Verizon 4G LTE iPad Setup Issues Frustrate and Confuse

Published

on

The new iPad is on sale today, and for the first time you can buy a 4G LTE iPad on Verizon or AT&T.

If you picked up the AT&T 4G LTE iPad this morning you could easily move your existing iPad account over by logging in to your existing AT&T account, but on the Verizon 4G LTE iPad it’s a different story.

We purchased a 4G LTE iPad on Verizon and AT&T to bring you speed tests, but when we tried to activate our new iPad with Verizon 4G LTE we ran into trouble.

Update: Verizon Responds with Tips Below

Verizon 4G LTE iPad SetupXavier Lanier tried to connect his new iPad with Verizon 4G LTE to his account, to replace his 3G iPad, but got the error; “Email account already in use”

As it turns out, Verizon wasn’t planning on upgraders wanting to essentially replace their 3G iPad with the new iPad 4G LTE. Apple Store employees at his local Apple Store have not been trained on how to handle this situation, which means that they had to call in to Verizon to get his new iPad setup. According to the phone rep, this has happened all day.

If you get your new iPad with Verizon 4G LTE delivered today, you may get the same, “Email account already in Use” error. This means you need to call Verizon, which can easily turn into a 45 minute process.

You’ll need to have the following information available;

  • IMEI
  • CC # associated w/ old account
  • new iPad serial number
  • New iPad SIM card number (which means you’ll need to pop it out)

Alternatively, you can take your new iPad to a local Verizon store with the information on hand, and they can help you out.

Update: Verizon shares the following tips, with GottaBeMobile.com

  • Any iPad 2 customer who wants to move their data plan to the new iPad should call Verzion Wireless Prepaid Customer Care at 1-800-768-8419
  • Customers will need the mobile number on their iPad 2 and be able to verify they are the account owners. The current data plan will carry over to the new device and the new 4G data plan month of service will start when there is less than 25 MB remaining on the old plan or when the old plan reaches its expiration date whichever comes first.
  • The customers’ credit card will be charged for the new month of service and it will auto-renew one month from that date

Additionally, the process should be faster and easier now that the initial launch rush is over.

The AT&T 4G LTE iPad was much easier to set up, asking for previous account information and starting up. It looks like AT&T was better prepared for the new iPad launch.

Have you had any trouble setting up your new iPad?

You can easily get around this by changing the email address associated with the iPad 2 to some other address.  Your primary email address can then be used on the 4G device.  I blogged about this at helpmeusetech.com.

I did mine and it was really easy. I logged into Verizonwireless.com and went to My Verizon>activate or change devices, entered my IMEI and then chose a plan. Then you have to enter the SIM ID. Finally, go to settings>cellular data, then click activate.

    Voila!

I’m not able to log into Verizon wireless.com with my iPad account info… When I attempt to register it says I have to manage the account through the devices setting.

The phone number is transposed in the article above. It’s 786, not 768
