UMPC gaming review at Ars Technica

Published

on

Icewind_dale_1_box_shotJon Stokes continues his series of articles at Ars Technica looking at old-school RPG gaming on his Samsung Q1UP UMPC (which he still calls a Tablet PC), getting down to the nitty-gritty: reviews of his actual gameplay experience.

In this installment, he profiles five games he’s played on his UMPC – Icewind Dale, Icewind Dale II, Planescape: Torment, Temple of Elemental Evil, and Europa Universalis III. There are ups and downs on each one, but for the most part, his experience has been very positive.

Conclusions

The above games are the ones that I’ve spent some playtime with, and I’m pretty pleased overall with how they’re working out (except for EUIII). Note that most of what I’ve said above about the Infinity Engine games will apply to Baldur’s Gate 1 and 2, both of which I’ve played in the past (I completed only BG1), and which I probably won’t add to the list because they’re second edition.

Anyone following Jon’s example and giving old-school games a go-round on their UMPCs? We’d love to hear from you.

I’ve played Monkey Island 3 on my Fujitsu u810 5″ screen.
It was more of a challenge to get the game to play via CD emulator and processor slow down utility, but replaying the game on the small screen was kinda fun. Some of the inventory icons were so small, it was hard to recognize them though.

I play the Hoyle games on my tablet pc. It was like these game were ment for a pen.

I tested Half-Life 2, World of Warcraft, Sims 2, Warcraft 3, and Starcraft on my Samsung Q1UP so far.
Other than Half-Life 2 (loading time), other games actually worked fine. Starcraft even supports the resistive touch capability so, technically, you don’t need your keyboard and mouse to play the game, which I don’t recommend on multiplayer. I’m pretty impressed with what these tiny UMPCs can do in terms of gaming.

I am surprised to see ToEE, the game I worked on, and to see them label it retro, makes me feel a bit old :P.
