At we march further in 2013, there are some big names already on the horizon including the Samsung Galaxy S4, HTC M7 and iPhone 6. There are also some newcomers, thanks to CES 2013, including the upcoming Sony Xperia Z. However, none of those phones has an official release date in the United States leaving those looking for a smartphone this very moment wondering about their options. In particular, those looking for a new phone on AT&T might be weighing their options even more heavily now that CES 2013 has ended. Luckily, there are some great smartphones available on AT&T right at this moment.

Like it did for Verizon, 2012 proved very fruitful for AT&T in terms of 4G LTE coverage and in terms of devices. First, the former saw a huge increase in coverage with AT&T’s 4G LTE network now covering well over 100 markets in the United States. It’s still well-behind Verizon which boasts over 400 markets in the U.S., but 2012 was a good start for Ma Bell and we should see the carrier ramp up coverage of its high-speed data network in the months ahead.

Additionally, 2012 saw the launch of several high-end smartphones on AT&T’s 4G LTE network which included a nice mixture of iOS, Android and Windows Phone. In fact, AT&T has one of the better selections when it comes to smartphones in the United States.

In the past few months, we’ve seen AT&T launch a number of new high-end smartphones for customers to choose from, several of which that should age well into 2013. That doesn’t mean that they won’t be replaced, but it does mean that they will serve customers well throughout a two year contract.

Because AT&T’s smartphone lineup is so vast, it’s difficult to wade through all of the options to find the best of the best. Fortunately, we’ve done the leg work already. Here now are what we think are the five best smartphones on AT&T for the month of January, 2013.

With its beautiful 4-inch Retina Display, high-quality industrial design, fantastic rear camera, and iOS 6 software, the iPhone 5 is truly one of the best smartphones, not just on AT&T, but on the smartphone market as a whole.

The iPhone 5 remains with its $199.99 starting price point, that nets a 16GB model, and likely will until the iPhone 6 arrives, potentially as soon as this summer.
