10 Things to Know About the Verizon Galaxy S6 Release

Published

on

The start of the US Samsung Galaxy S6 release date is confirmed for April 10th and pre-orders are now live for some carriers ahead of its release date. With that in mind, we want to take a look at the most important things we think Verizon Galaxy S6 buyers need to know ahead of the Verizon Galaxy S6 release date for the regular model and Galaxy S6 Edge.

On March 1st, Samsung announced the all new Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge. These two flagships replace the Samsung Galaxy S5 and join the Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note Edge in Samsung’s fight against top Android rivals and Apple’s iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. Samsung’s new devices are tempting propositions and many buyers in the United States have their eyes on them.

Most US carriers have confirmed the most important Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge release details including the release date, colors, storage, pre-orders, and price. Verizon isn’t like most carriers though.

While the carrier was quick to confirm both the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge and a pre-order date for both, the Verizon Galaxy S6 release is still a bit of a mystery as we approach the start of April and the start of Verizon Galaxy S6 pre-orders.

With that in mind, we want to take a look at the most important things to know about the Verizon Galaxy S6 release date and some of the smaller details that we think you need to be aware of as we march closer to the Verizon Galaxy S6 release.

Verizon Galaxy S6 Pre-Orders Start This Week

This is a public service announcement. Reminder, Verizon Galaxy S6 pre-orders start this week at Verizon, April 1st to be exact. Verizon will be taking pre-orders in its physical retail locations and it will also be taking them through its online portal. We probably won’t see a complete sell out, we haven’t seen one yet, so you should be able to find one online or in store on day one.

Do Not Buy the Galaxy S6 Off-Contract at Best Buy

Best Buy says that it currently is taking Verizon Galaxy S6 pre-orders in stores right now. We imagine that this in-store pre-order will only last until April 1st. At that point, we’d expect Best Buy to start taking online Verizon Galaxy S6 pre-orders as well. There are a few things to know if you’re planning to go this route.

Galaxy S6 Color Options - 10

First off, Best Buy is charging an arm and a leg for the Galaxy S6 off-contract. The base model, the 32GB variant, is going to run you $750 off-contract. A brand new 32GB Galaxy S6 off-contract through Verizon is only $600, a difference of $150 for those not counting. That pretty much amounts to highway robbery on Best Buy’s part. Do not buy the Verizon Galaxy S6 or Galaxy S6 Edge off-contract there unless you have a gift card or you’re sitting on heaps of points.

It’s also worth mentioning that Best Buy is charging more per month on Verizon’s Edge plan. For instance, the 32GB Galaxy S6 is $24.99 per month for 24 months on Verizon. On Best Buy, it’s $26.21. Keep that in mind.

Verizon Edge vs. Two Year Contract

We put together a comparison that highlights the differences between Verizon Edge and a new two year contract. We highly recommend taking a look at that if you’re not sure how to buy the Galaxy S6 or Galaxy S6 Edge.

Amazon Galaxy S6 Pre-Orders

Amazon is taking early pre-orders for the AT&T and Sprint Galaxy S6 models and there’s a very good chance that it will have the Verizon Galaxy S6 in stock ahead of its unannounced release date. The retailer isn’t offering any discounts ahead of time but it’s also not overcharging like Best Buy is. Something to know if you don’t want to order from Verizon.

Verizon Will Carry the Gold Galaxy S6

Verizon announced today that it will indeed have the gold Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge models in addition to the white and black Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge variants.

As far as we can tell, the gold models will be released alongside the two other colors. No word yet on the green or blue Galaxy S6 variants and it’s possible that those will arrive much later in the year, if they arrive at all.

Verizon Galaxy S6 Release Date Unknown

The Verizon Galaxy S6 release date is still unknown. While we have a pre-order date, we don’t have a specific release date. It’s a bit weird but Verizon is a weird carrier.

We should see the Verizon Galaxy S6 release date emerge, at the latest, on April 1st. Verizon will almost certainly give a ship by date to those that pre-order. We’re expecting a date in and around April 10th but there’s no guarantee. Verizon’s been known to push release dates though we would not expect to see a date much later than April 10th if it does decide to space its release out.

Mail-in Rebate Fun

Quick note. The Verizon Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge price tags come with a $50 mail-in rebate debit card. In other words, you pay $250 for the 32GB Verizon Galaxy S6 and Verizon will send you a $50 debit card to knock $50 off the price of the phone.

Verizon notes that the mail-in rebate debit card could take up to six weeks to arrive in the mail and that it does have a shelf life of 12 months. This is something you need to keep in mind if you’re the forgetful type.

Verizon Galaxy S6 Edge is Way More Expensive

Another reminder. The Verizon Galaxy S6 Edge is way more expensive than the Verizon Galaxy S6. That will be the case on Verizon and that will be the case wherever else the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge end up.

Galaxy-S6

At Verizon, the Galaxy S6 Edge is $100 more expensive than the regular model. That includes on-contract pricing and that also includes off-contract pricing. Verizon Edge pricing changes accordingly.

Verizon Galaxy S6 Deals

We haven’t spotted many early Verizon Galaxy S6 deals though there is one that you should be aware of ahead of the Verizon Galaxy S6 release.

Best Buy, the retailer that you should avoid if you’re going off-contract, is offering a free charging pad which is a $60 value. The Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge come with built-in wireless charging so this is definitely a deal worth looking at. There is one caveat though.

The deal only extends through April 11th, or, a day after the initial Galaxy S6 release date in the United States. So you’ll need to act pretty quickly if you’re interested in the deal.

As for other deals, we’d expect some retailers to offer deals as we push away from the initial Galaxy S6 release date. The deals will likely start off small before growing larger as we move into the fall.

Tons of Galaxy S6 Accessories

Verizon notes that it will have tons of Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge accessories on sale. Its accessories will include a mix of official Samsung accessories like the S View Flip Cover and third-party accessories like Speck’s CandyShell Grip case.

It’s worth noting that there will be a ton of other accessories on sale for the Verizon Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge from retailers like Amazon and companies like Mophie.

Galaxy S6 Release Date Tips

Finally, you should know that we’ve outlined some essential Samsung Galaxy S6 release date tips that we think you should absorb before Verizon’s Galaxy S6 release date.
