip: You’re missing the point. This is supposed to be a consumer communications device, and that’s who they’re marketing it to. They’re not selling it as a computer. You shouldn’t have to back up every time they (if they ever) supply an update, that’s not acceptable in a communications device.

You inadvertently gave the game away with your last sentence. I personally don’t own one, but this kind of stuff is why the iPhone is the driver in this market.

I decided to go ahead and update my phone off the Samsung website. I followed the instructions as closely as I could. So far everything seems to be in order. The difference that I’ve noticed so far is the orientation is very sensitive to how you handle the phone. I thought it was weird that even holding the phone upside down the orientation changes. Kind of funny. I was a little nervous about the updating process but I got tired of waiting on Sprint.

My first step was to back up all my videos and text messages, etc. I didn’t know how I was going to do that since I never did that before. I thought I would end up losing everything. But I went to the market and looked up back up programs and found a free one. After I backed up my data and apps, I proceeded to the update process. It was very easy. On top of that, all my stuff I had backed up was already there. So I don’t know if I backed it up right or if I needed to back it up in the first place.

One thing I don’t really like is the GPS being on when I want to take a picture. Don’t see the point. Plus it’s kind of like invading privacy. If you go to Google navigation and put in your address it can actually show a picture of your house! Freaked me out. Showed my car in the driveway. WTF?!?!

Anyway, the update is cool. Nothing to scream about. Except I can look at Xtube! The browser works like a pc browser. The music player is hot. Everything is pretty much the same.

    Sorry for the long post.

I updated yesterday from the samsung website and initially had no issues, but now notice no paid apps I purchase from the market will download (stuck at ‘authorizing purchase’) and the phone will seriously overheat if I’m on a call or use extensive data while it’s plugged in. This is an absolute disgrace. We were promised froyo by the end of 2010, it gets postponed to late february, and when it coms out it’s stil buggy enough that I gets recalled? That’s disgustingly unacceptable.

I haven’t heard anyone complaining about the problem I’m having since the 2.2 update. Besides having the same camera and gallery problems as everyone else, I’m also having major issues with text messages. A few, not all, texts I will receive hours and hours later. And since they show up in normal chronological order, you never see them because they are not at the bottom of the screen. So frustrating… every once in a while I’ll hear my phone ring, meaning I got a text, but there is no notification about the text. This is because it was an old text that just showed up. So good luck trying to find that freakin text. Anybody else heard of this problem yet? What the heck to do I do about this one?

I’m getting so tired of waiting on Sprint. I want to upgrade to Android 2.2 now. Have any of you epic owners noticed that your landscape keyboard drops keys? It’s really annoying, & I hope they fix it soon.

    03/25/2011 at 6:47 pm

I have not seen anything addressing this issue, but why are the text messages showing up in my call log? I end up with a bazillion logs in my call log that are all text messages. This is very frustrating. The only way I have found to turn the text messages off is to show only incoming or outgoing calls. Why cant it just be the normal call log like it was before and no text messages at all? I am also now having problems signing in to my yahoo mail and messanger accounts.

How do you enlarge the font in text messaging?

  16. Svtlek

    03/27/2011 at 5:25 pm

My Select text is gone and the copy and paste feature in the web is gone now too. and I cannot remove the messing app in the toolbar unless I switch id’s to launcher pro, but then all the widgets are different. I may go back to 2.1 if they dont get another update out soon.

    03/28/2011 at 11:27 pm

I did the Epic update on 03/26/11 & immediately knew I was in trouble. There seem to be more bugs than solutions in this update: Connectivity, Bluetooth staying synced, Keys not responding, Slow response all the way around, and how juvenile are the new text ‘bubbles’-so much for professionalism…and you can’t undo the update! I am sadly disappointed.

    SOFTWARE GLITCH
    ISSUES

    All these problems
happened in conjunction with the update. When the phone is using old software
(I have Sprint reinstall it), I have no issues.

Phone no longer mounts to computer for file transfer. I have
successfully installed the drivers over in my computer. It never works.

When browsing internet sometimes have to click a link
repeatedly before it goes to the link. 3, 4, 5, 6 times.

Browser crashes at least once every other day. Unpredictable
    when .

Phone has overheated on me twice (couldn’t charge). It never
    overheated before

Slower loading home screen. Slower in general and lags.
    15-20% slower.

Web page rendering with scrolling & zoom is glitchy.

Phone auto rotates (in the phone menu) even though I specify not to.

Message notification doesn’t always sound … doesn’t sound correctly
    sometimes. Is cut off.

    Call ring tone malfunctions sometimes.

Vibration occurs when phone turns off & when apps crash. Vibration is
    turned off.

Email (like with live mail) takes much longer to load.
Initial software worked fine with live mail. New software does not delete emails
like it did before update. Yes I specify delete from server.

Intermittent problem that is often: hit messages soft key
& it takes me into some random application.

Screen unlock pattern malfunctions, have to hit home button  repeatedly to clear whatever is messing it
up. Then I can enter my pattern.

Apps that I never had an issue with crashing are now
    crashing and doing force closes.

    USABILITY ISSUES

(I don’t know what Samsung was thinking…do they use their
    own software???!!!)

    WORST: No longer
have log of all calls. No option to see all calls. I NEED to be able to see all
calls. I use this phone for calls and business. I don’t want to see a log of ALL
MESSAGES + CALLS. This is a horrible change.
I have to scroll through a tons of messages to find phone calls?! PLEASE
CHANGE THIS BACK. There’s no option to see ALL calls. This is awful. I’m
considering turning off messaging just so I can avoid this crap.

No option to see all message threads. Have to keep hitting
back to get to home screen then hit messages until all message threads are
    displayed.

Turning vibration on is a pain in the ass. Would just like
to have vibration as the lowest before all sounds off.

Every single time I add an app I have to re order the list
alphabetically and save. Should be alphabetical by default & with option to
    reorder.

Do not like new message format.

Since getting the 2.2.1 upgrade (downgrade?) on my Samsung Fascinate Galaxy S, I’ve had problems with:

    1) voice commands – the volume for the Nuance voice app was reduced to lowest possible setting, barely audible – unusable.
SOLUTIUON download free app AudioManager, and it has a “voice call volume” setting that is NO where to be found in the 2.2 settings.  It showed 2.2.1 had set the volume to 0.

    2) Upgrade also changed my swype setting to no longer insert a space between words.

SOLUTION – go to swype setting and re-enable “auto spacing”.

    3) the phone will fail to connect to the blue tooth ear piece (playtronics).  It shows it as synched, and the ear piece says it is connected to phone 1 when I turn it on, but no audio in either ear piece or phone itself.  (usually happens if I answer a call, before I engage / turn on blue tooth)
SOLUTION – have to reboot the phone to get it to work again (for a while) and leave blue tooth always on, and quick power up ear piece before answering a call.

    4) photo gallery fails to show some folders when first opened.  have to move around, drill down into folders shown, then when returning, the other folders will often show up.  Also deleted pictures would not go away.
    (no solution so far)

    5) phone hangs if trying to stop / back out of an accidently started app too soon.  ie: hit something, start hitting back, hangs, sometimes for minutes.  Cant even reboot, just have to wait it out.

Sprint has just committed phone service suicide. If this new update doesn’t put them out of business, i don’t know what will. My epic touch worked flawlessly until the update. Now nothing works and my battery only lasts 3 hours. Talked to Sprint and of course they say a fix will come in a few weeks. Hahahahaha….yeah, lets all do without our phones for a few weeks and hope they can fix it. How dumb can they be to roll out an update without testing it. That’s why Sprint will be gone in six months.
