Why You Should Buy the 64GB Apple TV

Published

on

The new Apple TV is now available to purchase online, and if you’re thinking about buying the new set-top box, here’s why you should buy the 64GB Apple TV model.

The new Apple TV is a big overhaul over the previous generation, coming with an all-new remote, Siri functionality, gaming support, and its very own App Store for third-party apps and games. You can buy the set-top box right now on Apple’s website, as the company just launched online orders this morning.

The new Apple TV starts at $149 and comes in two different storage sizes. You can get a 32GB model for the entry-level $149 price, or spring for the 64GB version for $199.

A $50 difference for 32GB of more storage might seem like a lot, and it’s likely that many buyers will just get the cheaper 32GB model, but you’ll likely want the larger storage capacity with the Apple TV.

Usually, I go with the smaller storage capacities with other Apple products, but considering that you’ll likely have your Apple TV for several years (since Apple doesn’t update them as much), having more storage to play around with is great for future-proofing.

Why You Should Buy the 64GB Apple TV

Perhaps the biggest new feature of the new Apple TV is the dedicated App Store, which allows you to download and install third-party apps and games from various developers.

Previously, the Apple TV only allowed a handful of various streaming and broadcasting apps (which Apple called “channels”), so there was really no way for users to take advantage of the storage on the device. However, this time around, users can install as many apps and games as they want.

This is why I think getting the 64GB Apple TV model is the right move in the long run. Sure, Apple has said that all apps and games will be capped at 200MB a piece in the App Store, which means you could technically fit around 300 apps if they were all 200MB in size, but it’s possible that the 200MB limit may be lifted by Apple eventually in the future.

Plus, that file size limit is only for the initial download from the App Store, meaning that some games could technically use up way more storage than that. For example, the core files may not exceed 200MB, but after you download and install the app, there could be another download to finish installing the game fully. And even future updates could surpass that 200MB limit.

Plus, on top of apps are any other media that you could store on the Apple TV, like movies, TV shows, music, etc. Of course, you’ll be able to use iCloud on the new Apple TV, but if you want to store anything locally, it’ll use up that 32GB or 64GB storage on the set-top box.

Of course, one big reason why users probably won’t buy the 64GB Apple TV is because of price. You have to pay $50 to get 32GB more of storage and that’s not something most users will probably do.

Look at it this way though: You’re paying $150 to get through the door anyway; what’s paying an extra $50 to get the top-of-the-line model? It’s like paying a $15 cover charge at a nightclub, but not paying for the $5 drink — it doesn’t make a lot of sense.

Another way of looking at it is that you’re only paying 25% more to get double the storage.

Plus, the new Apple TV will probably be around for several years, which means you won’t update as much as you do with the iPhone or iPad. I can easily get away with a 16GB iPhone since I usually update iPhones and start over more frequently anyway, but with the Apple TV, you’ll keep it for much longer and have all of these apps and games built up over time, which can easily max out that 32GB storage capacity in no time.

I won’t be playing any games, I only want the new AppleTV for the Siri searching and the new remote, so I think the 32GB model will be plenty. But yeah, if anyone thinks they’ll be playing games on it, they need to invest in the 64GB.

Eh, nobody is going to install and keep every single aTV-compatible game unless you’re aiming for some sort of achievement – I don’t understand why Apple put out a 64 GB version, but I’m VERY happy the base model has 32 instead of the typical meager 16 GB they put in the iPhones and iPads.

A difficult decision because people don’t know how much space they will need on a completely new device category. I thought of just getting the 64GB since it’s ONLY $50 more, but that’s 1/3 the price of the 32GB. Keeping in mind that this is a first gen, so I’d rather save the $50 and put it toward the next gen model.

I do plan to play game on the new Apple TV, but 32GB is plenty. You can always delete old games to make space. And since it’s on your home network, you can always download what you want.

I would buy the 64 GB because it’s always better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it!
$50 is nothing in the grand scheme of things!
