Wait for the iPhone 6?

Published

on

“Should I wait for the iPhone 6?” That’s a question we hear every day from readers and friends, and the answer varies based on each situation.

For most users it makes sense to wait for the iPhone 6 release date, especially if you plan to buy a new iPhone and use it for two or three years before you upgrade. In 2014 there are more reasons than normal to wait for the iPhone 6, but not every is willing to wait for Apple.

The short answer is, if you can wait for the iPhone 6, you should, but here are three reasons you should jump in and buy the iPhone 5s now, instead of waiting for a few months.

You’ll notice we said you can buy the iPhone 5s instead of waiting for the iPhone 6, not buy any iPhone.

It makes no sense to buy the iPhone 4s this late in 2014. Even at a penny or free on contract the iPhone 4s is a bad buy. Same goes for the iPhone 5c, which is basically a plastic iPhone 5. Although both of these phones will get an update to iOS 8 this fall, expect many features to be left out. Also the overall performance and camera quality aren’t at the same level as the iPhone 5s.

You Literally Cannot Wait for the iPhone 6

For many shoppers a lack of willpower is the only reason they cannot wait for the iPhone 6, but for others there is no way to wait for the iPhone 6 release date.

Broken Phone

If your current smartphone is broken and you cannot get a warranty replacement it’s next to impossible to go three months without a smartphone. If you can use an old phone form a friend to get through, it’s a good idea, but that’s not always possible. If that fails you should buy the iPhone 5s, or look at these smartphones to consider before buying the iPhone 5s if you are thinking of buying an Android phone.

Don't wait for the iPhone 6 if your iPhone is broken.

Alltel Customer

If you are an Alltel customer AT&T is in the process of transitioning users over to the new AT&T network on a market by market basis and you will need a new smartphone when the transition occurs. For many users this means they are forced to buy a new AT&T smartphone well ahead of an iPhone 6 release. This is unfortunate, but necessary. If you buy on a AT&T Next, you can upgrade in as little as a year, but you may end up paying more for the phone.

You Don’t Want a Bigger iPhone 6

If you don’t want a bigger screen on the iPhone 6, you should just give up and buy an iPhone 5s today. This means no new design and you will likely miss out on some iOS 8 features that only work on the new iPhone, but overall you may be happier.

The 4.7-inch iPhone 6 may not be much bigger, but if you don't want a bigger display, buy the iPhone 5s.

Rumors point to an iPhone 6 with a 4.7-inch display and an iPhone 6 with a 5.5-inch display as the only options. As much as we think there is a need for an iPhone 6 with a 4-inch display, it does not look like Apple plans to offer this — unless it is a very well-kept secret. As we explain, Apple may be prepared to offer more features to the iPhone 5s using cloud services in iOS 8, which is enough for some buyers to forget about the iPhone 6.

Before you make this decision, be sure to check out how much bigger a 4.7-inch iPhone 6 may be. Although the bezels make the iPhone 6 fairly tall, mock ups show that it shouldn’t be too much bigger than the iPhone 5s.

You Just Want a Cheap iPhone 5s

One of the main reasons we tell people who don’t need the latest and greatest iPhone to wait for the iPhone 6 is to get a cheaper iPhone 5s. Apple normally cuts the price of the old iPhone by $100 and  continues to sell it. This is a good deal, and in past years it was the start of bigger iPhone deals.

If you are only waiting for the iPhone 6 to get an iPhone 5s deal, there is no need to wait.

If you are only waiting for the iPhone 6 to get an iPhone 5s deal, there is no need to wait.

Right now there are always an iPhone 5s deals to be found at retailers like Best Buy, Radio Shack and Target. We even see deals at carriers from time to time. You can buy the iPhone 5s for $99 on Verizon or Sprint from Best Buy and if you trade in an old smartphone you may end up paying almost nothing. Target offers $50 off any iPhone 5s on AT&T, Sprint or Verizon as well.  If you want to go straight from AT&T you can get a refurbished iPhone 5s for $99 on a two-year contract.

In short there are a lot of deals that drop the iPhone 5s price down to where we expect it will be after apple announces the iPhone 6 this fall.

Here is a quick look at what the iPhone 6 may offer users that do wait for the new iPhone this fall.

  • iPhone 6 Screen Size – 4.7-inch iPhone and a 5.5-inch iPhone with 1704 x 960 resolution.

I opted for the 5S. Long term users know that the iPhone to get always has an”S” in the model. With 64 GB plus 32 GB in the Mophie case, this phone will never run out of memory. For the same reason, battery life will never be a problem.
I got a very good deal on the iPhone at a corporate Verizon store, and I’m keeping the 4S for back up. Although out of date, the 4S is still a darn good phone.
I didn’t want an iPhone larger than the 5S. I think I’ll skip on the 6.
Maybe when the 6S comes out…

Nonsense. The iphone 5 is still a great phone and much more future proof than the 4s.
But I agree on the screen size, don’t want a bigger phone.

My contract’s just about up and I’m going to make sure I get a 5s before the 6 comes out. The 5s is as big a phone as I ever want to go. I’d rather have them keep the same screen size and shrink the overall phone area by a little. Not sure who’s driving this trend towards stupidly big phones but I have an old iPod touch with a 3.5″ display and I’ve never had any issue with any apps on even that size screen. The only additional features I’d want are related to fitness apps but there hasn’t been anything sized correctly for that application since they changed the Nano and made it big for some reason. A 6 is going to be way too huge to be reasonable for that use so I’d never use it for that and would go with an iWatch for that purpose instead.

I just bought a great Ariel Atom from having earned $9356 this month and would you believe, $10k this past-month. This is really the most-comfortable work I have ever had. I began this 6 months ago and right away was bringing in more than $83 per/h. This is what I do… PayCog.c*om

If you buy an iPhone 5s then you will get EVERY feature of iOS 8. There’s no feature that will be left out on the 5s. I don’t understand why this article says “if you buy an iPhone now then you Will miss features of iOS 8, but it’s not true…. The iPhone 5s Will most certainly have every feature of iOS 8.

I’ll stick with my 5s untill the 6s gets released , normally the iPhones with S seem to be more future-proof , such as the iPhone 4s which is still useable in 2014 and it will receive the new ios8 update compared to the iPhone 4…
