Why You Shouldn’t Buy the 128GB iPad Air 2

Published

on

The iPad Air 2 is now on sale, equipped with Apple’s Touch ID fingerprint sensor, as well as a new gold color option. However, if you’re still pondering over which storage size to buy, might we suggest to stay away from the 128GB version.

The iPad Air 2 comes in 16GB, 64GB and 128GB storage flavors, giving you a few options to choose from when it comes to deciding how much storage you’ll need, but on thing we can tell you right now is that 128GB will probably be overkill for you and most other users.

I know what you’re thinking: “I might need that much storage eventually, so isn’t it best to be safe and get the 128GB option?”

It never hurts to have more storage than you need, but when you’d have to pay $100 more in order to get the 128GB storage flavor, it’s money that you most likely will never end up using at its full potential. Here’s why you should stay away from the 128GB iPad Air 2 and stick with the 64GB model.

Listen to Your Brain, Not Your Gut

When it comes to figuring out how much storage you might need out of your iPad, it’s best to listen to your brain and not your gut.

If your gut is telling you to get the 128GB version, don’t listen to it. Your gut doesn’t know what’s best. In fact, in this case, your guy is merely just guesstimating, and it’s probably wrong.

iPad Air 2 vs iPad mini 3

We’ve all been there at some point where we go ahead and bite the bullet and buy a higher-capacity iPad with the thought that we’ll probably fill it up eventually with all sorts apps, games, and other files, but come to find out that it never cracks the 50%-full mark.

Of course, if you’ve had experiences in the recent past with old tablets where 64GB just wasn’t enough for all of your apps, music, movies, TV shows, etc., then yes, going for a 128GB model may be a good idea, but that applies to a very low percentage of users, and most iPad users won’t use that much storage.

64GB iPad Air 2 Is the Perfect Model

When it comes to buying an iPad Air 2, the 64GB model is really the perfect one, since 16GB is way too little, and 128GB is most likely overkill. The 64GB version as the perfect Goldilocks option for most users. That model is priced at $599 for the WiFi-only version, while the WiFi + cellular model costs $729.

iPad-Air-2-side

Of course, if you know that you’re a very casual user that doesn’t take advantage of a lot of apps and games, then 16GB might be enough, but if you’re anything more than a casual user, the 64GB is really the only way to go.

Plus, the 64GB iPad Air 2 is a steal now, considering that the same cost would only get you a 32GB iPad last year. However, you could also opt for the 32GB iPad Air if you think you’ll need the in-between of 16GB and 64GB. It’s the older iPad model, but it still works great, and is only $449 for the 32GB model, while the 16GB version is only $399.

The 128GB iPad Air 2 shouldn’t be completely dismissed, but it’s mostly reserved for those rare users who really need the space. Music lovers who have over 50GB of music would most likely benefit from a 128GB iPad, and photographers would probably want a 128GB iPad as well, seeing as they’ll take a lot of pictures and store them on their devices as a mobile photo portfolio of sorts, which the iPad is very good at.

this is probably one of the worst reviews I have read. this is basing a purchase (a $600-$800 purchase) on opinion with nothing to back it up. wow. not impressed.

Agreed! If you keep it more than 2 years, you’ll be wishing you had gotten the 128GB model.

Thats complete B.S, we both know keeping almost any Apple item for More than a year makes it crap, i honestly dont think you’re going to use a slowass tablet if you’re paying so much since you make it clear you have alot of money.

on top of that, the premium per gig is greater going from 16 gb to 64 than from 64 to 128

I have allot of music on my iPod, and the highest quality videos (more than 50 of those), and my 30gb iPod isn’t cutting it. I’ve had to take off several playlists and videos just to get this thing to accept new material. And I know that they make a bigger iPod around 60 something gb but I couldn’t bring myself to buy it at the time. BIG MISTAKE.
From now on I’m buying the biggest memory capacity available. Until you know the crappy feeling of having to delete old stuff just to put new stuff on you want just as much you will never understand why higher memory is such a great thing.

    Nah…. just get the 128GB. You’re spending $600 already, so what’s another $100?

In must agree with thema previousprevious comments. Te Apple keeps supplying updates, so we intend tot keep for aan long time. And when you are planing to make photo-albums I can imagine that even 128 Gb might run out given time haha. ..

are you stupid or something? this is a fail review…. double the memory for £100 is a bargain, you should be selling it not telling people its not essential, i have used ipads for 3 years now and im telling everyone that intends on getting one to get the biggest storage available or regret it at a later date when you’re trying to decide whats more important to keep on your device due to lack of space… games and apps are getting bigger, better and more complex so prepare for the future as its only round the corner

How lazy can you get? This is literally the same article as the one against buying a 128GB iPhone 6, just with the relevant terms find-and-replaced.

This is why you should not drink and write reviews. You are bound to just swerve off the path of any common sense. Between games that can take up 1 to 2 GBs, and HD videos 3 GBs per hour, it is not hard to blast past 64 GB that is suggested here in this review.

The 128 GB Air 2 is running about $630 for Wifi only right now and 64 GB about $545. $85 for another 64GB is cheap in an Apple product.

I think he is probably speaking for the majority of users. Many users will do just fine with 16. Most will never need more than 32. A few will need 64, and very few will really need 128. I think the commenters on here are mostly those who do need more storage. 2 or 3 years and users are going to get the itch for the latest and greatest and a vast majority will not even have 64 g filled up.. power users, yes. Casual users, no. Just my opinion.

I have the128gb iPad Air 2 and I got it for 525$ in staples from the recent Black Friday sale! I am typing this on my iPad now. Get the 128gb, you won’t regret it. If you play a lot of games and click many photos, shoot videos and download 30gb of music(I think I am exaggerating), then get the 128gb.

I’m sorry but you are buying the iPad in the worst time possible. You should have bought it on Black Friday. I got it for $525 and it was a great deal. You can check bestbuy as they have a Flash Sale going on and you can also wait for March14 as that day the new iPhone and iPad will be released(not confirmed, check various sources for confirmation). Your last resort is to either wait for Black Friday or go to eBay and buy one. eBay is always risky, but check the seller ratings. You can also check out Back To School sales as Apple on that sale sell iPads with extended warranty or free Beats headphones. That sale will be on August-September.

64 and 128 appeal to similar demographics. The 64GB crowd gambles by cutting cost at the expense of their media usage. What this means in the long run is more tedious iTunes management for the 64GB user vs peace of mind for the 128GB user. It doesn’t matter if the 128 user has 1gb or 50gb of free space. The net effect is less hassle.

Another point is that 128GB devices have better trade value so when the time comes to upgrade your device, the higher cost you paid for more storage can be offset. I do understand that you were just trying to save people money at the time so no hard feelings. I can almost understand the logic if you were coming at it from an iPhone perspective. The screen size is not optimal for mass media/video consumption. iPads are a different beast though. It’s not unusual to see people with iPad 2’s all these years later.
