We struggled here. The Moto X, Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and OnePlus One are all solid options but ultimately, we think the LG G2 gives you the biggest bang for your buck.
If you're looking at the Nexus 5, you're probably looking for a cheap device with a minimal UI. The LG G2, last year's flagship, sports a dirt cheap price tag and LG's UI which is far less intrusive than Samsung's or HTC's. Keep in mind, the LG G2 is not even a year old yet. It remains one of the best Android smartphones on the planet and worth a look from prospective Nexus 5 users.
