Toshiba Thrive Debuting with Power Problems, Bugs

Published

on

Toshiba, which is no stranger to the tablet PC market, is showing its relative inexperience with the Android tablet market. The outfit had debuted its Toshiba Thrive Android Honeycomb tablet a few weeks ago, and already a number of issues are being reported by end-users.

Both early issues being reported are related to power. Specifically, the Thrive can enter an endless slumber when it’s hibernating. If the tablet is put to sleep, it won’t come on without a hard reset. A second issue related to power suggests that the Thrive will turn itself on randomly.

It’s unclear if these issues are due to the internal hardware wiring, or if it’s related to software, which can be remedied with an over-the-air software update.

Right now, though, with the state of tablet and hardware, it seems that everyone of us are beta testers with un-finished hardware in one way or another, meaning that the Thrive isn’t the only tablet that ships with issue. Honeycomb’s debut tablet, the Xoom by Motorola, although was free from most glitches, had its own issues. That tablet over-promised on its iOS-killer features, such as Adobe Flash support, storage card support, and 4G LTE; Flash was only delivered after the tablet shipped via a software download, the storage card is still yet to be enabled on the mobile broadband-enabled Xoom from Verizon Wireless, and the 4G LTE modem upgrade is still yet to be seen. The PlayBook from Research in Motion, in another example, ships without a suite of apps to manage contacts, calendars, and email, and is lacking in support for running Android apps despite promise from RIM in supporting apps made for competing tablets.

The Toshiba Thrive is awesome. Had it for a week now and I can’t get over how much better this was than my experience with the Asus Transformer (shoddy construction). I got the 8 GB model for $429 on Amazon with free 2 day shipping and put in a 32 GB SDHC card I picked up on eBay for $10 and a 32 GB mini flash drive that I picked up for $15, for a total of 72 GB of storage for $450. The battery life is awesome and I haven’t had any issues like what have been discussed in the article (knock on wood).

In fact it is not clear whether the problems related to an aspect of hardware or software any inconvenience. In the latter case, the manufacturer could easily intervene with a special update to download over-the-air, according to some rumors, Toshiba would already be working on a fix. https://desktophelp.in/forums/thread-988.html
