Wait for Galaxy Note Jelly Bean Update Continues

Published

on

All the way back in August, Samsung promised that three Jelly Bean updates, specifically, would be arriving soon. The first, the Samsung Galaxy S3 Jelly Bean update which became available shortly after the company’s August proclamation. The second, the Galaxy Note 10.1 which like the Galaxy S3, already has access to Jelly Bean. The third update, the Samsung Galaxy Note Jelly Bean update, which has seen several leaks but was just beaten to the punch by the Galaxy S2 Jelly Bean update, leaving it as the last big name Samsung smartphone without Jelly Bean.

When Samsung announced the Galaxy Note 2 back at IFA in August, the company boldly proclaimed that it would be rolling out three Jelly Bean updates in the not-so-distant future. Of course, at the time, many wondered whether Samsung was telling the truth, or if it was selling promises to consumers like many companies do when up on a massive stage selling their products. Remember, that’s really what these big launch events are all about.

Samsung though quickly followed through with a few of those promises not too long afterwards.

AT&T Galaxy Note owners likely won’t see the update roll out any time soon.

At the end of September, Samsung delivered the Samsung Galaxy S3 Jelly Bean update, much to the surprise of some owners who believed that “soon” likely meant a few months down the road. Turns out, it meant about a month. In the world of Android, that is indeed “soon.”

Since then, the Galaxy S3 has received another huge update in the form of the Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean update, called the “Premium Suite,” that delivers some fantastic features from Samsung including the Multi-Window View multitasking feature that is prominent on the Galaxy Note 2. Owners in the United States don’t have access to the update yet but we imagine they will soon.

At the end of November, Samsung rolled out the Galaxy Note 10.1 Jelly Bean update. Maybe a little longer of a wait than owners expected but nonetheless, the Galaxy Note 10.1 is now running Android 4.1 Jelly Bean as its operating system. In fact, just a few days ago, owners of the U.S. model finally got their update a little over four months after the original announcement.

So, Samsung is now two for three. It delivered on the Galaxy Note 10.1 update and it really outdid itself with the update to the Galaxy S3, which it really seemed to key on, likely due to its popularity.

One of the original promises still remains unfulfilled however and that void just got a little bigger as the company decided to roll out the Galaxy S2 Jelly Bean update before finishing what it promised.

The third device that was promised a Jelly Bean update soon was the original Samsung Galaxy Note, a device that arrived after the Galaxy S2, and hit AT&T in the beginning of 2012. And now that the Galaxy S2 Jelly Bean update has arrived, owners are wondering where their promised update might be.

Several times we believed that a roll out was imminent. We saw the update leak and we also heard rumors that it would be arriving in the fourth quarter of last year. Samsung itself confirmed the update with a “Premium Suite” back in December but it did not specify when the software would arrive.

And now with January ticking away, Galaxy Note owners, particularly owners of the AT&T Galaxy Note, are wondering whether the rumors about an update in January were credible.

Remember, carrier attached versions of devices, specifically those in the U.S., often get their updates last. And the fact that the update hasn’t arrived for anyone means that it could be awhile before the AT&T Galaxy Note gets its upgrade.

Right now, February is looking possible for a roll out, at least on carriers. But even then, it will mean that the update will have come nearly six months after Samsung said it would roll out “soon.”

Look for the carrier to choose its words more carefully next time around.

I cant wait for this update to the note, its been a while, and I’d love to get rid of that horrible laggy scrolling all over the place with project butter, I’m not too bothered about all of the other features, i just want a £500 telephone to be able to smoothly scroll, it cant be that difficult! Let’s just hope it arrives by the end of the month – bring on project butter!

When entering and exiting apps, scrolling in chrome, when deleting a picture and selecting another it lags, lags everywhere. The transitioning from apps and pages is laggy. I’d liken it to playing a computer game at 60 frames per second, when sometimes things get complicated and this drops to 50fps or even 30fps.for me it is very noticeable.

Samsung, you suck. Six months after when you said “soon”, and that’s assuming it happens in February of 2013? Really, I wish you had just said no update then surprised us if that surprise ever comes.
I’ve decided my patience has run out. First it was six month wait for IC, now at last six month for JB. I’m at one year after the purchase of an extremely terrible laggy phone. Coming from Apple, it’s frustrating as hell. I don’t want to return to Apple cause their screen is too small and OS too restrictive. I will sell my note and get another Android (non Samsung) phone or windows phone.

So, you didn’t need Note at first place.Right? May be you throw even the S Pen away ?

No I use the pen from time to time. I could always get a different phone with a pen.

Go for iphone. Than you you will be updated regularly, and in time, with the same old iOS , forever. LOL

That’s so false. I came from Iphone and they updated it on a regular basis, each time adding new exciting and functional features. Only problem I have with iphone is the size of the screen and lack of customization, otherwise, its smooth as silk and works like magic. They had “butter” on day one. Samsung keeps the butter to itself until we get frustrate so we buy a new phone. That aint happening samsung. No more android phones with you. I still like android, after project butter that is.

Samsung can’t do this. Later devices get updates earlier than the older ones. That’s the right one. But, what’s happening? S2 about 2 yrs old is getting it before. Then what about Note? Does it mean that we have to keep saying, “We are waiting” while all others get it and go far ahead? Samsung, you broke your promise to millions of customers who made Note 1 a success. Samsung, indeed forgot Note 1 users as they got a new one. Guess they are looking forward to releasing Note 3. So, right now no concentration upon software updates.

      01/25/2013 at 1:07 pm

you hit it right on the nose Ashwin. We are now “old” customers who do not bring in revenue to Samsung and we get treated as third class crew. What they fail to realize where apple does not, is that we hold the purses to future purses too. The phone market is nearly replaced every two years, and what goes around comes around.

We helped make the note a success when we said no to those nay-Sayers proclaiming it is impossibly big and ugly. We stuck with them, faithful and loyal. Without us, there would be no note2 or soon to be note3 to profit from, yet we are treated like old news. Shame Samsung, shame. Google did their part, and you let your pioneering customers, (who refused to listen to others) down.

      Goodbye Samsung

When Will Samsung Galaxy Note be updated?

  10. Waylon

    01/24/2013 at 9:27 am

In my opinion, Samsung is doing the wrong thing by not pushing the updates as soon as they can, even if this means hiring more programmers to make it happen.

We all watched the iphone jump to the top of the heap. Not only because it was new, but because people knew it was going to be supported by the next upgrade. The new IOS worked on at least 3 older versions of the phone, right away, just like it did on the ipods. Did anyone else see a drop in iphone sales now that Siri doesn’t work on the iphone 4, only the 4S and 5?

I have the first Galaxy Note It’s not even a year old and it’s far behind the Galaxy Note 2 as far as software is concerned. Other companies are making phones with large screens and fast processors. Everyone is jumping on the Phablet bandwagon. I, for one, am not going to upgrade my hardware within the first year of my contract. And if support doesn’t pick up, I will be looking elsewhere for my next Phablet in two years time either.

Where can I find a leaked unofficial jellybean rom for the AT&T Galaxy Note? If it is stable then I would be willing to give it a try.

    • Photo

      01/25/2013 at 1:11 pm

Let us know how that works “lakerstyle”, I’m ready to do the same as my one year warranty is approaching, in a few days time. If it works well, I’ll jump on the unofficial JB as well. After a year, we have nothing to lose, and we can always go back to the crummy ICS anyway.

So apparently telus in the us has a release schedule for jelly bean on the note 1 penned in for february. Where and when other networks will release it is something of a guess.

But right now, i think february is a good bet for rollout.

    Its horrible experience buying samsumg,
    1) They dont provide updates on time because they wants us to update our phone, and want to make additional revenue.
wherein iphone gives priority to all their old customers and releases their update on time.

    Please don’t buy samsung

Oh please… tell that to everyone that lost google maps with iOS 6. As long as Samsung keeps up the innovative devices like the Galaxy Note, I’m never going back to an iPhone. The real issue here is that different carriers add their bloatware to Samsung devices… the delay comes from them, not from Samsung.

I think it’s much more sophisticated than just “failing” or “bugs” or “logistical” issues. I think they have run the numbers and when enough people give up on an update – and buy new phones, THEN they update the old versions. It’s all about making you WANT an update and feeling “left behind”. The OS has become an “I want that now” buying trigger similar to new hardware releases.

It appears that that JB is not available in USA – I went to Kies to transfer some files and was told “an update was available”. I let it do it, and now the Note I is at 4.0.4

      02/10/2013 at 7:36 pm

Make that “now” available (not “not” available)!

4.0.4 is ICS, not JB, so leave that ‘not’ available.

Its commercial thinking they want you to buy the note 2 it is as simple as that the old note is not produced anymore so why bother its not consumer friendly but hey thats not important its money that rules the world not our wishes . So you can wait or go to custom roms . I did that in the past but it was so time consuming because there was always something wrong with those roms . Now my note works perfectly on ICS so its fine for me if jelly bean comes I will update if not well so be it . The Note 2 does not appeal the me at the moment because the chances are to small to justifiy the money Iam looking now at the asus padfone 2 that one looks promising . The Iphone (ha ha) wel that one is old they chance the cover every year strech the screen a bit but the OS is allready for 5 year the same its to basic and to simpel for me and I dont like the lockup system Apple uses and lets not start about Itunes yak . But if you want a phone that works with no frills then the Iphone is for you.

I am waiting for the new iphone. If I like it I am going back to Apple and goodbye to Samsung until they get their act together on updates. If Samsung continues this arrogant manner of theirs they will end up as Blackberry did, down the drain.

Next IPhone is suppose to have a 4.5 inch screen. Meanwhile, I’m still waiting for Jellybean. By the looks of it, Apple will have the iPhone 6 out before my Note gets its update.
I like the Note, but I’m not really keen on being treated like an unimportant market. I will be keeping my options open on my next phone
