NFL Mobile 12: Watch Live NFL Games and RedZone on the iPhone

Published

on

It’s football season and as the NFL gets underway for 2012, it’s time to take a look at how to watch live NFL games on the iPhone with the NFL Mobile 12 app.

iPhone users on Verizon can watch every Sunday Night, Monday Night and Thursday Night NFL game on the iPhone on 3G and WiFi for $5 a month.

This package doesn’t include every Sunday game, but it does include NFL RedZone so you can watch every touchdown, punt return and field goal during the season — all included in the $5 a month price. The video below shows some of the NFL Mobile 12 features.

Unlike many of the solutions to watch NFL football games on the iPhone, Verizon subscribers don’t need a separate subscription to Direct TV to watch. Android owners can watch live NFL games with the same app on the Verizon network.

Watch Live NFL iPhone - 5

Live NFL games on the iPhone.

I spent the day watching my Miami Dolphins take a beating by the Houston Texans on the Red Zone Channel. I can’t watch my team play every sunday, but I can see the scoring plays as they happen. For me this is a much better solution than the NFL Game Rewind, but it’s a far cry from the NFL Preseason Live app that offered every NFL Game live with AirPlay support for my iPad.

The NFL Mobile 12 app is a free app, but it only works on Verizon powered devices. This means I can watch on my Verizon iPhone, but I can’t watch on my iPad because it isn’t  a 3G iPad on Verizon. The app does not work on the new iPad. I’m looking forward to this service more on the iPhone 5 which should launch with 4G LTE. This will mean faster speeds for better looking streaming video, though it will eat through my shared data plan faster.

Video quality degrades on 3G.

The streaming video looks good, with clear sharp-looking streams all afternoon while it jumped between teams scoring across the NFL. When I jumped to 3G, the video took two minutes to start. Video quality over 3G is poor, bordering on unwatchable.

I plan to use the app mostly to watch the NFL RedZone channel while I am on WiFi while watching a local game on my HDTV or while at a friend’s house. I wouldn’t want to use my iPhone to watch a full Sunday night game unless I’m connected to WiFi or on the rumored iPhone 5 with 4G LTE.

Listen to live game audio from any game.

The app does include live audio from almost every NFL game, so I can listen in to my favorite team’s games. If I am mobile I’ll gladly take a good audio stream over a choppy 3G stream of the RedZone channel.

NFL Network game summary is also available.

The app includes the NFL Network channel with a summary of all current scores, and commentary during part of the time I watched this afternoon.

There is no AirPlay support, so I cannot stream the game to my HDTV with an Apple TV. This is a disappointment as It would be nice to put the RedZone channel on the big screen.

For the $5 per month cost, NFL Mobile 12 is a worthwhile app investment for any Verizon iPhone owner that loves football. AT&T and Sprint users can download the app, but are note able to subscribe to the service needed to watch Live NFL games and the RedZone channel. The streaming is subject to blackouts, so not every NFL night game can be streamed, so keep that in mind before signing up.

Verizon iPhone owners can download the NFL Mobile app free from the app store and subscribe for $5 per month right from the app.

I spoke with verizon and they claimed this app would only work with iphones purchased directly through them….rather than going through apple….does that sound accurate? We want an iphone but prefer to get it direct through apple….

Can I watch the NFL app on my TV by connecting my Drod X with a HDMI cable to the TV?

Why do I got to pay for Redzone when I already pay for it through the cable company?

Just found out this app does work with Apple TV, kind of. Basically you need to turn on mirroring (double click Home button and swipe left until you see the icon).

Thanks for the great review about this app. I’m not a Verizon subscriber, but I was curious about what you get with the NFL Mobile app. I love football, and hate missing my games, so I have been using my DISH Remote Access app to keep tabs of things on Sunday. I can watch live and recorded programs from my DVR when I am away from home. I went over last week’s Broncos game against the Raiders on my commute to DISH and thought it was one of the best wins in franchise history. I can’t believe the season is already at week five!

LBS is “Location-Based Services”. You need to go into Settings on the iPhone and turn on “Location Services” for the app.

AT&T will not have red zone too many subscribers have been grandfathered in for unlimited data

Can I get live games on my iPhone 5 even though I’m an AT&T subscriber but I have Verizon Fios as my cable subscriber?
